Message 70173 - Posted: 20 Nov 2020, 1:26:58 UTC

Its time to retire the old 970 sli setup for something newer. The 970's will be split up and put into other machines that will still continue to do work for the cause...so don't worry about loosing them.
I am torn between the 6800/6800xt and the 3070/3080. Is there any benefit with Cuda over open CL or vise versa? Any of the gpus will be more than enough for the gaming I do so I would like to know if either architecture is better than the other of milkyway. I also do seti, but that project is on break for now.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thank you,

-Sam

Look up top under Computing and click on gpu models and look under your OS as to which is better, the sinple answer is the Nvidia models are much better than the AMD models. The complicated answer is the FP32/FP64 ratio matters and as you can see by this chart http://www.geeks3d.com/20140305/amd-radeon-and-nvidia-geforce-fp32-fp64-gflops-table-computing/ AMD has consistently reduced the ratio over the years since about the 5870 series. No the latest gpu's aren't on there but their ratios are even worse!

Thanks for the reply.

It looks like the latest and greatest from team red has a better ratio than team green. RDNA2 is 1/16, rtx3000 is around 1/64,

Here is a link that has the fp32/64 numbers.

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-6800-xt.c3694

So I guess I will get and RDNA2 card this time around.

That is better!! The one thing that scares me about the card is the length of it, ie it could require a bigger case, and the need for a bigger power supply than most people already use. I am not picky about which brand I buy, for me price is a huge consideration, ie can I get 2 of that one instead of 1 of that kind and do more. I have 3 1080Ti's as my best gpu's right no so I too am looking to upgrade but am not willing to pay the $650US for any gpu right now. I did that when I bought the 1080's and now I'm looking at a smaller upgrade to the 2080 ones or maybe even a 3060 when they drop in price. If AMD comes out with a 6700 series I will look at them too.

Never use Nvidia here. The AMD cards are best. It is in part due to their better (or more compatible) OpenCl, and also the dual-precision performance.

The last time I checked, you were still being limited by the timeouts after downloading a group of work units. Buying an expensive card just meant you got a more expensive wait time. Maybe that has been fixed. Otherwise, I don't think you will do much better than an RX 570, certainly not for the cost.

But I am waiting for the nBody work to be put on GPUs before jumping in again, if it ever happens. Good luck.

By the way, I tried a GTX 970 too, and quickly gave up on it.
I am running a few on my RX 570 under Ubuntu 20.04.1, just to check out the drivers, which are not as easy to install as Nvidia.

The new cnda cards are supposed to super fast with fp32/64....but I am not willing to spend that much on a GPU.. plus it may not be that great a games.

Does anyone know if seti uses FP64 as well...for when ever that project comes back around?

Since the satellite dish in Arecibo is going to be dismantled Seti will have to find a new source for their data so it could be a bit before they come back.

Don't they still have the dish arrays out West? They used to have the Allen array and there was another that I can't think of name right now. Arecibo was just one source of data from what I understood.

Most of the Seti data in the last two years was not from Arecibo. It was from the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia.

So no worries about future data sources even with Arecibo dismantled.

One thing I heard the other day was that Arecibo was into finding 'near Earth objects' ie things going to hit or just miss us and that in things like that size matters so they will miss that part of Arecibo.

They are now using the ATLAS system to detect the potential impacts.

If you want something to crunch, the Asteroids project is using the ATLAS data to determine various characteristics of asteroids.

Yes, that was one of the other things that made Arecibo unique, its use as a high sensitivity 3D radar transmitter. It was used to paint near-Earth-orbit asteroids to determine if they will hit Earth and determine their shape and mass.

I did not know about Atlas, I wish it was a Boinc Project though.

Yes I knew Asteroids was but I was hoping Atlas would be as well.

What ATLAS does not require any distributed computing horsepower. So no reason to use BOINC. There primary mission is NEO asteroid discovery. That simply involves taking images every night and looking for a moving dot in the exposure. Once you find one, you keep imaging over several nights or months to figure out its trajectory and whether it might pose a hazard to Earth.

None of that involves parallel calculations or massive amount of calculations that would be needed to be broken down into smaller chunks. So no BOINC project.

Booooo!!! They need to take more images so our pc's can analyze them for the movment they are looking for, a few hundred thousand images per night should work as a start.

6800/6800XT board partners release their GPU's tomorrow. Fingers crossed that I will get one.
I missed out on the reference card release because I had to take my daughter to school; she doesn't have school tomorrow.

If you are going strictly by the numbers to get one you might want to read this first:

https://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/forum_thread.php?id=202

turns out all is not well with the numbers gpu makers are giving us, or their definitions are 'evolving'.
