I just tried running the GPU app and every WU fails imediately with an output file absent error. I'm running HD4850, XP pro, Catalist 9.1, Boinc 6.4.5 and I copied the files to the milkyway folder. I rebooted, restarted boinc and upgraded to 6.6.0 all to no avail. Anyone got any ideas on what to do about this? |

Try the 8.12 Drivers instead ... If that doesn't work try BOINC Client v6.5.0 |

Try the 8.12 Drivers instead ... If that doesn't work try BOINC Client v6.5.0 Definitely try the the 8.12 drivers. I couldn't get the 9.1 drivers to work with my HD4850 when I first tried to install it and had instant success with 8.12. I'd also recommend BOINC 6.4.6 - I have that running with my HD4850 now and it seems to be purring away nicely, although it also ran fine with 6.4.5. |

6.4.6 was pulled because of the corrupted installer issue. 6.4.7 should be out soon. |

6.4.6 was pulled because of the corrupted installer issue. Corrupted installer? Will 6.4.7 be a pointless update for those of us who have successfully installed 6.4.6 (without any problems!) on multiple machines? |

6.4.6 was pulled because of the corrupted installer issue. If you have a copy running, you are fine. Many people cannot download a clean operational copy of the file. Rather than fix that UCB decided to compile a new version. |

Try the 8.12 Drivers instead ... If that doesn't work try BOINC Client v6.5.0 ATI is well known for releasing faulty drivers and following up with hotfixes (some of which are also faulty). It's the reason after all these years as an ATI customer I switched to nVidia. They might not be as powerful but at least their stuff works. me@rescam.org |

Try the 8.12 Drivers instead ... If that doesn't work try BOINC Client v6.5.0 We're lucky to have Cluster Physik and his team to test and recommend which drivers, although, as I say, I couldn't get the 9.1 drivers to work, even with my HD4870. I had both HD4850 and HD4870 running with 8.12, and am now running 9.2 with both successfully (ummmmm, 9.2 doesn't work, it says so on zslip ;) |

Just started to crunch MilkyWay with two HD3850, Windows7/64/Beta, CCC 9.1, BOINC 6.6.11, no more problems with downloading WUs, but the performance could be better perhaps. I´m happy with it, running @stock, don´t want to tweak any parameters or clock rates (at the moment). |

Unrelated to the topic, and I apologize, but how does the ATI app function with two different ATI cards installed on a machine? |

In a similar vein - it there is an Nvidia card fitted, and running normal graphics, what would happen if an ATI care is installed on the same PC? |

To answer both questions, not very well at the moment, even with an X2 card, see here but it is being worked on, have patience |

I'm running CCC 9.1, 6.4.5 on an hd4870. if you were already running milkyway, were you running an Opti app before going with the gpu app? switching back & forth, I found I had to detach from MW then reattach, abort any wu it downloads during the reattach, then close Boinc, copy in the gpu files and restart boinc. |

Pretty much the reason I never even started buying ATI, though I'm seriously considering a 4870 so I can do some serious MW crunching. |

I don't update consistently, don't see a need to now as the cards are old. Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |

It's the reason after all these years as an ATI customer I switched to nVidia. They might not be as powerful but at least their stuff works. I have an old 9800 Pro in my Win98 system. It still works. However a set of drivers did something that killed my X850. I tried to upgrade from that (I can't remember to what) and the drivers on that card was shot. Mega complaints from the ATI support forums to Newegg reviews. Previously my last nVidia card was a GeForce 3. me@rescam.org |

Most people have had troubles, but there are always a few that will not. Why? Who knows, BIOS, MB, Chipset, dust, phases of the moon, proper rituals involving dead chickens (you don't want to know) ... but, the note is a general warning rule. At GPU Grid it took awhile to find configurations that worked well ... I am not sure we really have a good consensus here as to the overall best configuration because the ATI is still not recognized as a resource even so that kinda messes things up still. I call it the "more money than brains" attribute. Which is certainly true in my case, and I freely admit that. In my case I can regularly go out and buy new and faster systems dropping off the older and slower ones as time wends on... If and when we get this application working it is very likely I will do here what I did for GPU Grid, and that is buy several top end cards to put into one system that will be my Milky Way "beast" (or I will try the mixed system for laughs to see if I can do that instead, even if I have to downgrade to Vista to accomplish the dirty deed). Anyway, be comforted, Einstein just admitted that they have a CUDA and OpenCL versions in the works ... which is good news in that history says that the Einstein folks will also contribute to the client side and server side development to get things to work right. |

Buck said, and; zslip has an advice not to use 9.2 rather that an order (you can use what you like, don't look at zslip even ;) There are problems with using 9.2 such as ATI/AMD screwing up naming conventions in change over in brand name affecting naming of system files, and probably other issues I don't understand, since I'm not as clever as the guys and gals testing 9.2 ;) I decided to give it a try and am always poised to revert back to 9.1... |
