Message 16710 - Posted: 23 Mar 2009, 22:28:35 UTC - in response to Message 16702.

Is it okay to use the .16 version? Any major bugs with it? Still get credit for it?

Just wondering as I accidentally downloaded the .16 version instead of the .19 from zslip and it seemed to be crunching away on some WU's...

I changed it to .19 and it seems slower... is that right? I figured with a newer version it would be faster.

I'd stick with the .19. It has more output info. Shouldn't be any slower, I don't think it has any changes to speed it up from .16.
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.

It's possible you were crunching slightly shorter WUs with the 0.16 app than with the 0.19 app. A ps_s7x or ps_s8x WU is shorter than a ps_s2x WU, I've noticed.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd give more weights on directx 9, 10, and 11, and catalyst drivers than the actual milkway gpu app!

Yeah, I figured that out. It's been awhile since I ran Milkyway and didn't notice the different length WU's.

Thanks guys!

Use CPU-Z to identify your computer's capabilities. (Follow the links to CPU-Z on the z-slip site.)

The consensus is that you should use the ATI Catalyst 8.12 driver and 0.19e for the best combination. I believe Catalyst 9.3 is too new, and 9.1 may work. If you want to know where to find the ATI drivers, then feel free to look here.

Not yet,as the nVidia cards seem only to be capable of single precision calculation where as the ATI cards deliver double precision and MW used double precision for accuracy.

The GT200 based Nvidia cards are capable of double-precision, but they have less shader units dedicated to the task than comparable ATI cards.

Ook, where to start.

I'm running Vista64bit, Boinc version 6.4.7, catalsyt 9.2. Trying to get the GPU version 19e running. I have edited the system 32 folder to what is saying in the read me file. I haven't altered the app_info.xml file just inserted it. Machine runs fine for a few hours but when I go back the units are just hanging. Other projects are running fine but milkyway seems to have just frozen.

Any clues to what I have done wrong please. Thanks for reading.

What is your resource share across the projects on that machine?

You need to have a reosurce share high enough so that BOINC doesn't preferentially crunch a different project.

I've seen that before (on XP64 though). MW WUs in running state (on GPU) but no progress whatsoever. It only happened right after catalyst installation + dll copy/rename, and nothing a reboot couldn't sort.

I've been away the last two weeks. Is there anything I need to update zslip with? Are you guys still using this site?

They were big. It was paradise.

Actually, the 'Vision of the Seas' isn't the biggest of paradise boats to cruise around the Caribbean, but it sure was paradise ;)

Thanks for melting welcome back. Fortunately the PCs I left on didn't melt since it seems they had hardly anything to do while I was away. Nothing new then :/
