Message 75880 - Posted: 22 Jun 2023, 22:28:38 UTC - in response to Message 75875.

since it looks like you nuked the separation validator, what's going to happen to those ~2.4 million separation tasks waiting for validation?
Legend has it they weren't going to use them anyway.

that's not an answer to the question. whether they will be used or not has nothing to do with the fact that there are 2.5 million tasks waiting for validation and need to be dealt with somehow.

And in progress tasks weren't aborted by server, so people who still have some will be running them and then send them into the void I guess...
I wonder if the server will take them? If it's just the generator off, maybe it will. Otherwise we might have people with hundreds of completed tasks being repeatedly refused by the server.

Do they? If they run out of disk space perhaps. It's not like they're going to go mouldy or something.

I meant to try and post what happened, let one start, but then decided I didn't want it left dangling somewhere, and the way this was done was too... disrespectful to the users to bother, so just aborted all.

You did well to abort them considering they weren't going to be used for any purpose at all.

Could the Admins just run the credit granting scrip to all pending Separation work units, and once done then flush all the Separation work units from the Data Base?

I have over 1200 just sitting there and others would have many more.

It would tidy things up a bit and then they could concentrate on the N-Body work.

I will be back doing N-Body work units when some other commitments are met, wish they paid the same as the Separation work did.

On the Server Status page I see the following

Tasks ready to send 62785
Tasks in progress 1318168

Application Unsent In progress
Milkyway@home N-Body Simulation 30692 185315

They should equal and don't
In October of 1969 I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic;
There was no expiration date.

Are they updated at the same time? Boinc server is made of many different sections all talking to each other. If you look at Rosetta, their home page updates at a different time to their server status page. I wouldn't be surprised if different parts of server status were also updated seperately.

Scientists have science to do. Nevermind the credits, just clear it out.

Remember when Seti did that too and no one knew about for days, they gave credit even though they didn't do anything but trash the results as they were all resends of existing completed tasks

Sure, the tasks are in the database, so the scheduler will do it's job and mark them as returned, the transitioner will do it's job, but since the validator is gone, they will be just added to that huge pile of tasks waiting for validation.

That's because there are still over 1 million separation tasks in progress.

Well, at least they have let everyone report the tasks back. If they were smart, they would have significantly reduced the deadlines for those additional resends and used server abort for tasks, that were not needed anymore. That way they could have shut down few weeks earlier.

I was out from there before that bullshit started and the same I did here once I knew i'm just generating heat and not scientific results.

Why did we not just stop releasing tasks first and THEN shut down the project, so a whole bunch of work doesn't get stuck in pending validation?
Can we at least get points for the work even though the results are worthless?

Good points on both.
I have 19,614 WU in both pending and inconclusive. All are separation. It will be a huge morale buster if credits are not issued.
The work was made available to crunchers, who crunched in good faith. If the results are valid, the results should be credited.

P.S. All our CPU are belong to n-body

You'd think Dave Anderson had more intelligence than that. Boinc is for Science, credit is just a byproduct. Using electricity for credit is just plain bonkers.
