Well, it's known bug with BOINC 6.6.36 and fix already available.
Look this thread and links in it.

Currently see s_s222_3s_01_137503_1248305261_0 trying to accomplish the impossible.

4.31.31 hrs completed, 87.155% done, and 5.45:36 hours to go.

Interestingly, when I began the BOINC manager to see how things were, BOINC indicated 15 hours to go, so the % done doesn't seem to correlate with the time.

Would it be possible to extend the deadlines? A few days just is too short unless you run a server or plan on running a desktop 24x7, and BOINC was really made to make use of spare CPU cycles, so as a desktop, the time seems too short.

From Message 26944 ;
You [also] have to understand that this project has short deadlines for a reason and isn't going to change it.

If you can't complete a wu in the time you have your machine running with the resource share you have set up, then maybe you need to either 1) increase the resource share, 2) install the optimised application or 3) consider not doing this project.

I have attached my old, very slow 233MMX to this project, and also I can only run it for 14 hours a day max.

The longest work units I usually get take 41 hours, so I can send the result back only an hour before the deadline!

If my old computer is slowing the project down too much can the admin tell me, as then I will detach it.

For what it's worth, my 11 year old 233MMX is very reliable, and has always returned accurate results, no matter what project it is doing.

Are you using an optimized app for it? That would help if not.
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.

I had a look at zslip.com, but I don't know which version I need, and I couldn't find any instructions.

My Intel Pentium 233 MMX processor doesn't have any SSE.

I will feel safer using the stock app, but thanks for your advice.

Not from what I seen on my iMac, I got the dreaded "Won't finish in time" error message.

After reverting to 6.6.28, I got work just fine.

Milkyway doesn't seem to be aware that Boinc can task share...
With SETU and Climateprediction runninhg, Milkyway says there's not enough compute time available and won't finish in time, so--- no new task.

Suspend SETI and Climateprediction and I get a work unit.
Resume all tasks and they always all complete well within their respective timeframes.

Only Milkyway has this problem... It doesn't seem to understand the concept of time-share multi-tasking. It's either being greedy about wanting CPU time or it's being stupid

BTW --- I've had over 20 years of writing and supporting large-scale real-time scientific systems, so please don't insult me by assuming I have no experience with multi-tasking real-time operation.

It's because of the 3 day deadline for this project. Boinc automatically puts them into high-prioroty. It will run them for awhile and eventually switch projects.

It could help if you looked through the other posts. This has been covered numerous times.

Classic case of not understanding how BOINC works. That's why I kept saying that there could be an issue with 6.6.36, and indeed there appears to have been, but not everything should be lumped upon 6.6.36, and none of it should've been lumped upon MW. Their project needs the turnaround time that they need. If people can't deal with that, then this project just isn't for them...

Edit: Not only not understanding how BOINC works, but over at SETI is using the standard application and not the optimized application. I'm sure that's my fault though...or MWs... :eyeroll:

How long are the BOINC developers going to let 6.6.36 sit out there as the recommended version? With as much disruption that it causes, you'd think it would be a priority to fix. :(

John McLeod handles the scheduling, I believe. You might also check with Richard Hasselgrove to see if perhaps he's tested and found something odd with 6.6.36. Since you don't have Vista or 7, you honestly don't need any version newer than 5.10.45 unless one of the other projects you're participating in requires a higher minimum version.

I've been using Vista a couple of years now and I've been using 5.10.45 the whole time. I tried an early version of 6 and I didn't like the idea that it moves files to other locations (C:\Users - I think) I want all my files and work related to Boinc in one place so if something happens I don't have to track stuff down. I haven't had any problems with 5.10.45 and have no inentions of moving to 6 until it is an absolute necessity.

Hmmm... did not know that. I thought 6.x was required for Vista compatibility. That's the regular 5.10.45, not one that someone custom compiled?

When using the 5.10.xx on Vista you have to change the default Program Files directory that it is installed to so BOINC can write to the folders.

At this moment , BOINC is running four tasks for two projects.
2 tasks for SETI due date 8/12/09 (finished waiting for upload) & 8/13/09 (45%) complete)...
2 tasks for Climate prediction due dates 7/10/2010 & 7/11/2010 - one year away!!

Boinc on this system is set to swap tasks every 60 minutes.

So there is plenty of time to complete Milkyway tasks within the 3 day deadline = as I have proved by suspending all tasks just to get milkyway downloads *and* completing them within the time frame without impacting the other tasks....

Reading previous posts does not solve the reality....

It's the one I downloaded from Boinc site after it was released... Not optimized.. Official..

I forgot to mention that. Thanks... I have mine in E:\Boinc

It's been a while since I made any changes here on both Vista systems that I overlooked that minor detail. <smile>
