Even so, it is an uninformed opinion. MilkyWay_GPU isn't ready yet, as everyone should be aware. Milkyway_GPU will have very different WUs from this project, and will be GPU only due to their size. It might be possible to send out WUs for CUDA capable graphics cards on this project, but as ATI cards have no official support, this split is necessary for them to get the right units.

So your calling me uninformed and stating the Everyone should be aware of the non-start of a semi-project!

Wind your neck in.

Message 24194 - Posted: 4 Jun 2009, 20:56:29 UTC - in response to Message 24164.

Today I signed up to the MilkyWay_GPU Project.

I entered the Project URL as suggested,
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway_gpu/

Who suggested that you do that?

No one invited you to try and sign up for the project, its not being promoted or available through the BOINC client.

So basically you are saying you signed your computer up for a boinc project you knew nothing about, that could have done anything to your computer or gfx card, and then you came in and complained about it in a huge thread that if you had read it would have explained the situation to you.

Then some people point out your error and you start getting all defensive. Pretty funny stuff.

Message 24198 - Posted: 4 Jun 2009, 21:10:18 UTC - in response to Message 24193.

The choice to run GPU as a distinct project was deliberate, as opposed to running as a sub project (SAH/AP, EAH/ABPS, Rosetta, etc.).

It was suggested back when the subject first came up they could run as a sub project, but I guess they decided they wanted the added isolation of having separate projects.

However, they aren't the first to do this either (SAH Beta, RALPH, the couple of different flavors of CPDN, etc.).

Then again you do have valid point. There ought to be at least a home page news message stating, "It's not soup yet!". ;-)

There is an item on the MW_GPU project home page that says "Almost There, we're working as fast as we can", but you (or at least I) have to scroll down to see it.

Message 24202 - Posted: 4 Jun 2009, 21:46:28 UTC - in response to Message 24198.

The home page suggests that people use the link I used to add the project in the Boinc Client.

The point poeple seem to be missing here is that there actually is a GPU home page!

It suggests people sign up and it even gives people the link to the non-active project.

I posted the errors so that the author could have a look at the HTML and fix it!

I also wanted people to know that the project is not yet live yet,

This was not an open invitation for smart mouths to stick their necks out and lip off.

Message 24215 - Posted: 4 Jun 2009, 23:55:36 UTC - in response to Message 24202.

Although already registered with the MilkyWay project I had to re-register - I would have preferred not to do this. I would have liked the project to respect existing users in the same way other projects do.

It was this bit I was taking offense to. You can complain about the time it's taking for the GPU project to start up all you want, but don't just assume that the staff are trying to make your life difficult. There are valid reasons for the split between projects as I explained.

The rest of your post would have been unnecessary had you simply read the news on either project's main page, but that's an honest mistake - I wasn't calling you out on that.

So I will - the Almost There! message is almost 2 months old now. :)
Cheers,

Here is another project that you can sign up for :)

Vanderbilt BOINC

I am sure there are more if you look hard enough. :)

I am just having some fun is all.

Point is, that just because there is a web page that is up and running, does not mean that there is a back-end that is running.

and this comment here

Was a bit off, as the GPU project is a new project, different database, different URL, so of course you will have to register again.

Maybe next time you can link to a living project.
That one has not been updated in over a year.

Maybe next time you can read the entire post.

That was the point I was trying to make.

The Milkyway home page doesn't suggest that people use the GPU home page link, the only page that does that is the work in progress home page of the gpu project. So where did you find the link that tells you to sign up for the not-ready-yet gpu project?

Yes there is a home page, but to find it you would have at least had to browse a thread that indicates just through casual browsing that the gpu sites not ready. And yet you post into a thread where lots of people already know about the status of the project in the hope of alerting those people who already know (assuming they have had the common sense to read the thread, or any number of threads saying that already)

Riiiight.. good one.. thanks for letting us know. kthanksbye.. :)

Oh and this is a public forum, you don't have to invite people to respond its the nature of the beast, if you don't like that sort of thing, or have a overly thin skin, I suggest you stick to email :)
