Travis has stated that they intend on not having the GPU apps get credit here once they are up and running over there... In other words, you're stating that you're going to blatantly go against the wishes of the project? |

In the same line, I am not a fan of the scriptors who in the pursuit of their own ego run scripts to pound on the server, when the main problem is server load ... in that light I am sure that there are going to be those that work diligently to fuel their own egos at the expense of the project's welfare and health. I concur with you view Paul. I run an HD3850 that has naff all credit and naff all work, mainly because I don't run scripts. Those that want to can do so, I choose not to. Credits isn't everything.... Don't drink water, that's the stuff that rusts pipes |

It's good to hear that there is some future ATI card support. For now, I have now completely done with MW CPU cruching for reasons of efficiency, saving on electric bills, and not wanting to start up those air conditioning units as summer approaches. I for one look forward to some decent credit returns from fewer PCs with GPU cards and not being driven to distraction by the heat pumped out by all those CPU crunching PCs on a hot summer day. |

Assuming that ATI GPU support is in pace over at Milkyway_GPU, and that subsequent to that some filtering mechanism is put in place over here to make it CPU specific, then I would think that 'scriptors' would no longer have a work unit grabbing advantage -- that is, a script would no longer be required to keep workflow for a CPU processing workstation. In other words, in terms of work availability here, we'd return to the 'pre-GPU' environment. Now, of course that is supposition on my part (perhaps too optimistic). In the current environment, folks with ATI GPU's here either script or starve - I'd guess that most of the folks running 48xx cards here are running scripts -- could be wrong though. I don't have any 38xx or 48xx cards. I do have some 96xx and 98xx Cuda cards -- they are living off of GPUGrid for now. I do have workstations with embedded 3200 and 3300 ATI chips -- if down the road, MilkyWay_GPU can work with those, I'll be headed over there.

Actually I shuffled cards about because the ATI card could not keep in work and banging on the servers where there are already problems is not the way to move a project forward. Yes I loved the earnings, yes I loved the science even more ... but, you don't act counter to the best interests of project you love ... So, I mothballed the ATI GPU and got a few more Nvidia cards pointed towards GPU Grid... if and when ATI cards are supported I might try it again... till then ... 100K at GPU Grid .. :) Debating to get a 285 card on sale at $60 off ... that would let me shelve the 9800GT ... kinda slow anyway ... |

Yes, that's one way of putting it. Take the money from lower elecricity bills and at the same time contribute an enormous amount to MilkyWay by running its WUs with super efficient ATI GPUs. |

In other words, you're stating that you're going to blatantly go against the wishes of the project? Of course not, i simply wanted to know if you believe me if i tell complete nonsense, as you ignore every halfway reasonably argument. I will go with MWgpu because of fewer babysitting, what i stated earlier, even if it would give a little less credit, what will not happen, as travis stated. Looks like you ignore him too if it doesn't feed your paranoia - he said always credit will be the same and you were always arguing less credit this and less credit that ... You tell things will be lightened up and if taken you by word lightened up things will make the situation worse - that is not conceptual thinking |

I still suspect that the current *active* 48xx folks here (or rather most of them) are running scripts. Your approach was to 'deactive' yourself regarding ATI cards here - a reasonable approach. Regarding retiring the 9800GT -- that does about 10K credits a day over in GPUGrid, the same card running over on SETI would get about 10% of that.... I have one 9800GT and one 9600GT running for GPU Grid completing about 2 and 1 workunit a day. I also have a pair of older 9400GT cards on systems -- they actually can complete one work unit every 4 or 5 days. In a month or so I hope to do a bit of card upgrading -- perhaps one or two budget 9800GT's and food chaining the 9600GT to a system with a 9400GT and retiring the 9400GT cards -- they can go to clients who are looking to get a bump up from older 7xxx cards.

So, I mothballed the ATI GPU and got a few more Nvidia cards Most of us are not able to buy for every project a vc, simply because there are more important things in life then boinc. Second i just want to buy energy saving cards and not the electric slurping models like the nvidia 2xx cards or the 4870 or 4890 cards I allways try to find a vc which does perform well but does not use more then 100 watts when pushed to his limits. Why you ask because i care about our planet to save on the powerconsumption from my machines. Ofcourse some people would say turn it of would help more, but i think this way of helping science does help the planet Even though we use a little electricity Why do i think that is better then turning it off, simple if we would not help those studies would be done by huge supercomputers build in very expenssive, highly cooled datacenters which eat away prolly more then we do together. The only plus would be that we don't have to pay the bills direct, but prolly by paying extra taxes and more school/university money. Its new, its relative fast... my new bicycle |

In other words, you're stating that you're going to blatantly go against the wishes of the project? I said that the problem with less credit could happen in the short term and by accident. Despite best intentions and promises, sometimes accidents do happen. As Paul Buck has said, most likely someone will put effort into attempting to circumvent any block put in place to download work from here... Finally, your English is fairly decent, but it is broken enough to where I can tell you don't fully understand me and/or are not fluent in the language. If you have something additional to say, if you are more comfortable posting it in German, I can get someone to translate it. You might also consider getting someone you know who is more fluent in English to translate my posts into German. |

I said that the problem with less credit could happen in the short term and by accident. Despite best intentions and promises, sometimes accidents do happen. And i have to ask again where is your problem then? And where does it fit all your arguments if all is by accident. As Paul Buck has said, most likely someone will put effort into attempting to circumvent any block put in place to download work from here...that would only make sense when credit will be different. For equal credit the non-gpu MW will have much more overhead because of the small WUs so less work can be done and less credit earned. And if less credit happens by accident it will be fixed and no one would like to get WUs from here because it would be stupid for different if not all reasons. I agree to your first sentence, but that has nothing to do with the bad guys, worst case scenarios you are arguing elsewhere in this thread/board/forum. Things go wrong and if they go wrong they have to be fixed - nothing to worry about. And to keep it with Murphy again. Fools are genius, regardless of how much time and energy you spend to make something foolproof, there will be one who invents a way to break it anyway. Will mean for MW that it is unforseeable what will happen especially how people will react and therefore it doesn't make sense to speculate about it and even less sense to do things based on those speculations. |

How's the weather in Germany, Holger? It's been warm here for the past week and there's a lot of pollen. Unfotunately I have to go cut the grass now. Maybe eventually I can save enough money to afford an ATI card, but a new lawnmower would probably be better... |

So, I mothballed the ATI GPU and got a few more Nvidia cards Yes, I know... which I why I use the phrase "more money than brains"... Any you are right, for most people there is more to life than BOINC... and that is why I never look down on anyone's choices in this regard. Some cannot afford to buy faster computers or up to date video cards and this is fine. One of the nice things about BOINC is that there are now lots of choices to be had. In projects, in how you support them, etc. I am just glad that you, and everyone else is here ... hopefully having fun ... |

Don't worry if boincing starts to become a nuisance or too much annoying, there is a huge bleu button on the right top side of this huge machine ;) Its new, its relative fast... my new bicycle |
