SSDs are great, apart from sequential reads and writes. Random access and random reads/writes are where they excel. Also there's the issue of performance vs. life - thankfully Windows 7 will have the 'trim' command for SSDs which will keep the performance up longer, though at the expense of life (which will happily increase as the technology improves). Having just shelled out for an i7 chip, motherboard and RAM, my next upgrade is probably from a Raptor to an SSD. Oh and BTW, Ice, how many cards and machines you got running there? I've 2x4850 in a dual core and the throughput, even with the script where I used to be getting 20k/day per card, is abysmal. ![]() |

SSDs are great, apart from sequential reads and writes. I have seen reviews of Intel X25-M (80 GB) and the only part it was beaten in by the Velociraptor was in sequential writes where it was 20% slower. |

SSDs are great, apart from sequential reads and writes. SSD is still not able to be reliable in the throughput except if you can buy a raid solution with a bunch of them .... but to be honest you can buy 4 raptors for the price of one fast ssd |

SSDs are great, apart from sequential reads and writes. SSDs are still great, apart from sequential reads and writes. </end repeated spiel with zero facts and figures> If you want to load several programs at once, they wipe the floor with Raptors. If you want to transfer large files, why are you using an SSD with not so much space? It's simple - SSDs work well as a boot drive, other HDDs are more suited to large file opening and/or transfer. Also, about the price. My Raptor 150GB cost £150 when I bought it; now, that same price will get me a 64GB Samsung SSD, or 128GB Corsair one for £177. Show me where I can get four 36GB Raptors for £177... Even then, the four would still be abysmal on access time, and I'd have more chance of one being screwed over and losing my whole array (unless I went RAID 5, but then I'd need 5 36GB Raptors to keep the same space). I still wouldn't buy them, because A) I have a Raptor boot drive, and B) The rest of my SATA ports usually go to high capacity storage, such as the 1.5TB drives which are now £100. However, one of my future upgrades will be an SSD. ![]() |

Do you happen to know what the exchange rate from £ to USD is nowadays? ![]() |

Take a look at this page. 'Green' pile are representing sequential reads and 'Red' pile representing sequential writes and it is on a single disk, not a RAID configuration. |

those fast X 25 80 Gb mlc intels cost in my country about 300 euro a piece and those figures are part of the story, go have a look at tomshardware about ssd drives. Or other meaningfull tests which show where the bottlenecks are, its plain and simple in some cases the ssd will be awesome but still they cost a lot. When you get the hogging like i experienced you will talk differently this hogging appears when data gets rewritten fast in some situations like temp files written by the os and so on. Then all of a sudden these ssd aren't so fast enymore in fact it slowed down my machine to speeds below my slowest ata drive. No i did not use them to store my huge files i have a server for that. Yes the os boots quick from them but still there are more things to consider then just boot up a system, but if you do only boot to start boinc and nothing else yea they are great. About the prices a raptor 36 gb = 67,00 euro you could easily boot from them, the 150 GB costs 160,00 euro so almost twice the size for half the prize. Anyway intel has been working on the hogging problem a lot and seem to have fixed a few of the problems but that means that all the other builders have to fix their problems as well. |

The Bistromatic worked on the improbabilities due to the highly irrational numbers on a waiters bill not brownian motion. If I remember correctly it was brownian motion in a teacup that allowed the heart of gold to be produced in the first place. That and moving all the molecules in the hostesses undergarments simultaneously 3 feet to the left. |
