How do I use the Select Computer.... option in the Advanced tab of the BOINC client and is this the easiest way in which to access another client?

I presume your using a router with DHP, so try widening the acceptable remote host ip's in the "remote_host.cfg" file.
i.e.
196.161.0.2
196.161.0.3
196.161.0.4
196.161.0.5

You may also need to check your firewall settings.

I've done a full range from
xxx.xxx.x.1 to
xxx.xxx.x.9

still nothing, entered the Host's name, checked firewall and all Boinc apps are allowed.
Am using Boinc view to 'see' other machine and am able to do so without problem!

If you using the same host id and password as for boincview, you should be able to connect via boinc manager.

I seem to remember reading something about problems with using older versions of boinc manager and remote connections with the newer clients.

As for Boincview, i'm using 'direct file access', so does'nt appear to req. password - well, it never asked for one, as for BOINC manager both machines running ver. 6.4.7

On the remote machine, do you see "unauthorised access by machine x.x.x.x" type messages?

All that is needed is -
The remote_hosts.cfg file on the remote/viewed machine to contain the IP of the local/viewing machine, stop & start boinc

I receive no error messages on remote machine,
remote_hosts.cfg contains ip addresses 1 - 9
Boinc stopped and started,

am able however to ping remote machine?

Well, don't know what happened but am now able to do exactly what I intended to do, must have missed something out along the way!

At one point I thought it may be a Vista XP issue.

Happy now, thanks RS_

WHen you make the changes you have to stop and restart BOINC on both ends of the connections.
