Yep, just noticed that it's been over a day since I got any more tasks too. Just doing separation and just using CPU, server message says GPU tasks are available but nothing coming for CPU it seems.I've only tried separation GPU and that isn't giving anything out either. |

Today 90% of my Separation tasks are validated, great stuff! Seems the issues are reaching their end, thank you Tom again for you hard work in keeping the crunching alive :) And remember people, credit is secondary, what really counts is that we are helping scientists in their work to better understand our Galaxy! |

The issues are doing nothing of the sort, I have a computer pestering the server every 2 minutes and I'm getting GPU tasks about 20% of the time. But.... I've found the problem! I've located a top secret photograph of the Milkyway server. I think I might know what's wrong with it: |

Seems like not enough tasks are beeing generated. To say it differently: not fast enough. Refreshing a Milkyway page usually takes more than one minute. It is high time for a hardware update ... |

I took me 10 minutes to access this webpage, and another 10 minutes to post. The only conclusion I can come to is the Milkyway server is a 486. If we look at the address "milkyway.cs.rpi.edu", then just go to "cs.rpi.edu" we find it's in the Computer Science section of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The computer science section, and they can't provide a usable server. Mind you, a polytechnic? So not a real university then. Run on a shoestring budget. We have offered to donate...... |

... We have offered to donate...... For all crunchers: https://securelb.imodules.com/s/1225/giving/index.aspx?sid=1225&gid=1&pgid=3676 It works! Happy Sunday ! |

I see you have a badge which I think means donation. I don't. I would, but I'm not working just now and have no money. Thanks for your help. I hope Tom gets some shiny new kit at some point.... We have offered to donate...... |

@Peter: Sorry, that was not addressed to you personally - just for ALL other crunchers. If everybody would give, let's say, 5US$, things would probably be fine ... or at least better ... Yes, that badge means the person has donated! Just hover over it and it will tell you what it means. |

@Peter:It's ok, I didn't think you were having a go at me. If I had spare cash I'd donate, but paying the electric bill is hard enough! |

.... If I had spare cash I'd donate, but paying the electric bill is hard enough! My smart grandma would say: "stop crunching for a couple of days and you'd have a bit to donate" ... She alway bothered me with such comments on other issues I had, but she was usually right. |

I owe a few grand on the electric, a few days wouldn't help. What would help is if some of my 15 parrots made baby ones..... If I had spare cash I'd donate, but paying the electric bill is hard enough! |

At least in the US, grad school in science programs (certainly physics) is kinda like a job. You get paid by the school to teach and by the government to do research. It’s not enough money to buy parrots or GPUs or lots of electricity, but you can live off of it. It’s a fun job too, but it takes a lot of work. As for ability, all you need is a lifelong determination to live a highly focused life and have skin thick to scientific criticism, which many of us don’t actually want to do.I stopped my Physics education with my BA. The ability for folks to progress beyond that is something I can only marvel at.+1 I have a BSc Hons in Physics and wish I'd continued. |

I've never used RAID before but I was unaware that a disk rebuild takes so long. The website is painful to use. Everything takes forever to populate. My Inconclusives are 3X more than validated which is not normal for me. |

It depends on the capacity and the technology being used – HDD vs SSD, etc. Can take up to maybe a day or two. |

By grad school do you mean after the initial 3/4 year degree? In that case it's the same in the UK. But I got fed up of learning after 4 years. At least in the US, grad school in science programs (certainly physics) is kinda like a job. I've never used RAID before but I was unaware that a disk rebuild takes so long.It doesn't. I used to rebuild disks in hours, without impacting user performance one bit. But I had the sense to use equipment that was up to the task. Clearly MW was only just coping, and any tiny thing like a disk rebuild is the end of the world. It's nothing special, it's just copying the data from the good disks to the new disk. In fact how does he cope with backups? |
