Why am I not getting any MilkyWay tasks? |

Because Milkyway does not have any MacOS apps anymore since Separation finished, only Windows and Linux and only 64-bit for both.

First SETI@Home retires, and now MilkyWay for Macs. :-( I already do Asteroids@Home and Einstein@Home — does anyone have any other favorite astronomy-related projects they contribute to if MilkyWay for Macs is now gone? |

First SETI@Home retires, and now MilkyWay for Macs. :-( Go here: https://stats6.free-dc.org/apps and put darwin in the search box at the top right of the page and press enter, it will bring up all the Boinc Projects and their applications that can use macs. |

First SETI@Home retires, and now MilkyWay for Macs. :-( I feel your pain. I didn't realize it was gone until today when it struck me I hadn't seen any work for a while. |

I hadn’t been paying attention for a while—seems my iMac hasn’t done any work since June. Is there any point to remaining attached to this project, or is it the end of the road? |

I hadn’t been paying attention for a while—seems my iMac hasn’t done any work since June. Is there any point to remaining attached to this project, or is it the end of the road? It's possible but not likely in the near future, there ARE people trying a various projects to offer their assistance in getting Mac OS apps up nd running but that is not as easy as it sounds for projects with very little continuity in their Boinc support, like MilkyWay. |

Is there any point to remaining attached to this project, or is it the end of the road?Well, there's no point to remove it, maybe reset it to remove the separation app and all those sticky files and than set it to NNT to avoid unnecessary scheduler requests. That way you can always easily come back in case applications for your computer become available. My computer is still attached to SETI@home for nostalgic reasons, even with the optimized apps still ready to use. ;-)

I was very disheartened when Seti@home left the Mac world years ago but using the link above for finding Boinc projects that work with Macs I see Set is still listed but it isn't in the Boinc menu. Strange. |

I just reactivated my account today - been doing WCG since 2009 but with a long hiatus. The only project I could find was Mapping Cancer Markers, which I'd been doing forever, so reading about the collision between the Milky Way and Sagittarius dwarf galaxy and how it's part of the MW@home project got me all excited. So I jumped through the hoops...only to find my new Mac is unacceptable to MilkyWay@Home. Nice. I don't understand the complexities of all this, including getting operating systems to cooperate with each other, but it seems kind of inexcusable to me given the ubiquity of Macs in the world -- not as many as Windows perhaps, and not as powerful as university Linux systems, but still worth something I would think. Well, so much for DEI! Back to WCG I guess. |

You might want to try Einstein@home, they have work for Mac OS X on PPC, Intel and ARM, so pretty much for any Mac, even for the iGPUs of Apple's M-processors.

Yes, einstein has iGPU Apple Silicon suport, as the only project, PrimeGrid acrually does too, but it rrquires you to install an old version of BOINC, which is very technical, though for einstein, you still have to change some settings to get, for me, 10 concurrent GPU tasks on my base M4 Mac Mini, but this doesn't matter to casual users. |

What does "since Separation" mean?Milkyway@home had an application called "Milkyway@home Separation" (or so), now they only have "Milkyway@home N-Body Simulation" and "Milkyway@home N-Body Simulation with Orbit Fitting", which are both actually the same application, just different version of it. and why does that mean no Apple Silicon tasks?Tasks for Apple's M-processors.

I have heard from older group members that the apple version of nbody would not work correctly and would give different results. There currently aren't any plans to fix it, but if I have some extra time on my hands I might look at it. I won't make any promises though; new code and bugfixes to the current versions will take priority. |
