Perhaps this is a idea to stop complaining. if the project runs only a few hours per day, it would be possible to feed all peoples needs during this time. I don't know if it is possible to produce that many WUs on stockpile but if, it would solve a lot of problems. It would reduce traffic as during off-time it should be possible to stop a lot of traffic before it even reaches MW. Perhaps it's possible to do some more WUs with the same traffic as now. It would stop complaining as WU distribution is fair again. during on-times everyone will get as much as he can crunch. It'll show the real potential of what Milkyway users can do at the moment, some interesting numbers i think. The only negative issue i see is that the slow machines are favored again as they get enough work to do nearly the whole day while the fast one can only crunch a few seconds after the project turned off. But this could probably handled by a general setting the max cache to 1h, so slow machines will only get 1 WU each time and still benefit from this. I don't think it makes any difference for the project, but perhaps the peoples problems will go away. |

<snip> Problems. What problems? |

I propose a 4 day week. Or maybe a one day week. All those with problems can only ask for work on a Monday. Those with a problem can only ask for work on a Friday. No-one can work when work is unavailable, even if they have a slow machine with 10 days worth of cache. No work can be done at the week end, or when their ATI drivers don't work. Scripts to get work on a Wednesday will be outlawed, as well as scripts that thrash the MilkyWay server to death. |

I think we should REWIND all Wu's b4 returning them! |

The chance of getting people to work together with that kind of cooperative spirit is nil, zip, zilch, nada, zippo... Make sure to read the project's front page today though. They are talking about having the GPU side operational soon... |

I agree Brian, with the Ungodly Amount of Credit they give out here some of these Guys would sell their only Son if it meant getting more WU's for themselves ... :) |

I already only run mw a few hours every day or two. All but once I was able to get wu's in a handful of tries. Then again I'm only getting 6 to 12 wu/day, not thousands. Once the gpu portion is working, it should eleviate a lot of the 'no work' issue for cpu's and gpu's hopefully if not eliminate it. Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |

Sorry this has been taking so long (but labstaff has been a bit slow working with us here). We should have a separate GPU page working today (I hope). So in the next week or so things should be a bit better in terms of work availability. |

Scripts to get work on a Wednesday will be outlawed, as well as scripts that thrash the MilkyWay server to death. A four-day week is okay. Then people get issued with a special three-day workunit that stops BOINC running any more MW for 72 hours. Of course to make people do this there'd have to be a credit incentive, I suggest a bonus of 15% above their previous four days' RAC. And there would have to be a a penalty of at least 20% if someone tries to run a script to fetch more bonus-units, and an even bigger penalty if users are claiming GPU hours but are actually using the time to play Warcraft, etc. |

Why don't we just run Milkyway on every other Tuesday during Even # Month's on Odd # Years, that way we would all have an Actual Life 353 Days out of the Year during Odd # Years & have an Astounding 365 days of a Real Life during Even # Years instead of worrying so much about getting WU's from Milkyway 365 Days a Year ... ;) |

Yeah, it's both irritating and comical at the same time watching all the "ME FIRST" attitudes... The situation really isn't "life or death", so many (most?) people won't really give a second thought about trying to work together. |

I say that as I just started a batch of 960 simulations on my own work... |

I don’t know Phil. I see BOINC as a 'hobby' and wouldn't spend more on it than I would on the odd computer game/other software now and then. I also see BOINC as projects which ask you to do voluntary work, but I wouldn’t ask them to change their project just to suit how I crunch or how big/many WUs I want at any time. The only entitlements that matter are that I am entitled to ask for work and the project is entitled to give it to me, or not. |

I thought Boinc'ing was for a bit of fun, and helping various science projects move forward. Silly SATAN Mars rules this confectionery war! |

I think i was misunderstood, i didn't mean the users should run the project a few hours per day. The project itself should shutdown for a few hours everyday so there is no need for users working together, that exactly was my point. If the project is down no one complains about it. You can see it every tuesday over at seti: no one gets work, no one complains. Simply disable the scheduler and forums, stats and so on will work but no WU distribution. But if GPUMW will get online there's no need for any temporary solutions anymore |
