Well that's a disappointment. Oh well.... one less gpu project I guess. I personally disagree with Ian & Steve. Whilst having someone who's good at code, it has kinda destroyed any team challenges when the playing field becomes even more distorted by having people who are good at writing code. From a team & challenge perspective, it's one reason I have lost a bit of interest in team challenges. There's no point. From a personal perspective, good on the GPU users team for being able to help each project to achieve more and more results. Science wins there. I'll just keep chugging along until power prices completely cripple me (which isn't far off when you have a mortgage & family to support) Prices are rising again by something like 30% on 1st July :( On that basis my next bill would be about AUD$2200 for the quarter which is ridiculous. Thank you for keeping the project up and running for so many years. It will be sorely missed. |

I bought much of my hardware with Separation's rather unique FP64 requirements in mind. It's a shame that it is ending. Time to flog off those P100's :D |

I think this is a good thing. This indicates that the Separation project will have a scientific research achievement. May I ask when this paper will be published? |

Great that the project has reached its goals and will publish the paper resulting from all the data. But really disappointing personally, as a SETI@home "orphan", 21 years there, move here after it shuts down, and after 2 years this also shuts down, at least for what I can crunch. And I'm saying that despite NOT using the GPU, I've always done CPU only (and this computer only has integrated graphics anyway), but I've only been getting Separation tasks, so no more of those will mean no more at all. Maybe it has to do with being on 32-bit Win 7? [Edit: Yeah, that's it, checked the applications list.] Still, if I can weigh in, while I'd of course personally prefer it to go on for as long as possible, I guess if you say six months tends to be the time until publication and you target the end of the year, it'd make sense to stop generating new work at the end of the month, though resends should be allowed to make their way through the system until all generated work has valid results. So... The next question is what can I move to that's space or environment related and works on 32-bit Win 7, CPU only and has similarly low memory use? Just 2 cores, so 2 tasks if it's one per core, and SETI@home tended to use about 75 Mb RAM for 2 tasks, Milkyway@home only uses about 10 Mb for Separation, which is just awesome. The others that I tried of the quite few projects from those categories just crippled my computer because of their use of my low amount of RAM, hundreds of MB per task, could hardly crunch while using the computer. |

"However, we understand that if your goal is to use GPUs to obtain a large amount of credit quickly, there are more efficient ways to do this and other projects that can better use your resources." My goal using GPUs was to process more information for the project, not to get lots of credits. Some might do this, I was more interested in helping with the science. Probably like others, I am a Seti@home orphan too, but congratulations to milkyway@home for achieving their goal! Look forward to reading the publication. I'm moving back to Einstein@home on a couple boxes but will leave one milkyway@home dedicated box running. |

In addition to some projects listed in previous posts, your CPU is 64-bit capable so an upgrade to a 64-bit OS is possible (you likely already know this but still). I downloaded some Asteroid@home tasks and they were using very little memory in the short time I ran them (less than 10 MB of memory per task). |

Great that the project has reached its goals and will publish the paper resulting from all the data. According to this page Moo Wrapper has 32bit cpu tasks as well https://moowrap.net/apps.php |

Sorry, that's way to whiny for how I actually feel. Lemme start over, What great news! This is exactly what we have all been working towards! Is there any opportunity to port the n-body work over to Macs now? I would love to continue to support this project with my CPUs. |

First of all, congratulations on the results. Nice work! I'm curious though, I've been running on MacOS and the only tasks I've received are 'Separation' tasks. Does this mean that I will not receive any more work? Or will the 'N-Body' tasks now also be sent to my machine? Edit: I've just now noticed the post above, sorry about the duplicate question. |

I think you will have to use vmware fusion, Parallels, UTM, or Virtualbox to emulate linux. |

As others have said, keep 'em coming until there is no more scientific value to be extracted. I will leave my GPUs online until there is no more work. |

if it's not on your github, would you be willing to share what code you have already so that we can take a look? |

If the project is completed, maybe advanced 30 days notice will suffice in my opinion. Some crunchers just "set and forget" their rigs and may not read the boinc manager notices or even visiting this community message boards periodically or been notified via other channels. We have been bombarded with too many notifications everyday, so there is a tendency not to read every single one every day ;). Trying to balance between upsetting the volunteers with immediate hard stop to this sub-project (for e.g. ooops my rigs run out of work and just sitting idle) versus wasting too much gpu resources. Also some might want to hit their personal goals for this sub-project. My 2 worthless cents. |

Congratulations on reaching the goals for Separation, that's the news we all wanted to hear one day, as that means all our computing actually contributed to science. How long would you like us to wait before we shut down Separation?Simple: when the last result has been returned or is past the deadline and no replacement will be sent out. Just please don't do it like SETI with sending out multiple copies of same task and let them run even if the result has been successfully crunched by another computer and waste CPU/GPU cycles for nothing. Make it a nice and clean shutdown, preferably simply stop creating new WUs when you don't need anything more and let BOINC do the rest until all tasks are returned. It might take a bit longer than other ways to do it, but I think it's the best way to do it. |

https://github.com/Milkyway-at-home/milkywayathome_client I looked but it doesn’t seem like the N-body GPU code is there. |
