I think i was misunderstood, i didn't mean the users should run the project a few hours per day. The project itself should shutdown for a few hours everyday so there is no need for users working together, that exactly was my point. If the project is down no one complains about it. You can see it every tuesday over at seti: no one gets work, no one complains.

Simply disable the scheduler and forums, stats and so on will work but no WU distribution.

But if GPUMW will get online there's no need for any temporary solutions anymore

True, but at SETI you can queue up 10 days worth of WUs. So chances are you have work in that period. If I burn through 6 WUs on a single core with a 4850 in 3 minutes, then I'd be idle. Even with an i7, 48 WUs = 24 minutes worth.

Wouldn't do any good for the science that goes on, would it?

If they shut it down for three hours, even during the current problems, one of my 4850s normally goes through about 2500 credits worth of WUs that the project wouldn't get crunched because the project was offline.

In order to pick up the pace and keep output of the project at 14.3m creds/day, they'd have to speed up work generation. Which if you remember is what brought down the project last week, and why instead of 21m creds/day, the project is only doing 14.3m. They had to turn down the work generator to stop it all from crashing.

<< That last paragraph is the most important one...!

Of course it would get the work done. Actually MW gets actually 14,000,000 Credits per day, i think this could be done in less than 12 hours easily by the current users. Now my idea was to produce WUs 12 hours long without giving them out and then start distribution for the other 12 hours.

so people will get 12 hours full of work and all the work the project has available will be done.

Numbers have to be adjusted of course.

Where did you get that information? couldn't it be that they put down output because there were complains about traffic or the server got hurt seriously due to the crash so it can't produce more WUs actually

BOINCstats.com:

Given full pelt, the current users could probably churn out 50m/day easy. But the server is only producing 14.3m credits worth per day (or 14.3e6 / 23 creds per WU average = 620k WUs/day, or 7.2WUs/second) so that it doesnt crash.

If the program worked for longer (as it will do), the server could still produce 7 WUs per second and be happy and not crash.

The correct way to state that is that "no one complains, until the forums are back up and running again"...

In any case, shutting everything but the generator and feeder down and building up a work queue was done in the past over at SETI. What it seems like would happen here is you might get a couple hours of systems getting tasks, then back to where we are now. Of course, since new work is based upon old work, I don't know if it would even be that productive, since there'd come a point where releasing tasks and getting some back would be required...

I dont understand where you have your conclusion from, that the server crashed due to the output? I can't see any indication for this. The server worked perfectly for more than two weeks at this output rate.

And i can't see even less what this has to do with my idea, it is completely free of any relation to the output rate. The servers output will be absolutely constant with my idea - to be exact: this is the idea. the only thing that changes is the distribution. Taken your numbers into account there will be only 7 hours needed to do the complete output of one day of the server actually.

And the idea is that it would decrease server accesses as every access is successful while distribution is on and access could be completeley denied while distribution is off and that could even lead to some more free server resources or/and bandwith.

  • I am entitled to a fair days' credit for a fair days' work
  • I invested substantially in kit to advance science
  • I am entitled to see all my rigs are fully fed with work
  • Button-mashers, script-kiddies and credit-whores are trying to stop me and sabotage the project.

I don’t know Phil. I see BOINC as a 'hobby' and wouldn't spend more on it than I would on the odd computer game/other software now and then.

Some have personal reasons, though.

The first crash was supposidly the staff deleting the whole mw project. The second didn't have an explaniation(that I recall). I wouldn't be suprised if it was the same reason, or too much demand was put on the server. The lesser output would make sense if some restriction was put on the project so it didn't use as much bandwidth.
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.

I know that this isn't seti. I think it's better to have a defined downtime than the feeling to not get any work because someone else got(stole) it.

What it seems like would happen here is you might get a couple hours of systems getting tasks, then back to where we are now.

you might be right at this point, i don't know, but as the actual deadline is 3 days it should easily work 1 day

Thank you guys. I'm sure my new HD4850 will help take up the slack :)

I forgot to say that the real reason I'm stopping GPU crunching for MW is that my 4850 died. I've now gone back to my pre-MW GPU days and have re-instated my 9600 for GPUGRID...and MW on my cpu.

It was probably the hot and cold caused by having work, then not having work, then having work again after it got cold. If only it had been kept hot the whole time........... ;-)

It just stopped at about 3am 2 mornings ago. You could be right there Brian as there was a cache full of wu's when it went.

What's very interesting is that since MW has been back on the CPU only I don't think it has run out of MW work yet.....

I expect the demoid pounding it gave to the server was just too much. I'd take care not to do the same with your CPU.
