Message 24970 - Posted: 11 Jun 2009, 13:47:48 UTC - in response to Message 24952.

HELP REQUIRED.

I have a dual boot system running XP Pro and Vista.

BOINC ver.6.6.20
ATI 0.19f

1.Installed ATI 4870.
2.Installed Catalyst 9.1 for Win Vista. Works as should.
3.Installed Catalyst 8.12 for Win XP. Not working.

Followed instructions in readme file.
Any ideas why it works with vista and not XP?

You need to have net 3.5 installed with XP. To be on the safe side, I usually go into Windows Update and update everything.

I've net 3.5 sp1 installed, BOINC is downloading one wu at a time and processing it, at present, correctly. I have an app info.xml file edited with n3 (I know it's the default) but still recieving one wu and that immediately runs in high priority.
I really want to ditch Vista but until I can resolve this issue I'm stuck with it.

Your cache size needs to be set to less than 1 day.

But that will affect the other project(s), will it not?

Yes. Which projects have you got running on that machine?

It could depending on your settings. I have mine set at connect every .5 days & additional 5.5 days of work. I get the 6 wu here and ~9 10 hour units at rosetta.
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.

I've lowered the cache, and has no effect, still does not explain or resolve, why on the same hardware (dual boot with different display driver versions), same preferences, XP and Vista respond differently?

I'll try putting the same driver version on both machines and see if that works!

I've installed 9.1 and this just made things worse, in so far as repeated crashes of the graphics

Hi,
i just tried out all these things with cpu-z. I updated my client_state.xml, restarted boinc - and checked the setting. The xml file returned to the original settings without sse3, sse4.1.
In addition i found on an amd-processor 3dnow+
Does that make any differnce?
The system, which failed to update is a intel 9300 with xp pro sp3.

First thing you shold do is download GPU-Z (sorry, don;t have the link handy, but it is a TechPowerUp app). Click on the Sensors Tab and you can the GPU load. If it's above about 85%-90%, you will have problems with the responsiveness of the system.

And another thing that I would do, is drop your "n8" to "n4", unless it is an X2 card. My single 4850 1GB on an i7 works better if I keep the number of running processes at 4 or below.

You've got the right idea, you just need to keep tweaking the settings until you find your optimum.

That should be the right app for you.
1. stop and turnoff Boinc, make sure the processes have stopped. (wait a min or two)
2. Add the unzipped files to the ...\BOINC\projects\milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway folder.
3. Start Boinc. If you have any current wu's they will be errored. Then next ones should work.

Well I downloaded SSE2 again. Shut down BOINC. Copied everything into the specified file. Restarted it.

It still is doing the work at an average of .010% per second. That's exactly what it was doing before.

Do you see something like this in you BPOINC manager in the messages tab, soon after starting the manager? ;
