Message 23844 - Posted: 1 Jun 2009, 14:00:23 UTC - in response to Message 23828.

Well, it's been about a day now and my modest RAC (from my little ol' laptop) has increased 40% - from 323 to 454. So the technique seems to be working. ;-)

One thing I've found is that my external optical mouse seems to have undetectable micro-jitter, I'm guessing from air currents caused by the laptop's cooling fan. I can't see it on the screen, but it seems to cause just enough error to make it very hard to keep the pointer tip on the sweet spot. I don't think a script would help to compensate. You just need to practice developing a very steady hand and a very sharp eye.

Hope this helps!!

Hmmm...

Well, I can tell you that it was somewhat easier/quicker getting working yesterday than what we've come to expect as typical, and I don't even use BOINC Manager. All my hosts run as a service/daemon, and I manage them with BoincView.

So I'm finding it kind of hard to believe that clicking in one place over another in an area (the button) which merely invokes a method in BM can have any real difference in how the project responds. Then in addition to that, it's not BM which send the request to the project, the CC does that.

I even went as far as to double check that the same message goes out the wire regardless of where you push on the button. Obviously, the specific request and work load/time/performance data which is included in the request changes each time, but there wasn't any kind of additional 'magic' element sent. ;-)

I just can't bring myself to accept that Druid ritualism or voodoo is having an effect here. What's next, human sacrifice? :-D

We could start with the top 10 participants by RAC.

That would certainly free up some WUs. ;)

Or better fitting, computer sacrifice. Draw random numbers and that computer gets nixed (or donated to me ;p).
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.

The humans go with the computers.

Well I read this thread carefully and contemplated all the methods deeply.

Four hours later I discover I've got a full cache of work for the first time in a week. What more can I say.

The same happened to me when I wanted to crunch for other projects and forgot to set MW to NNW: woosh! Downloaded a bunch of fresh Milky WUs! *LOL*
Lovely greetings, Cori

Exactly.
Sitting in the sun with a large pint, or quiet contemplation of otherwise sane people performing keyboard/mouse gymnastics, and along comes the work.

I get the most work when Phil's avatar is upside down, and some work when it's sideways. Right now he's blocking me.

I changed a server setting which will have the server only send WUs out to any specific host once a minute. Let me know if this fixes anything.

However, from everything I've tried, I think the original suggestion is still the most effective way to guarantee getting work.

Okay I'm sure we'll see if your mod reduces or enhances the other suggestions.

Youtube

All that was, was a person beating up on a defenseless video card ... nothing about selecting the correct god or goddesses to sacrifice to ...

Besides I did not say that I did not get a reply ... I just said that it did not work ...

There's the right way, the wrong way, and the Scarecrow way.

The Scarecrow way:

1) Open boingmgr

2) Fill a 2 quart pitcher with your favorite beer

3) Slurp aforementioned beer through a straw until pitcher is empty
( best effect achieved if you don't come up for air)

4) Sit firmly in computer chair and spin clockwise FOUR times

5) Check the tasks tab in boincmgr

6) You might have some work

7) You might not, but you won't care

( Steps 2 thru 4 can be repeated if you're able )
