Looks like I need to clean my graphics card...temps have gone up a few degrees since I installed it. Mind you it could just be the warmer weather this week. But at 88°C when I got home from w#$^ yesterday with an ambient of 28°C inside the house it's a little too hot for my liking.

Message 16086 - Posted: 19 Mar 2009, 21:02:02 UTC

Yesterday I went to see a Packard Bell Easynote laptop (model that traditionally gets quite warm) which the owner said was getting "excessively hot".

He'd taken the cover off the bottom over the CPU to get extra air in, and had stood the thing on a book each end because it was scorching the table. It was hard to see what was going on, the fan was running fullspead and hot air was blasting out everywhere.
After being off for about 10 minutes I felt brave enough to touch it and removed the fan, it was all nice and clean except the heat exchanger at the end of the thermal pipe was completely filled with dust bunnies - more like polar fleece!
Ended up taking the assembly down the road to a workshop that had an airline and 1 long blast produced a huge dustcloud and a sparkling clean heatsink.

He said it was damaging the polish on his table.
The whole heatsink assembly must've been 80C or more, it would shut down after an hour or so depending on the weather. Taking the bottom off must've increased the airflow just enough to prevent destruction.

((*eep)) nobody is here...
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.
