Message 74034 - Posted: 4 Aug 2022, 9:02:17 UTC

One of my computers won’t update when looking at the list of computers. The machine is running normally but I am not getting credit for the work it is doing. I tried a shut down, but when I restarted it, same thing. Event log is normal too. Any ideas? Thanks Angie

You are going to have to be more specific on which computer it is as everyone that has talked to the Server today has hundreds of valid tasks associated with it

Thanks for the reply. The ID is 931664. The last time that MW shows contact with a server is August 1 at 12.08 UTC. The event log shows uploading finished work units and also downloading new work units. I have shut it down 2 times, and the second time for 20 minutes. When it is restarted, it goes through CPU benchmarks but on the website it still doesn’t move except to show my average credit for this computer dropping. Angie

It shows 8 valid tasks for you from the 22nd thru the 1st and you are using both the cpu and the gpu to crunch here, if you don't have an app_config.xml file one thing you might try is to change the setting in Boinc Manager to only use 5o% of the cpus, so 2 cores, and then get tasks for both the cpu and the gpu and see if things don't work better for you. The problem is the N-Body tasks uses all the cpu cores and that doesn't leave any for the gpu to use, but setting it to only use 2 cpu cores yes the N-Body tasks will take a bit longer but the gpu tasks will go right on thru and you should see your recent average credit, RAC, going up again.

Thank you so much Mikey for replying to me. I think there might be a misunderstanding about what is happening. The computer has ran far far more than 8 valid tasks. It is running normally, one of the uploads from yesterday (or the day before, I’m away from the computers now) showed 11 tasks uploaded and it received 8 new tasks. It just keeps crunching away, the same as always, according to the event log and if you look at the due date for the tasks, new ones with due dates farther in the future keep getting downloaded. The problem is that the project doesn’t acknowledge this. I get no credits for work done, after August 1, and even though I have shut the computer down a total of 3 times, the last 2 times longer than 20 minutes, nothing changes. When I restart it, it goes through the normal startup of checking CPU benchmarks, then starts working normally. The project never acknowledges the restart. Where it says “last contact with project” it never changes from August 1. If I shut down and restart any other computer, last contact will show when I started the machine as it should be. It is a project problem, not a problem with my computer. I wonder where the credit is going? Is someone else getting the credits? I don’t know. Just before I left for the weekend, I set it to “no new tasks” so it will empty out the work units. If this isn’t fixed in the next couple days, I thought I would take the computer to my computer guy and have the operating system reloaded. That way the project will think it’s a different computer. I really don’t know what else to do, and I’m not 100% sure that a reload will work. Thoughts? Angie.

... excuse me for "butting" in, but I think that this is not a problem of your computer.

I wonder if you have a duplicate entry for one and the same computer.
So that the statistics are updatet on the second "shadow" PC.

I would check the list of your computers and at the bottom/end of it you have the choice to merge computers.
Try it. Can't do any harm!

If no success, just ignore me thinking ...

cheers

Thanks. I have not put on a new computer for a while. There is no shadow machine. I guess that my only choice is to try and reload the operating system so the project thinks it is a different machine. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Angie

What did the "merge" say?
Did you expand the list to "all" computers before merging?
No duplicate machine names?
Very strange ...

Have a nice day!

EDIT:
No new computer needed to get a second/duplicate PC-name.
I switched the main bord on the same PC, which resulted in a second entry in the computer list -- same name, but different ID. Had to merge the list to fix it.

A test to try -- this is what I'd do on a linux system, and I presume it's possible on a Windows client...

Find your boinc_client [or boinc?] directory on the machine in question, and locate a file called sched_request_milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway.xml

Near the top of that file should be a line something like
  <hostid>123456</hostid>

The number is the host ID that the particular system is reporting to the server...

If that matches what you're expecting, you're no nearer an answer; however, if it doesn't match you have some useful information...

By the way, the server tasks information for the host ID you originally provided still hasn't shown any progess; if you really are requesting as host ID 931664 something might be broken at the MW end ;-(

Cheers - Al.

Also check the date on the actual pc, make sure it says todays date when you look at it

Rather than reload the OS try doing a reset of the Project itself from within the Boinc Manager, click on Projects then on the list find MilkyWay and it will say 'reset project', doing this will abort any existing tasks you have on the pc but give you new updated files if any and new tasks

Well if there is such a thing as a giant Egg On Your Face emoji, I deserve it big time!!!! Mikey was correct about the work units. What happened, was a lot of my machines need plugged into the internet instead of a wireless connection. About every 2 days, I unplug the internet cable from the computer in question and plug it into a nearby slow laptop for a quick up/download. The first thing I did wrong was I left it plugged into the laptop. Then, when trying to look at the problem, I was looking at the wrong computer, even though they are all labeled! This is what happens when I am in a hurry to pack the camper for one of my husbands races! I am sorry for any inconvenience. All is well now. Thanks everyone for trying to help me. Angie.
