Researchers Hope to Block Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s own cells mistakenly attack insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone crucial to the process of converting sugar to energy. Patients who suffer from this form of diabetes must rely on regular insulin injections in order to survive, but researchers are looking for a new way to treat diabetes, and their approach involves attacking the disease at its root. They are working to create a vaccine that will selectively shut down the immune system cells attacking the pancreas, thereby preventing the damage that necessitates later insulin injections

Which Birthday Marks the Start of Old Age?

According to a US national survey on aging, the older people become, the younger they feel and the more likely they are to perceive "old age" as occurring later in life. The survey found not only that a gap exists between actual age and the age people say they feel, but also that this discrepancy increases with age. While, on average, survey respondents said old age begins at 68, people in the 30 to 64 age group maintained that it begins at around 70 and those 65 and older pushed the limit to 74. Respondents under 30, meanwhile, said they consider 60 the beginning of old age

Calorie Restriction May Prolong Life

Cutting calories may slow the aging process, reduce the risk of disease, and result in a longer life span, a long-term study of monkeys suggests. The study confirms in primates what has long been known to be true in mice, worms, flies, and other species. Over 20 years, rhesus monkeys whose diets were not restricted were nearly three times more likely to have died than those whose calorie intake was reduced by 30%. The rate of cancers and cardiovascular disease in the dieting monkeys was also less than half of those permitted to eat as they pleased. It is unclear whether other primates, like humans, would experience the same benefit from a calorie-restricted diet.

QE2 latest

Despite assurances to the contrary, it seems pretty clear that the new owners have run out of money and can't afford to refurbish her. The point is that it was a national scandal that she was ever sold in the first place.

Cunard had no business flogging off such an important national asset, one of the most famous ships in the world. If the UK government had an ounce of integrity they'd buy it back for the nation, but they haven't, and they won't.

Too Many Drink and Drive

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in 10 binge drinkers drove after the last time they drank heavily. Half of those drivers downed five or more drinks at a bar, restaurant, or nightclub before getting behind the wheel. Of the binge drinkers who chose to drive after drinking at one of these establishments, about 25 percent said they had consumed at least 10 drinks before leaving. In the US, more than 11,000 deaths from alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes each year are linked to binge drinking

Yoga Good for Lower Back Pain

Low back pain affects approximately 80% of the general US population at some point in life with sufficient severity to cause absence from work. According to researchers, people who suffer chronic low-back problems and experience mild to moderate functional disability as a result can reduce their symptoms simply by taking up yoga. In a recent study, participants who took 90-minute Iyengar yoga classes twice a week for 24 weeks, performing postures targeted at relieving chronic low-back pain, experienced a greater reduction in pain and depression than those who received conventional medical treatment.
