Hey folks, Since there was a lot of spam going around I made the forums able to be posted on when you have a total credit greater than or equal to 50. You can make or edit a profile when you have a RAC of 50 or greater. Dave Przybylo MilkyWay@home Developer Department of Computer Science Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute |

Hey folks, It's probably because he's the admin. Thanks Dave, should be appreciated. I haven't seen any spam, but presumably that's because you've been moderating it faster than I've been reading it. :) |

Dave's credit, not RAC, is greater than 50 so he is not breaking the restrictions. The spam must have been intercepted quickly, but taken much of your time, Dave. Thanks for the notification. Go away, I was asleep |

Most of us know the reasons why this had to be done.... Thanks Dave. Don't drink water, that's the stuff that rusts pipes |

This makes a lot of sense, and thanks for it. However, I do have one comment: If someone joins the project and has difficulties setting up Milkyway, they won't be able to post any questions they have. Would it be worth having a stickied new user thread, so that anyone with problems setting up the project can post there and there only? In that way, they could either be given help directly or pointers to existing threads which answer their questions. Of course, this thread would then be open to spam, but it would be one thread only, and presumably easier to monitor for anti-spam purposes that all the boards. |

How can somebody have >50 RAC if server says 99.9% of the time GOT 0 NEW TASKS !!!! My RAC fell down during those few days under 1000, in 3 weeks it will be close to 0. What about new people without luck of getting any work? "total credit greater than or equal to 50" As found in first message in this thread. |

Like many others here who have complained about the 50 RAC, I am one. I have been a member here for quite some time and I'm upset with that restriction. Milky Way has too many problems with their project to maintain a 50 RAC. I do not run high end multiple computers, I have ONE. I need to edit my profile. You need to figure out a better program to weed out the spam instead of limiting it to a 50 RAC. Set it for a total credit instead. Say 10K or so. Will server the same purpose! Sorceress |

OK Sorceress, sounds like this should be looked into :-) |

Dave! Whaa? I here present my total credits and RAC for the three projects I've been crunching for: Milkyway 19,578 15.25 Cosmology 12,180 85.71 Einstein 9,069 44.15 While I can't contribute a lot because of my computer's age, I am crunching for science. That's what we give you. What you give us in return are credits. You get what you want, I get what I don't care about. And now you're placing restrictions on me? It makes me feel like you don't want my contribution. |

I see many of the projects using the 'ReCaptcha' prgam that requires you to match two words or number before you can edit you profile. It keeps the spammers from posting their crap. Thats its purpose. Einstein and Cosmology are two that come to mind right now. Use it instead of restricting your users. Besides, I've never had a 50 RAC here. Half of my projects RAC are below that as it is. I have ONE old computer! Sheesh! |

And especially when someone has troubes running Milky the RAC will never rise... *oops* ;-))) I think the re-captcha is a good solution because it works also for beginners/part time crunchers. As long as this is not installed the posting restrictions should be lowered dramatically IMHO. (A RAC greater than 1.1 or so must be enough...) Lovely greetings, Cori |

tbh, a post restriction based on total credit isn't a biggie, but based on RAC, meh. SETI does that now (though even to post), and it was actually a source of some consternation and problems for our team. The thing is, someone, somehow, got ownership over our SETI team (I thought someone would have to pass it? or don't know the exact details, but there was a thread on our forums for it). The person was not in our team. People weren't happy and wanted that matter changed. So, along the way, one of the mods to the team boards was like "hmm, my 100,000 credit with SETI doesn't seem to be enough to allow me to post; can someone go to their forums so we can inform them our team has been stolen on their project, and we want it back?" It finally got resolved, but the person most familiar with the matter was unable to post, and so going round about middle man was the start of oh dear, how to fix this for our members, sorta thing. For myself (and looking at how SETI implemented that one), it suggests that a person who was a long time cruncher for them (my account goes back to like 2000), that OK not so much credit in the present, but it was a lot around 3-5 years ago; loses the ability to post because they're essentially trying to "convince us" to not crunch other projects instead of them, or to crunch others less... I can half chuckle as I say that; though if there was some thinking to that, rather then having total credit as the deciding factor, it might not exactly make for the best PR. Main reason is, it is volunteer time. |

I disagree. There have been a lot of spammers who crunch a few WU's to get some credits, stop crunching and then spam the forums. We had a flurry of it here and at Seti's forums as well. We are in process of trying to work a way around this issue but for now the Posting RAC restriction will be staying in place. |

I disagree. Oh good grief, Blurf. We don't need to hear this. The fix is easy. Get the ReCaptcha program and put it in place. It stops the spam problem (if there IS one?) and keeps everybody happy. Don't sweep this under the rug. Fix it please!!!!! TIA |

I disagree. Sorceress--I didn't say we were going to "sweep this under the rug". We are focussing on stabilizing the project right now. It is on our list and is being discussed. |

This sounded as if that was your intentions. The fix is easy and installing recaptcha can't be that hard I would think. Please take care of this ASAP. BTW Can you make the requirements for CUDA a little easier. I can only do the 1.1 CUDA. The 2.3 is out of my parameters. Thank you :) |
