Something to consider: a 4870 at 30s/WU and ~100W needs 3kJ to crunch a WU. My Phenom 9850 with optimized app needs about 20mins/WU. At ~100W that's 120kJ, fourty times as much energy. Do you still think it's a good idea to run Mw on CPUs?

MrS

Encourage the project to throw out everyone except people that have GPUs and only have a single project... that's your agenda, right?

Even if the numbers of Mr. Spadge are a bit flawed (a quad will complete 4 WUs in that time and most quadcores consume a bit less than a HD4870 meaning the advantage is not 40x but only a factor of 8 or so), it is very true that GPUs are far more economical to use. One simply wastes energy with a CPU here.
Frankly, CPUs can be put to a better use at other projects, where GPUs can't help. Really.

See, that's what rubs me the wrong way about "GPU guys", as claimed by other people. This is the same schtick that came out of the other threads. Toss the people with CPUs out so there's more work units for those of us "in the club"...

That kind of attitude just isn't happening in reverse. The project offered a totally new project for GPUs. There is a segment of GPU users who seem to accept the project's idea of having GPUs do NEW WORK that is more sensitive that could not be done by CPUs in sufficient time, but there is another segment that doesn't like the perception that they have to start over with their stats.

As I said some time ago, this isn't about "science". The project has made the determination that both tasks are worthwhile ventures. It is time the "GPU guys" accept that...

Edit: Nevermind, not getting into this

I'm having a little bit of an identity crisis and need to know whether I am 'us' or 'them', and who knows which is which and who is who.

I don't care how the work is ultimately organised here, I just want to prove that I am better than someone else (I won't know who until it is proved though, so I just gotta keep trying :) )

Now I am ashamed I went out an bought a GPU ... sniff ... sniff ... though I suppose if I wanted more work on the GPU system I have I should have stopped running MW on all my CPU systems as and when I could get work ...

Only in the sense, for my part, that I felt that the project might have been better served to go the route of an integrated project with separate CPU and GPU applications and work ... like SaH with the AP and MB stuff ...

As I said some time ago, this isn't about "science". The project has made the determination that both tasks are worthwhile ventures. It is time the "GPU guys" accept that...

Science ... we are doing science? Ugh! All this time I thought we were only here for the Milky Way candy bars and Cobblestones ...

Now that I know we are doing science ... I will have to rethink my commitment to this whole project ... besides, they haven't sent me my candy bars ...

Where to start. I detached 3 CPUs from MW to crunch (the Almighty forbid) Cosno@home. I swore 3 times in the past I'd never go back, but....

Anyway, about doing science versus credits...

Number of times we've contacted ET and vice versa thru this science...0 (TMK)
Number of cancers cured from this science...0
Amount of clean energy conversion from fossil fuels from this science...0
Amount of clean water developed from this science...0
Warp engines developed from this science (Zephren Cochran)...0
Number of wars prevented from this science...0
Number of white papers published...?????
Number of grant requests for these projects...hundreds
Number of arguments created from this science...thousands
Amount of money spent to be a credit whore...tens of thousands

I guess I might as well be walkin' on the moon!

I redirected the candy bars to ME.

I suspect the next time I feel plush enough to allocate funds for computer fun, I'll look into getting one or two 48xx cards to deploy. But the GPU applications are pretty new (and the ATI GPU BOINC projects are pretty rare). I've joined the Milkyway GPU project -- I have a couple of systems with 9400GT cards -- just to get a sense of what the deal is. This past year, in a 'non-GPU world' - I've done upgrades of existing X2 AMD systems to Phenom quad systems -- in many cases for the cost of adding a 48xx card - which would increase power requirements on a given system, I've been moving from X2 5000 systems to Phenom BE 9600, 9850 and one Phenom 940.

Science ... we are doing science? Ugh! All this time I thought we were only here for the Milky Way candy bars and Cobblestones ...

Now that I know we are doing science ... I will have to rethink my commitment to this whole project ... besides, they haven't sent me my candy bars ...

Where's that project? I want to crunch for that. Does it use ATI or nVidia?

O.K. It was just a guess. I was under the impression that if someone asked for and received money, they would eventually publish!! I've modified the guesstimate.

Number of white papers published...?????

Need to add ....

Number of Droughts prevented...0
Famines prevented...0

While I understand the "fun" you're having, historically research of any sort does not produce results in a short time span. Consider how long it took, and how many millions of lives lost, to develop potent antibiotics to combat Black Death. How many years did it take to produce the vaccine for Polio? How many people before Orville and Wilbur Wright died trying to create airplanes? How long was the Earth considered flat and / or the center of the universe?

Etc, etc, etc...

The moon? It doesn't exist. A fabricated idea by Hollywood for their best seller "One small step for Man on the Moon". Didn't you know? ;)
