Makes sense, for queue generation purposes.

Few seconds on GPU is cool, but its more reasonable to feed the GPU something more complex, like an hour plus task!

Well, for the non-optimized applications, I was seeing run times up to and over an hour. So, by that definition, the GPU is a reasonable thing to use on those tasks. Though I will grant you that it would be nice to have the GPU running full time.

The good news is that we now have several projects with GPU applications live or soon to be released.

Einstein
GPU Grid
Milky Way
SaH (and SaH Beta)
The Lattice Project

It remains to be seen what this all means ...

What about Folding@home. Is that BOINC?

Add Artificial Intelligence (AIS) to that list. They've stated for a while they're building an ATI GPU app, but MW came along first.

I believe it was at first, but it definitely isn't anymore.

I believe it was at first, but it definitely isn't anymore.

Folding@Home was never BOINC. It has always been a separate framework. I do not recall the exact start date, but memory says that it was started before BOINC as another competing DC framework. Like the IBM sponsored framework (UD) that was later migrated to BOINC when UD got snarky with the license terms ...

Hmm, I will have to add AI to my list, I had not seen that note (though I will also admit I have not been on their boards for like forever...)

As these things go, I tend to believe in them when I can put my hand on the application ... till then it is all vaporware ... I have 4 Nvidia cards and one ATi because that makes sense in that the CUDA applications are more ready for prime time and work better and are recognized by BOINC Manager.

As things shift around in the next months and years I will likely move one way then the other ...

Not sure about that. I need to get one first and see how much better it performs than say a GTX 295 card. I mean, I agree if it is a stellar performer then it would make sense to get a few over time. The advantage of course is that though a steep investment, they will last for years ...

I did system rotations years ago where I had 8-9 systems live and I replaced one about once a quarter to six months so that a system had at least two years here before it was termed out. But, Some of those systems are now 10 years old and still around (loaned out to other people), and are only now becoming obsolete as far as performance goes.

For those tracking the minutia of GPU migrations. Here is my suggested reading list of "announcements" as to what cards and APIs are being considered by which projects ... these are the most authoritative statements I could find, as in, I looked for those that are made by Project personnel and not hangers-on like me ...

Released applications are tagged as {Alpha} or {Beta} based on *MY* appreciation of where I think they are in terms of usability and stability. Projected releases are tagged with a "?" as up to this moment vaporware is always impressive.

Artificial Intelligence (ATI?)
Einstein@Home (OpenCL?, CUDA?)
GPU Grid (CUDA {Beta}, OpenCL?)
Milky Way (OpenCL)
Milky Way (CUDA) (ATI {alpha}, OpenCL?, CUDA?)
SETI@Home (CUDA {beta})
The Lattice Project (OpenCL?, CUDA?)

If someone is aware of some other note I did not find ... well, lets add them and consider a new thread with the best rumors ...

Other than the fact that I hate SETI@Home?

There is no real official statement of their direction that I am aware of ...

The developers that do the optimization coding for SaH have said that they may look at doing a version for the ATI cards but are, to the best of my recollection, focused on other issues at the moment. In that I have not done work for that project in about 2 months and am not paying them much attention in any event ... well, it all conspires to me not knowing what is going on there ...

Yes, I am sure that I am about the only one that feels this way ... if you look at participation rates you would think that SaH is doing something that is actually important... but I just cannot see it ...

Oh my, it's because you are looking. You have to listen to aliens - and only with a computer. It's the only way... But you can always turn radio waves of static into a screensaver if it helps.

Wrong ;) there are more people who start hating it or only started seti because friends kept asking to help a bit.
Don't get me wrong i was in a team which did get into the top with the old seti but suddenly we all felt its going to what ..... ?! or what for ?!?

Oh, errr, take care. You'll be putting some academics out of a job. Abandon expensive computers - cheap headphones are just as good for listening to static....

Meanwhile, at MilkyWay headquarters, we don't only use graphic cards just to look at graphic. Oh no, we also use them to further the cause of real science. With a little help from Cluster Physik and his fine team mates ;)
