Cosmo's been a write-off for the last month or so,since their server crashed.
If you let criticize them they delete your post so I gave up on them.

Well since there is only one active mod there we know who gets the shakes.

I wasted some time with Predictor - now talk about a bad BOINC citizen.

Are you refering to the mass deletion of accounts or the fact that Scripps sold the data generated by the project (via its users) to a pharmaceutical company?

Well, that's the bad stuff (though selling the data might not be bad if the funds were plowed back into productive research). There is also the total lack of status information on the project for the past two years. If a project is going offline -- for gosh sake, ANNOUNCE what is going on. Climate BBC went offline with lots of notice and explanation -- very out front about it. Other projects go into some 'sleep' mode for various reasons (Malaria from December 08 to early this month) but at least there is some information exchange. Predictor is a project that gives the BOINC concept a very bad odor.

Is anybody here getting ANY work? I haven't been able to get a single WU since early last night..

Dang GPU folders taking all the WU's..the people behind the scenes shouldn't be allowing GPU folders to jam the servers like is happening..

Are GPU folders that are crunching this data even suppose to be? I thought these WU's were for CPU folders?

I thought the project was here for the science. However the work is done, what matters is that it is done.

You are quite right Debs. Volunteer computing platforms is a valuable asset to scientific researchers. We're better than an IBM BlueGene/L supercomputer ;)

Or we would be if we got some WUs... :)

LOL.. chill, mate!

Something to consider: a 4870 at 30s/WU and ~100W needs 3kJ to crunch a WU. My Phenom 9850 with optimized app needs about 20mins/WU. At ~100W that's 120kJ, fourty times as much energy. Do you still think it's a good idea to run Mw on CPUs?

That's an interesting calculation ExtraTerrestrial Apes. I made my own calculation when ATIs were first able to crunch on MilkyWay. It went something like this; "If I get an ATI card and put it in one computer, I could turn all my other computers off and save a stack on electricity, and get more credits than all those computers were getting in total."

I saved so much I was able to go on a cruise :P

Seems to less mathematics involved in this calculation!

Encourage the project to throw out everyone except people that have GPUs and only have a single project... that's your agenda, right?

Even if the numbers of Mr. Spadge are a bit flawed (a quad will complete 4 WUs in that time and most quadcores consume a bit less than a HD4870 meaning the advantage is not 40x but only a factor of 8 or so), it is very true that GPUs are far more economical to use. One simply wastes energy with a CPU here.
Frankly, CPUs can be put to a better use at other projects, where GPUs can't help. Really.

While a quad can do 4 tasks, a 4870 can do 8 at once.
Just nitpicking we still agree that the GPU can do far more crunching than a CPU with the current work unit structure.

Shouldn't it be about energy consumed per credit? If so, then I get more credit here on my CPU than I do at any other project, therefore the energy consumed per credit is less here than it is at any other project.

The GPU is an order of magnitude better than the CPU, but per project the CPU is best here for kJ/credit.

Live long and BOINC.

So exactly how many Stream Processors does it take to process a workunit?

See, that's what rubs me the wrong way about "GPU guys", as claimed by other people. This is the same schtick that came out of the other threads. Toss the people with CPUs out so there's more work units for those of us "in the club"...

That kind of attitude just isn't happening in reverse. The project offered a totally new project for GPUs. There is a segment of GPU users who seem to accept the project's idea of having GPUs do NEW WORK that is more sensitive that could not be done by CPUs in sufficient time, but there is another segment that doesn't like the perception that they have to start over with their stats.

As I said some time ago, this isn't about "science". The project has made the determination that both tasks are worthwhile ventures. It is time the "GPU guys" accept that...

That would be pleasant... It would be great to be talking about how good it is that people with GPUs are going to have the opportunity to do more cutting-edge work that might further scientific knowledge along...instead of some people trying to figure out who gets tossed out of doing MW work completely...

LOL

I'm just waiting to see what the next ongoing argument will be about, and whether it is here or on some other projects fora :)

I don't care how the work is ultimately organised here, I just want to prove that I am better than someone else (I won't know who until it is proved though, so I just gotta keep trying :) )

It is time the "GPU guys" accept that...

What are "GPU guys" then?

Are they those with computers that all have one or more GPUs in them? Or those that have at least one GPU, but also computers that do not have GPUs, with CPUs that crunch MW or not? Or those that will only cruch with a GPU as opposed to those that will also crunch with CPUs ?

I'm having a little bit of an identity crisis and need to know whether I am 'us' or 'them', and who knows which is which and who is who.

"And after all were only ordinary men."
