I am crunching with a HD4770 under XP 32bit with catalyst version 9.6.
When MW WUs are running I get many VPU recovery events, sometimes, right at the start of a WU, somtimes, one or two WUs finish OK, before the recovery occurs.
After the recovery, I have to restart boinc for the other MW WUs to continue running.

I tried with catalyst 9.5 and even a beta of 9.7, but all the same.
Catalyst 9.4 and lower won't install, because it does not recognize the HD4770.

Is anyone running a HD4770 under XP32bit without problems?

Every Catalyst after 9.1 crashs Gipsels ATI-MW-App with Blackscreens / VPU-Recovers

Solutions:
try Vista/7 with current Catalyst
or
try to install the 8.12 on XP with a 4770 but the 8.12 dont know the 4770 PCI-DeviceIDs so you must install it manualy ...
or
pray to your god(s)/AMD that AMD will fix this

I cannot update to Vista or 7 at the moment, so how do I manually install 8.12?

Go here and download Catalyst 8.12 and install it, after following the instructions here and install Cluster Physics 0.19f client for Milkyway. The last link goes to ICE's community resource. This runs OK on 32 bit XP.

howto:

download 8.12
start the exe so the setup should start
there might be an error about no ATI Card found

if this error happens:

exit/cancel setup

I ONLY GOT GERMAN OS so the label could got an other caption

open device manager (devmgmt.msc)
search and select the vga / your 4770
select update driver
- if it ask something about Windows Update select NO....
- there should be a question automatic or select from list ...SELECT FROM LIST
- dont search i wanna select or something like that
- remove compatible hardware (v) and click on disk/drive button
- this should open a search combobox,

search the driver - it should be on
C:
\ATI
\SUPPORT
\8-12_xp64_dd_ccc_enu_72273 or somthing like that
\DRIVER
\XP_INF or something like that
there should be a CX_????.inf
and click OK

now it should show several ATI CARDS select one of "ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series"

than finish ....

after that
open explorer to the \ATI\8-12...\CCC and start the setup there to install the CCC

I tried with manually installing 8.12, but no luck!

After doing that, i could only use a screen resolution of 1360 X 768.
all ather resolutions redultetd in garbled screens.

I tried crunching MW in that resolution, but all WUs errord ot with the following error:

<core_client_version>6.6.20</core_client_version>

Problem:
Device 0: ATI Radeon HD 4350/4550 ...
not supporting double precision

No supported GPU found!

If you got a 43xx/45xx Card inside your Computer, MW will crash - remove it.
if your 4770 wont work with Catalyst 8.12 - you cant do MW on XP because the 4770 was newer than the 8.12 so only newer Catlyst would work but on XP that would mean no MW (or had to update to Vista...)

ps
You should try some tools like
SiSoft Sandra - got a infoplane for AMD/ATI Stream / CAL
Everst - GPGPU Info area

there you could test "double precision" support yes/no

So i will switch back to my old HD3850 Card for the moment and wait until a solution is found.

Use Cat 9.5 for XP32 bit (if using XP 32-bit)

Make sure to rename the appropriate files in windows/system32

Use GPU-Z to make sure it sees the right card.

------------
The reason for using this is because Cat 9.5+ will recognise your card - Cat 9.4 and below will not. 9.6 is flakey with MW, leaving you with 9.5. Then it's a question of setting it up correctly.

Priorities:

a) Get PC to recognise card with catalyst drivers
b) Get MW to work with those drivers by renaming the files

I tried the driver which was deliverded with the card (seems to be 9.5), and it is better now.
I still get a VPU recovery from time to time, but it finishes quite some WUs before, as long as I dont do anything else on the machine.

Trying to start other programs while MW is crunching often results in an immediate VPU recovery event.

So, it is better, but not perfect yet.

I am playing with the settings now to get it more stable.

Try going to the card manufacturers website (XFX, Sapphire, Asus, w/e) and see if they have v8.12 drivers for that card. For some reason the standard 8.12 ATI drivers you get from ATI don't recognise certain cards, but manufacturers will have a version that does.

OK, yeah you're stuck with 9.5 then. Just rename the dll files in the system32 directory.

When running MW, open up GPU-Z (if you can), and click on the sensors tab. Is the temperature stupidly high?

Go here and you can get the Catalyst 8.12 file.

Which doesn't work if 8.12 doesn't recognise your card. As mentioned in the thread already.

For example my Sapphire 4850X2, which the 8.12 drivers from your link won't recognise. However Sapphire's own Cat 8.12 does. So if those 8.12 drivers from that link don't work on the card, and the manufacturer doesn't supply 8.12 that work, then he's either stuck with 9.5 or a really kludgy work around.
