Fantastic! Well done Brickhead!, that's done the trick for me :D

Uh-oh, does this mean I'd better watch my back now? :D

Happy to learn that my findings still hold water now that we have a statistical base of no less than 4 :P

I'm not sure what you're watching, but I'm watching two MW WUs steadily crunching on two machines, with each crunching a CPDN WU in addition.

Fantastic! Cheers Brickhead, you're a star! :)

<snip>

... it's as simple as getting the maths straight and give it a few hours.

Ok, I took out my 4850 since Windows 7 seemed too stupid to recognize it properly, thus not letting it work right for MW@home. I made the changes to my app info based on what you suggested. It burned thru my MW WUs and has let WCG take over, but hopefully as you say, after a while it'll balance out and keep get some more MW units. :)

Message 14451 - Posted: 8 Mar 2009, 21:54:38 UTC - in response to Message 14398.

The biggest thing I am curious about at the moment, is: I have a 3870 and a 4850 in it at the moment, but with n1, only one WU is running... shouldn't there be two?

You are right, the n parameter sets the number of WUs per GPU.
But I think the reason you see only one WU running is that the app recognizes only your 3870 card. You can have a look to the task details (on the MW website) to verify that.
I guess you have just put the 4850 in your computer. The problem is that the driver deactivates the graphics card, if no monitor is attached to the card (or no display active). The easiest solution would be to connect both cards to the same monitor (first card via DVI and the second via VGA).

Ahh, I wasn't aware it needed to be hooked up to anything. Sadly, the monitor they were hooked up to was an old CRT so no DVI. Good info for the future tho, perhaps if I replace the monitor someday or build a new box somewhere, til then I'll survive with just the one GPU crunching. :) Thanks for the insight. :)

Hi Guys

Re the message snippet below - is he loading a GPU capable WU, or did that load into CPU ? I am assuming it went to CPU, as he only has a NVIDIA (therefore CUDA) card/GPU

AMD promised better multi GPU support for future versions of the stream SDK (next version should be out within a week or two). What I'm doing now is actually a quick and dirty mod of the brook.dll.

For the time being you could use a VGA dummy. This "solution" is even mentioned by AMD staff in their forums.

The GPU app crunches exactly the same WUs as the CPU application. In that sense all WUs are GPU capable.

But one needs to install a special GPU application through the anonymous platform mechanism of BOINC to use the GPU for the calculations. In the moment these application is only available for Radeon HD3800 and HD4800 series cards. But the project is working on a CUDA implementation supporting the GTX line of nvdia.

In the future it may become possible to distribute the GPU apps by the project automatically. But there is still a lot of developement to do.

Nice work you are doing Cluster. :) Hopefully the boys that do the BOINC app itself can get some nice ATI support to make it easier to distrubute the different apps.

Thanks Cluster - fully understood. We have guy loading up over at SETI with a CUDA issue later in the message sequence, and wanted to check behaviour of MW V19 on load up as part of the jigsaw.

Much appreciated.

David Anderson, the main developer for BOINC, has said he'll integrate ATI support in, probably after 6.6, and once ATI sends him a card to work with.

And 6.6.x seems to be slipping two weeks per week in release horizon. And anyone that has been promised an item of hardware from a mfgr should not be surprised if it does not take more than 6 months and worse, will be the wrong item when it is sent.

Hi,

Is it possible to run CPU and GPU both MilkyWay applications at the same time?

Thank you

Sadly not on the same machine at this time.

Unless this is your only project it's better to divert the CPU resources to your other projects considering how fast the ATI cards are pumping out the results.

I agree with Misfit on this point. Use your CPU(s) for another project and your GPU for MW.

How about using your CPU for computer programs and your GPU to display graphics?
