Hmmmmmm. What a difference a day makes. Or has it been a month? Was like this early on. Maybe a lot will happen quickly with some new/ more help now. Atleast some work is still getting made. Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |

It must be difficult in a small project where theres only a couple of people to keep things running, sort out bugs and add new bits when they have real jobs to do at the same time. I hate to imagine what has really happened, as even Blurf hasn't been able to find out any information during the honeymoon period of his modship. |

LOL... Come on guys... Just look at the Staff bio-snippets. Travis: Graduate Research Assistant. Dave: Undergrad Research Assistant. The rest... Post Here... Probably not. Sorry, that's just the way it is. As far as Joe goes, I'll be positive, and speculate he got lucky and made a clean getaway by graduating. Unless things about colleges and universities have changed a whole lot since I was in school: 1.) Research Assistant means you are a grunt, doing the work of two, three, four or more people (right up to the point where your endurance and sanity snaps), in a variety of disciplines which sometimes is a stretch to call 'research'. 2.) Grad and Undergrad indicates that they have their own course, project, and other non MW related work which must get done in the search for that ever elusive 'sheepskin' (to then frame, hang on the wall, and admire henceforth). 3.) They might even perhaps be harboring illusions of finding and landing a job, paying real money, in their chosen fields in the near future. Silly them. 4.) They might even be spending time trying to figure out why the MW programming chores they've got going right now aren't working out quite the way they expected. Shocking. So other than that, I can't think of any reason why they shouldn't be posting 20, 30 times a day with "It's not soup yet". :-D Alinator |

LOL... So what you're saying is,,,, that, *maybe*, they suddenly had a more interesting project to do, MW-GPU, so they dropped everything here and appointed Blurf so that they have an excuse with DA if we all go Guns 'n' Roses. Then, almost as suddenly, they graduated, got jobs, and dumped MW-GPU as well. All without telling us anything. And in the meantime we're all slogging our computers on MilkyWay, whether getting work or some or not, slogging away, some having added GPU cards to their slogging power, some deciding others amongst us are responsible for work distribution/shortage when, in fact, the zoo keepers have left, leaving the locks locked. ? That's right, I'm the gecko in this zoo ;) |

I'm a postgrad, and in my lab, the work goes: Professor/Boss: Can fire you. Do not anger. Potentially has mental deficiency. Use beer to placate, or show results before 9am or at the weekend. Make sure you're in the lab when he's coming for you. Post-Doc: Can do any project, sometimes has teaching duties. Often has a main project and 3-4 smaller ones with Post-Grads. Post-Grad: For all intents and purposes, lackeys. Purchased to churn out paper after paper, or do that random experiment the Professor (or the boss as I call him) has an idea for. Under-Grad: Doing a final year project, and about this time of year are finished and writing it up. Work gets shifted onto a Post-Grad, who has to filter through the unique practises of the undergrad. Summer-Student: Usually an undergrad paid for 8-10 weeks in the summer. Also an outlet for the Professor's mad ideas, or will get shifted onto a Post-Grad to do their monkey work. Depending on the size of the lab, or the amount of monkeys, work gets done. I'm in a group of 20+ (1 Prof, 3 PD, 13 PG, 4 UG, 3 SS) and we churn out papers til the fingers go blue - usually 2 to 6 per year per person. |

hahaha nicely written borandi and yes i guess thats how it is, the guys here am doing their normal work and have been Bossed to leave this " lower important fun project for a while " so we are left in the dark as usual with such projects. LoL i have a urge to allways anger those Boss/Professors :D But its easy to say for a guy who is needed by them ;) Thats why the probably all hate/love i.t. managers depending on their needs |

See PHD Comics for a lighthearted view of Borandi's ideas. I attended Jorge Cham's (i.e. the artist who did his PhD in robotics at Stanford) lecture on "THE POWER OF PROCRASTINATION" when he came here to Oxford, and was the first person there to buy and get all his (then) 3 books signed :) His strip is loved by postgrads and others the world over! |

Darnit Ice slowdown that RAC I'm throwing everything I have at MW right now, except for what I'm pushing at CPDN, Cosmo, GuppieGrid and Rosetta. It's interesting times for me. I'm turning in the most credits for my team and my country right now, and my RAC is the all time highest it has ever been for me. I think I'll let this candle flare a little longer and shine bright for this moment before summer arrives and it broils in my garage, and I wonder why I am spending on all this electicity and what on earth this is all achieving. But hey, I want to be in the top 20 for RAC and credits (again) and have a website with a billion hits :P |
