... to shut down BOINC when I do any kind of NVIDIA updates / upgrades and reboot before starting BOINC again. Greetings, Running Linux Mint v20.1, the other day I had file updates for NVIDIA v350 and a complete upgrade to v360. I selected the v350 file update and all was well, except... The update monitor did not tell me a reboot was needed. I went into BOINC and all of my GPU tasks were erring out. I quickly shut down BOINC and rebooted. All is well and good now, but I have over 350 GPU tasks with errors. My apologies to all those wing persons waiting on those tasks, that is if credit is given the same was as SETI@Home was done. Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. True for any video driver that includes either the CUDA or OpenCL components. Can't rip the compute component out from under running tasks without erroring them all out in short fashion. You also have to watch out for unattended-upgrades that include the Nvidia drivers with security mitigations in the release. They get classified as mandatory security updates and will install themselves without any interaction from you. Same result, all your tasks error out quickly for any running tasks and any others attempted before the newly compiled kernel is loaded. |

Hi Keith, Long time no see! :) I can expect the above with Linux? I figured that Micro$oft would do such a thing. I've not seen any kind of update / upgrade other than what I get through the Update Manager. Speaking of which, I have 5 new updates, one which is the v460 upgrade for NVIDIA. I'll do the other 4. ;) I'm impressed with MilkyWay. In just 16 days I have hit 2mil credit, and my RAC is over 95K. That's about 10 to 15 times better than SETI. And just on one PC and a laptop. No other PC and no Raspberry Pis this time. :) Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. You might be able to avoid the unattended-upgrades IF you haven't installed the Ubuntu Livepatch service which is usually forced on you during installation. This service automatically patches the kernel for critical security updates. It's just that the Nvidia drivers in the 450 and 460 releases included fixes for critical CVE bugs. https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5075 https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/nvidia-fixes-high-severity-flaws-affecting-windows-linux-devices/ https://lwn.net/Articles/842379/ So a Nvidia driver update is added to the unattended-upgrades list. That caught me out on the 450 series drivers which yanked the driver out from under MW tasks and I errored out all 300 tasks in my cache. |

Hi Keith, I cannot run on NVIDIA v460 driver(s). It comes up in low resolution even though the utility for changing it say it is 1024 x 768. It also says the system is running in "Laptop Mode" or something like that. This is definitely NOT a laptop. I have reverted back to v450. I tried to find out if that service listed above is running. I used this: systemctl --type=service --state=running This is what it shows: UNIT LOAD ACTIVE SUB DESCRIPTION accounts-daemon.service loaded active running Accounts Service acpid.service loaded active running ACPI event daemon avahi-daemon.service loaded active running Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Stack bluetooth.service loaded active running Bluetooth service colord.service loaded active running Manage, Install and Generate Color Profiles cron.service loaded active running Regular background program processing daemon cups-browsed.service loaded active running Make remote CUPS printers available locally cups.service loaded active running CUPS Scheduler dbus.service loaded active running D-Bus System Message Bus getty@tty1.service loaded active running Getty on tty1 irqbalance.service loaded active running irqbalance daemon kerneloops.service loaded active running Tool to automatically collect and submit kernel crash signatures lightdm.service loaded active running Light Display Manager ModemManager.service loaded active running Modem Manager networkd-dispatcher.service loaded active running Dispatcher daemon for systemd-networkd NetworkManager.service loaded active running Network Manager nvidia-persistenced.service loaded active running NVIDIA Persistence Daemon polkit.service loaded active running Authorization Manager rsyslog.service loaded active running System Logging Service rtkit-daemon.service loaded active running RealtimeKit Scheduling Policy Service systemd-journald.service loaded active running Journal Service systemd-logind.service loaded active running Login Service systemd-resolved.service loaded active running Network Name Resolution systemd-timesyncd.service loaded active running Network Time Synchronization systemd-udevd.service loaded active running udev Kernel Device Manager thermald.service loaded active running Thermal Daemon Service udisks2.service loaded active running Disk Manager upower.service loaded active running Daemon for power management user@1000.service loaded active running User Manager for UID 1000 vnstat.service loaded active running vnStat network traffic monitor wpa_supplicant.service loaded active running WPA supplicant LOAD = Reflects whether the unit definition was properly loaded. No, you misinterpreted my comment about the kernel. I was stating that the kernel gets rebuilt every time you updated the video drivers. All I'm saying is that the 50unattended-upgrades script in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d pulls in security updates which can include critical video drivers and that is the gotcha that spoils your best build plans of only doing manual updates. |

Hi Keith, My mistake. I looked in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d. I do not see the file "50unattended-upgrades. I do have "Show hidden files" turned on. I assume I didn't unintentionally install that script, correct? Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Don't know. I have the file. Do you have Ubuntu Livepatch service running? Maybe that is what installs the 50unattended-upgrades script. Definitely was the culprit in my case. |

Hi Keith, I don't see any indication that Ubuntu Livepatch is running using: "systemctl list-units --type=service --state=running". The name does not show up on the list. Remember, I don't run straight Ubuntu Linux, I run Linux Mint which is based on Ubuntu. Maybe the Devs decided not to aggravate Mint users? lol ;) Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Greetings, I just put a stop to getting the "Simulation" tasks that run on ALL CPU cores. I have 2 questions about them: 1.) Why is it that if the tasks says it will run in say 1 - 10 minutes, they end up taking 2 to 3 or more hours to run? 2.) Why do those tasks pause my other CPU tasks and use ALL cores to run one task? An inquiring mind would like to know. I'm going to stop and restart BOINC to see what that will do, if anything and just in case someone says to "stop and restart BOINC" to clear something out. Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. If you look on the applications page you will see that the cpu simulation tasks are MT or multi-thread. https://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/apps.php They are designed to run that way on all available cpu threads in the host. The time estimate is how long one thread would run. The run_time would be the single thread estimated times 8 threads or cpu cores. However it is very easy to make them run however you want with a simple app_config.xml file entry as detailed in the Client_Configuration Document. https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration#Application_configuration If you scroll down the page to Project-level configuration entry, the document gives you an example of the MT application configuration controls. All you need to do is decide how many cpu threads you want each MT task to run with the <nthreads> entry. Then decide how many cpu MT tasks you want to run at any time with the <max_concurrent> entry. So for this app_config.xml example, it would only run 1 task at a time using two cpu cores. <app_config> |

If you look on the applications page you will see that the cpu simulation tasks are MT or multi-thread. Hi Keith, Learn something new everyday. I had no idea about multi-thread tasks. Thanks for the explanation! :) I run BOINC on 9 of my 12 cores. If I were to do the app_config.xml mod and have the MT tasks run on 4 cores, will my other CPU tasks run on the remaining 5? I'll probably answer that myself when I make the mod. lol ;) Thanks again and have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? Well since I have never run N-body tasks before, it was a guess as to the appname. Check your client_state file for the actual project appname. If you were to change my example app_config to use 4 for the n_threads value, and keep the max_concurrent at 1 task, then yes you would use up 4 of your 9 threads for the N-body task and leave the other 5 threads for single cpu tasks from other projects for example. Or change the max_concurrent to two and then you would use up 8 threads of your 9 so that you would have a single core left for another project. |

Well since I have never run N-body tasks before, it was a guess as to the appname. Check your client_state file for the actual project appname. Hi Keith, Ok, so I have 2 multi-thread tasks running at a time (2 cores each) and I have 5 singles running. :) Here's my app_config.xml file: <app_config> <app> <name>milkyway_nbody</name> <max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent> </app> <app_version> <app_name>milkyway_nbody</app_name> <plan_class>mt</plan_class> <avg_ncpus>2</avg_ncpus> <cmdline>--nthreads 2</cmdline> </app_version> </app_config> I have one more question: Will allowing more cores for the MT tasks and less MTs running be more efficient, or does it really matter? Thanks again Keith and have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. I have one more question: Will allowing more cores for the MT tasks and less MTs running be more efficient, or does it really matter? I have no idea. As I stated, I have never run MT tasks before. Either read through the threads about n-body or ask one of the people already running MT about their experiences. I suspect it doesn't really matter. The task will probably run as it was designed, for so many FLOPS operations until finished. You will likely produce more credit by crunching through more tasks faster by running more threads. But if you don't want to have n-body MT tasks dominate your host, you have to throttle them somehow. |

Greetings, I have received a large number of erred GPU tasks. I have checked and I am still running on the NVIDIA v450.102.04. For whatever reason v460 will not cooperate; don't understand why. Here is my list of 26 tasks with errors. Here is one example of the 26. I cannot make heads or tails out of this. Please help! Thank you in advance. :) Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Segmentation violation. Usually attributed to bad memory or to too aggressive cpu or memory overclocks. Might just need a wee bit more cpu or memory voltage. At least try the latest drivers and see if they make any difference. |

Segmentation violation. Usually attributed to bad memory or to too aggressive cpu or memory overclocks. Hi Keith, This will be for Mikey too. This is gonna be a long reply with lots of copied and pasted items! :( (1.) I do not mess with voltages and do not overclock CPU, memory or GPU. I run everything at factory settings. (2.) I did not remember exactly why NVIDIA v460 would not work so I went and did the (recommended) driver install again. This time was even worse than the last 2 or 3 times I tried the update. First off, I remembered what the problem was before; I could not get my display into it's native resolution which is 1920 x 1080. This time when I tried the update I get this error message: pk-client-error-quark: Error while installing package: installed nvidia-dkms-460 package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10 (313) (3.) After the copy of the above message I run 5 updates before rebooting and got this error message: E: nvidia-dkms-460: installed nvidia-dkms-460 package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 10 E: nvidia-driver-460: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured (4.) After the copy of the above message I clicked the OK button and get a message to open the details of the updates and this is it: Preconfiguring packages ... I went into the drivers manager and reinstalled v450 NVIDIA, rebooted and got my native resolution back. By the way, I had BOINC shut down during all of the above operations. ;) I'm still running a GTX 1660 Ti video card. I noticed above that a "sanity check" was done several times and they say something about modules not existing in the kernel. If you go to my profile page you can see the specifications about this PC. I have been seeing some weird artifacts now and then; blocks of white flashing on the screen for a second or 2 so I'm thinking that I may be in need of a new motherboard, CPU and video card that are more up to date. I am running 8th Gen Intel. And no, I'm not switching to AMD!!! ;) The artifacts showed up no matter what version of NVIDIA driver I was running. I'm gonna end this here, since it is extremely long for one thing, and check my stats page to see if there are any changes after doing this. Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr XO - L L & P _\\// USS Vre'kasht NCC-33187 Winders 10 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L.
