Message 70344 - Posted: 13 Jan 2021, 17:38:06 UTC

It seems that I have some sort of graphics processor problem. The reason that I say this is because every time that I enable the GPU to work on MW, I get a Blue Screen. Not immediately, but after several hours of work.

I have changed the drivers to the newest and have also tried older versions with no success. At present, I have tried to disable the GPU use on just this machine by imposing a stop in the Computing Preferences in BOINC, setting the Suspend GPU computing when computer is in use setting it to 9999. This gives me about 7 days of non attended stopping of the GPU.

I would like a better way of just stopping it on this machine, but not on the others.
OTOH, it would even be better if someone had a suggestion that would allow me to use this GPU,

Thanks, Allen

I would just turn off the gpu in cc_config.xml for that machine.

Should it be as you stated or should it be <no_gpus>0</no_gpus>.

Thanks

Should be 1 1 = True
True for <no_gpus> case.
Default is <no_gpus>0</no_gpus> or allow gpus
You want the opposite.

Keith,

Thanks, makes a lot of sense. Thanks for taking the time to explain too.

Keith,

I am still getting GPU work downloaded, is that right?

It does say that it is suspended, but keeps d/ling anyway.

You can also create a separate "location" in Milkyway@home preferences under your account. For that separate location (work, school, doesn't matter) you would assign the problem machine to that location. You can specify only CPU tasks and not have it affect the rest of your computers.

Thank you. I had forgotten about that option. I will try it soon.

Feeling very stupid right now. I went into the Milkyway preferences and changed the settings under Home and saved. Nothing happened. It still says it's using the default. How do I get it to use the Home settings?

Also, I have assigned a pic for my account, but it doesn't show up. It's a .jpg, should it be something else? It's only 9k.

Make sure you update the project for it to pick up the new location.

Also, this is the image limit.
Format: JPG or PNG. Size: at most 4 KB, 100x100 pixels

Reduce the image size down to 4KB and 100X100 pixels. 9KB is still too big.

Did you remember to move the pc to the Home location?

On your account main page, click on "computers on this account". When the list of computers comes up, click on the details link on the left side, under the computer ID. At the bottom of the details page is a location drop-down menu. Select your choice then click update location.

Wow, guess after all these years you can still teach an old man new tricks. Either I forgot all about that feature or I never used it. Been using Boinc since it started.
Thanks a million. Now if I can get my pic working, all will be well. I down sized it to under 2k, so hopefully it will be working soon.

Thanks again!

Hello, I'm back again.

I downsized my .jpg to under 1K and installed it to the profile. It recognized it and I did the Capcha and loaded it. It showed that it was installed and then I left the page. When I returned, it said there was no image installed. Any ideas what happened?
Thanks!

Oh, I also made it under 100 pixels.

Make sure you don't have any adblocker running. That will prevent links to outside sources.

I'm using Firefox and only have no script running, but have it set to accept everything at this site.
Does the image have to be exactly 100x100 pixels? Can it be less? I used the same one at Seti and had no trouble with it.

Thanks

I don't remember. I think I edited my avatar down to 100 X 100 pixels. Had no issues. OTOH the same image will not load correctly with the correct color space at all on other projects. Every project's requirements seem to be different.

I guess I'm just out of luck. I've got the file size under 4K, even though they specify under 55K and the pic is 55 x 100 and still doesn't show. It does however, show in the profile settings.

Thanks for trying to help!
