Well... Like in other projects (like SETI), I'm beginnig to think that we needs a thread about the 'panic' situations (like outages, no communications with the project, etc...) that can affect to most of the users. We can concentrate all this information in only a thread and all users can find and be informed of these issues quickly and not open a multitude of threads one by one. It's only a suggestion... Firts example: Panic Mode On: Now, feeder, transitioner, file_deleter and db_purger are not running.[edit] And Transitioner backlog (hours) 2 [/edit] And when BOINC attempts to comunicate with the project says: 17/12/2008 21:04:08|Milkyway@home|Message from server: Server error: can't attach shared memory 17/12/2008 21:04:08|Milkyway@home|Deferring communication for 1 hr 0 min 0 sec 17/12/2008 21:04:08|Milkyway@home|Reason: project is down This can help to the users to know that is not only a local issue and to the admins to be aware of the problem. It would also help if the person/s is going to do work to the system to post that first before everybody wonders. Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |

It's a good suggestion Logan. I like it very much. The one drawback I can think of is that it's useful to search for information but looking through the thread titles, whereas in 'Panic Mode On' I might have to search through many posts, many of them the same about a topic I'm not looking for. Maybe we need a seperate message board for what you suggest - one for immediate problems/concerns rather than more general chat about number crunching. That way all reported problems would be contained in their own thread, in an easily identifiable part of the boards. |

Yes you have reason Ice, but the idea is to ask or warn in the thread general problems what can affect to the most of the users. For the local or seemed particular issues, can be one forum like you suggested. The idea is to have an Early Alert System what (if you subscribe the thread) can you do aware of the general (project) problems, and that can be informed by the users or the admins. Best regards. With only 8 WU's to crunch - hosts tend to run dry very quickly.... Hint Hint. Why not allow for 24 hours of cache, say 15 20 WU's per core. Just a thought. |

FYI. Panic mode is off... Now, the reports to the server and downloads are running fine. Best regards. Logan. BOINC FAQ Service (Ahora, también disponible en Español/Now available in Spanish) |

This situation of today is an example of the reason of being a thread like this... The people don´t knows if it is a local or general problem and create new threads claiming for help. In this case, they, could do a first check of the situation in the 'panic mode' thread and, if their problem is not general, then make a new thread with their issue... I think that could be good for all of us... Best regards. Logan. BOINC FAQ Service (Ahora, también disponible en Español/Now available in Spanish) |

The people don´t knows if it is a local or general problem and create new threads claiming for help. Some of this wouldn't happen if people would look and read instead of posting the same thing over and over and over. Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? Some of this wouldn't happen if people would look and read instead of posting the same thing over and over and over. True ... But in fairness to some of those people, sometimes the problems present themselves in ways that the person may not recognize that they have the same problems as the others. Or they simply don't know where to look. Computers, and BOINC are complicated and most of us are not that up on them. |

Some of this wouldn't happen if people would look and read instead of posting the same thing over and over and over. LOL... Agreed. Here's an anecdote you may find amusing, Paul. I was over on the BOINC Message Boards earlier today, and came across a relatively new poster (may even have been his first). He apparently had taken the trouble to go review and read the threads back to a little over a year or so ago, found one which appeared directly related and then posted in that one. Guess what... He got scolded for reviving an 'ancient' thread! So I guess you can file this whole conversation under the "You can't win for losing" category. ;-) Alinator |

I knew this was the wrong time to be checking in. The camera is a Canon 40D attached to a Sigma 50-500mm lens with a 2x multiplier taking it up to 100-1000mm. Camera and lens shown below are sitting on a Giottos monopod, photo taken with a Canon 400D. Click photo for a larger version |
