Seems to me the purpose is to recognize active contributors ('users of the day'), not posthumously where that recognition would invariably escape their attention.

(3/19/22) - 'User of the day' is Evil-Dragon, last connected 11-19-2011 and number crunched a whopping 2 days on his primary computer. Probably played Star Wars: The Old Republic and thought it more entertaining.

They don't do that because some projects don't have very many active users and they would be cycling thru too often, so the Server Software comes with it set to randomly pick a user from those that have crunched.

The actual reason is old coding back in the day when the devs didn't account for high participant mortality and project growth. Rosetta is one project which did a quick tweak I understand to only spotlight recent contributors. Nevertheless it is interesting to see just how large the crunching graveyard is. The vast majority rarely run a project for more than a few months .. and probably much less.

(4/2/2022) - user of the day '[B^S] dparmen1'. Hasn't returned work since Nov 2008 but at least gives me encouragement that if I quit my contribution will be noted 13 years later .. if I'm alive to care.

Part of the problem is the lack of funding for the Boinc Developers so they have reverted to mostly just keeping things running and the Projects get limited help pretty much only when they ask for it. YES there is a forum for the Project Admins to talk to each about Boinc etc but alot of them are waaaay too busy doing other things like teaching etc. I'm not making excuses for them just trying to help explain why it takes soooo long sometimes for things to works it's way into all the different projects.

It appears the User of the Day selector's default filtering excludes users with average credit less than one (from BOINC v1.0.4 source that MW is currently on).

Considering [B^S] dparmen1 has a RAC of 0.08, they should've been excluded from being considered for the UOTD unless MW is already using a custom selection criteria.

PS. Not a BOINC developer or a project maintainer so my apologies if I've misinterpreted the code.

PPS. I checked a few other BOINC projects (SRBase, TNGrid, Universe) and they all had old users with <1 average credit as the UOTD. So it's probably something in the standard BOINC code and my earlier observations may not be relevant.

UOTD was created to entice people to keep crunching because they might see their name come up, so yes it's in the very early Boinc Server side code. And the problem with coding, especially the Boinc stuff, is that coding for something could be in an area that you would not expect to find it because it made sense to that coder at that time. ie the coding for the 10 minute back-off getting gpu tasks here was changed by a previous Admin to solve a problem MilkyWay was having with the faster and faster gpu's but now the current Admins can't find that coding anywhere because it's not in the 'expected' place.

It's a random pick of the Users signed up for the Project nothing more than that.

If you look at my signature below you will see a small number to the far right of the box, 14, that is the number of times I've been User Of The Day at projects for as long as I've been crunching, 40 years now.
