Message 71751 - Posted: 11 Feb 2022, 23:27:30 UTC - in response to Message 71724.

I'll go through them in order:

Error loading Lua script 'astronomy_parameters.txt': [string "number_parameters: 4..."]:1: '<name>' expected near '4'
Switching to Parameter File 'astronomy_parameters.txt'
<number_WUs> 4 </number_WUs>
<number_params_per_WU> 26 </number_params_per_WU>

This isn't really an error, it's just the program saying "I didn't find a Lua script, so I'm going to use the parameters file instead". This is actually what we want (the lua script is outdated, and we use parameter files now). This shows up in every workunit.

Build log:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C:\Users\MG\AppData\Local\Temp\comgr-2def57\input\CompileSource:183:72: warning: unknown attribute 'max_constant_size' ignored [-Wunknown-attributes]

__constant real* sg_dx __attribute__((max_constant_size(256 * sizeof(real)))),
^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3 warnings generated.

The warnings that you linked are compiler warnings, so they aren't expected to cause any problems. It just means that the code is written in a way that the compiler doesn't "prefer". This shows up in every workunit.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Estimated AMD GPU GFLOP/s: 366 SP GFLOP/s, 73 DP FLOP/s
Warning: Bizarrely low flops (73). Defaulting to 100

This one seems to be related to your graphics card, because it doesn't show up in every workunit. Separation does an estimate of how long the WU will take to run before it starts calculations. It does this by looking at how many FLOP/s (floating-point operations per second) your GPU can do. If it's below some expected threshold apparently it comments on that and then warns you that it is actually using another number for the calculation. This could actually be due to the graphics card that you're using, or it could be due to a quirk in how Separation calculates the FLOP/s. Either way, I don't expect it to change anything about the actual calculation.

Thanks Tom for the answer and explanation.
Now I can process the WU safely.

I've deleted the comments arguing about whether the credits or science matter. Everyone does this for different reasons, and it's okay that someone might not be doing it for the same reason as you. Let's keep things civil and not resort to name-calling.

I was under the impression that the credits were calculated automatically by the number of workunits that you crunch (and how long those WUs take to crunch). I'll look into things and make sure that we are calculating the credits correctly, because you should be getting more credit if you are crunching more work.

Yeah I'm not really sure what's up with that. It seems to come and go. I think it might have to do with RPI's internet and not with the project itself.

I'm off to Einstein if you're going to take that attitude. Science is the ONLY thing that matters. Say goodbye to 6 GPUs and 9 CPUs.

I think it would be great if everyone thought that science mattered more than financial gain, but unfortunately that's not how everyone feels. If I was in it for the money I wouldn't be getting a PhD in physics! There are also people who do this for a hobby, and some of those people like to see the credits go up in order to to track how they are contributing and get a sense of satisfaction. We don't want to alienate anyone from this project, and all contributions are greatly appreciated, regardless of their motivation - at the end of the day, science is getting done no matter why the person runs milkyway.

It's also my job to make sure that our forums don't contain arguments and name calling instead of conversations about the project or science.

I'm very sorry if this makes you feel unwelcome in this project, and we will miss your contributions.

Yo Tom,
I would hate to see you truck off to Einstein. From my point of view, you have been the glue that holds this Project together. If you are a little restless and out of sorts it may be due to the much dreaded winters in northern New York. You may find that Utopia is no where near Einstein.
There seems to be some rhetoric bouncing around "I love science", "I love recognition of contribution", etc.. We all do it for our own reasons and you can't deny the validity (there's that word again) of any of them, I, personally do it to avoid freezing to death during the Wyoming winter (far more potent than NY winters. My computers heat my house.
Your job is not to define a good MilkyWay client . i, for one will find it difficult to do without your help, They might even miss my 132 CPUs and 36 GPUs (hey, I was a SETI guy for 21 years).

Money I could understand, but just points? I'm getting angry at the wrong person, I have no quarrels with you or the good you're doing for science, I will not be leaving. Besides, my DP cards wouldn't be happy doing that boring SP stuff. And don't tell Einstein but your project looks more interesting. Ignore my low RAC, I run it through Gridcoin.

You misunderstood, it was me threatening to leave. I also heat the house (and converted garage to parrot aviary) with GPUs. Yeah the heat pump is more efficient, but less fun.

Well, maybe I wouldn't have misunderstood if you stated that you were merely considering moving your computers to Einstein. My advice to you would have been the same. Don't go; Einstein at home is not a nice place.

Nothing wrong with it, apart from requiring better GPUs. I can run their gamma app on 60% of my cards and gravity on 20%. The people in there are just as nice as anywhere else.

I received a reissue of work unit 346867089 that failed to validate and eventually resulted in a "Too many errors (may have bug)" status. The work unit has 3 "Completed and validated" tasks and 4 "Validate error" tasks (including mine).

As far as I can tell, this is the only WU I've received (observed) that failed to validate.

Page (and task outputs) are archived here.

Do work units of this nature need to be reported here like this?

They should be able to see them at their end. Ones which fail on too many computers will stop being handed out and presumably get put in a pile of dodgy work units for them to look at.

Having said that, that task has 3 validated ones, and only requires 2 (see quorum number), so it's fine.

Maybe it doesn't like certain hardware? Universe@home has a problem with random Android phones. They can't work out what causes it. Randomly mine gets stuck on tasks, yet another phone will then do it after me. Also ones that failed on another phone work on mine.

I'm going to guess that's due to server overload as it's running on a degraded disk set until they get another installed. See also "Workunits waiting for validation 821171" and this forum is going very slowly. They never normally run out of work here.
