Message 73280 - Posted: 4 May 2022, 3:47:25 UTC - in response to Message 73278.

I got the Mac to run some of the more obscure apps that Macs can run
As long as it can do something. I used the have a tiny Nvidia GPU with a 4cm fan that could do nothing but SETI. It died just before SETI did.

but it seems mine can't be updated to a version new enough to do that, for a cpu it's got:
CPU type GenuineIntel
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5482 @ 3.20GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 6]
Number of processors 8

So it will crunch great it's just not the fastest pc around.

I can put Windows 11 on something older than that. I wonder if you can force a new Mac OS to do the same? I used Rufus to get Windows 11 to go on.

I don't know but it isn't worth it anyway, just unplug the Mac drive and plug in a Linux drive and crunch away without all the overhead Mac's have.
I have it running some PrimeGrid tasks right now which isn't a problem as at least most of their projects have Mac apps. I also use the monitor, I just unplug it from the Mac, while the Mac keeps crunching, and plug into a Linux or Windows pc so I cut down on the number of monitors or wires running everywhere. The Mac monitor wiring has 3 separate wires that need to be plugged in to work but the HDMI plug is the exact same as on a standard gpu.

What annoys me is they don't have anything for Intel GPUs (as in the ones built into i5, i7, etc.) which doesn't make sense as they run OpenCL just like the AMD cards they do support. 7 years ago someone said you could mess about with a config file to force it to do certain Primegrid tasks on Intel GPU. I've asked what the current status is.

I also use the monitor, I just unplug it from the Mac, while the Mac keeps crunching, and plug into a Linux or Windows pc so I cut down on the number of monitors or wires running everywhere.
I have my main computer in the house with 5 screens, for games, internet, TV, everything. In the garage is a huge deep bookshelf with everything else on it (the other 6 computers and countless GPUs lying loose on USB risers). I have a monitor, keyboard, mouse out there for troubleshooting, but normally everything is controlled remotely from my main computer in the house.

The Mac monitor wiring has 3 separate wires that need to be plugged in to work but the HDMI plug is the exact same as on a standard gpu.
WTF? Apple have redesigned HDMI? [facepalm]

No not the HDMI plug itself it's the same but there are 2 other wires running with it that plug into the Mac Desktop in my case or it won't work. I think one is power but I have no idea what the other one is, they have specific places they plug into.

Sorry about that, I've turned systems back on! You should be able to get WUs again.

I was worried about if people were going to not be able to get Separation because Nbody has a huge number of WUs again. If that continues then I will have to do something about it, but for now let's just see if the feeder system catches up to thing.

100 new units have now arrived - all N-Body(8 CPU). Thank you, I was down to my last 7 Separation units, so only a few minutes with a spare thread.

All of my stuck N-Body uploads have cleared. I am off to other pastures.
That is always the way it is each time I try either CPU or GPU work.

Direct your fustrations at the "programmers" that wrote Boinc. It really is a piece of crap. It falls over just because a queue is too big.

I got a similar piece of nonsense on the client using Einstein. I asked for AMD GPU and CPU work, and immediately got 10 days of CPU work and nothing else, presumably there was a shortage as their server is also overloaded. But then my client decided not to bother asking for AMD GPU work because it had a lot of stuff to do for a completely different chip. In the messages tab I just got "Not requesting new work (CPU: job cache full, AMD GPU: )" - as in no reason given. Yet when I turned on another project, it got AMD work for that. Er....

I will but not today I'm pooped after watching 2 guys install 4 tv's in my new home and get the surround sound speakers installed and working too. They had to bring the brackets and speakers with them but most of the wires were pre-run.

There's no 'old stuff' as we brought our tv's with us when we sold our old home to move into this new one, the stuff was in storage for a year in between but it seems ll is working at least so far. Yes I have 4 tv's, actually I have a 5th upstairs that will be just for streaming at least right now. I have a great room, master bedroom and 2 guest rooms on the main level and then a room the size of my 2 car garage upstairs that is an overflow bedroom and will be for the grandkids as the grow up, they are 3 and 6 right now. My whole house is about 1800 square feet and mostly fills up the lot I'm on so there's not alot of grass etc. The key here is location, location, location.

Not enormous then, I was expecting bigger. Mine is 500 sq ft plus 134 sq ft for the extension. I only paid $61K for it in 2000. It's worth three times that now.
