What about tasks that are completed but awaiting validation?

i happened to check the server state website and it shows that only 54 separation tasks unsent while in the morning it was close to 10 thousand, is this a sign of separation finally winding down perhaps?

Well Tom said:

N-body will still be running, and we appreciate anyone who wants to help crunch work for that application! ...

...We hope to see you stick around and help us continue crunching Nbody work in the future!

Can't imagine that just throwing work away that doesn't get validated is going to enthuse people to stick around.

i think one way not to waste cycles for now is to set milkyway at "request no new work" and wait till it gets sorted i guess?

I came to the forum to find out why tasks are still being sent out, their News item said "so we are going to shut down the Separation project in the near future", there is no suggestion, or even a hint, that users should have to set NNT. There will be many who don't come here and find that the project may be wasting their time and money. They really need to clarify what is happening, stopping work generation for Separation is the simplest way to shut this application down. Do they not know how to do that ?

Message 75818 - Posted: 21 Jun 2023, 20:38:08 UTC - in response to Message 75817.

Remember this Project is run by a rotating set of college grad students and one Professor that is very busy doing other things most of the time and who himself has only been doing it for a short time, that means that the institutional knowledge that most projects have is not there at Milky Way. Yes they do okay with what they have but they don't seem to take advantage of the Boinc Forum for Admins either and instead try to figure it out on their own.
I know. That's another reason to simply stop creating new work and let BOINC take care of the tasks in progress.

I just checked the server status page and there are over 1 million separation tasks in progress and over 10k tasks ready to send out. That is also very strange considering it's now the 21st of June. Unless those tasks are re-sends that are needed than why are there over 10k separation tasks ready to send out?
They didn't turn off anything so far, 1.2-1.5 millions in progress is simply normal operation. Just the workunits waiting for validation piling up and now at 1.5 million indicate some issue with the server.

perhaps, as link said they seem to not use the admin BOINC forums and work on their own with limited staff

Discussion header said that it will be shutting down on Tuesday, Jun 20th.
Next Tuesday, Jun 20th is in 2028

Update... For people looking for Astrophysics related projects for their GPU's ...

Einstein has already been mentioned as a home for GPU's

And

Asteroids@home has NVIDIA app's for the following system groups

Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
Microsoft Windows running on an AMD x86_64 or Intel EM64T CPU
Linux running on an AMD x86_64 or Intel EM64T CPU

Enjoy

wonder if they cant shutdown separation because someone forgot the root password or something like that xd
I got fired for that. I'd started work one week ago, my boss had not told me the password, and he went on holiday. The server went terribly wrong one morning and I'd slept in. I got fired because I wasn't there to fix it, which I couldn't have anyway.

what went down is possibly this:
they TRIED to turn it off on the 20th and turned off SOMETHING
but ! it was the wrong thing tu turn off and they somehow destabilized the server and now are fighting with it to keep it working and all thoughts off turning separation off got forgotten
The server is HAL based. It didn't take kindly to being stopped from doing it's favourite thing. "What are you doing Tom? This is highly irregular. There is no apparent core overheat."

Nah I saw that yesterday temporarily, it just means it's busy.

99% of people won't read this forum. They just connect, crunch, come here if something doesn't work. I'm only here because I happened to check in the notices of Boinc (which is very rare).

Pointless as it's no faster than a CPU which is cheaper and uses less power. Put GPUs on projects where they run 50 times faster.

Mr Hucker that's a shame you find it pointless. I find tasks to run much faster on my GPU compared to my CPU

My old GTX 1060 turns an Asteroid task in about 26 minutes and it is ancient.
While I also run Einstein and Universe and Milkyway .. Asteroids deserves clock cycles as their science has value too.

In terms of the backlog of results waiting to be validated it would be sped up if would send out jobs with a higher number then _0 on them

How much faster? I can't see any CPU tasks on your history to make a comparison. And are you accounting for the CPU being able to do 24 at a time?

Agreed, which is why I stick it on my CPUs. But since the GPUs can go vastly faster on other projects, that's where they go. Why give a project to your GPU which it's not particularly good at?
