I have seen some discussion here and there, but thought it would be best to make a new thread about it (not to mess other threads and get enough attention) - Does MW work on 4890? - I remember Poorboy having one, but still seen him asking how to get it working, correct? I am in the process of ordering a new computer, and hesitating whether to get nVidia 285 (GPUGrid&SETI) or ATI 4890(MW). This comp will be used also for games, where both of these perform roughly equally. |

I don't have one anymore, RMA'ed um both as they were no use to me if they didn't crunch the MW Wu's. I haven't seen or heard of anyone else getting them to work yet either. |

I have seen some discussion here and there, but thought it would be best to make a new thread about it (not to mess other threads and get enough attention) It take some time, but after some trial and error I got mine to work with Catalyst 8.12. Extract the 9.6 and the 8.12 drivers to the hard disk. Then go into the C:\ATI\SUPPORT\9-6_xp64_dd_ccc_enu\Driver\Driver\XP6A_INF\B_81503 dir. and del all the files in the dir. GO to C:\ATI\SUPPORT\8-12_xp64_dd_ccc_enu_72273\Driver\Driver\XP6A_INF\B_72960 dir. and copy all the files over to C:\ATI\SUPPORT\9-6_xp64_dd_ccc_enu\Driver\Driver\XP6A_INF\B_81503 Run the setup file in C:\ATI\SUPPORT\9-6_xp64_dd_ccc_enu\Driver dir. The set up will say it cant find files with the ati or amd files that are listed in the ati_0.19f read me.Just find the one it is looking with the other name, copy to your desktop then rename it.Move the file back to C:\ATI\SUPPORT\9-6_xp64_dd_ccc_enu\Driver\Driver\XP6A_INF\B_81503 dir. hit cont. on the setup screen.Do it for all 5 or 6 files.when the set up is done youll have 8-12 on the 4890. EDIT I'm running windows xp64 |

ooooooo.... sounds like a solution that'll work for my 4770! I might have to call in sick to work tomorrow ;-) - da shu @ HeliOS, "A child's exposure to technology should never be predicated on an ability to afford it." |

ooooooo.... sounds like a solution that'll work for my 4770! I might have to call in sick to work tomorrow ;-) Didn't work but I'm gonna try it again as first time around I got a missing file that was not one of the 3 libcud*.dll files |

I need to get some detail on this because I thought I followed this thru the other night and it didn't work for me. Extract the 9.6 and the 8.12 drivers to the hard disk.Do you mean the files on the ATI site that are JUST the driver files or the whole package that includes ccc, wdm and the video drivers? If just the drivers which 'package' did you execute first (v8.12 or v9.6) to install ccc and wdm? If not just the drivers did you execute the install .exe for the package of all three and which did you run 1st, v8.12 or v9.6? I'm trying to get my 4770 running under WinXP SP2, 32b so everyplace you have "xp64" I have "xp32" files. I tried this and didn't have any success. I'm doing it again now and am documenting exactly what I did and what happened. From the Prior night I have the ccc, wdm and video drivers installed from v9.6 at the start of this. Then go into the C:\ATI\SUPPORT\9-6_xp64_dd_ccc_enu\Driver\Driver\XP6A_INF\B_81503 dir. and del all the files in the dir.OK but what I really did here was move all these to a folder under XP_INF called 'backup'. GO to C:\ATI\SUPPORT\8-12_xp64_dd_ccc_enu_72273\Driver\Driver\XP6A_INF\B_72960 dir. and copy all the files over to C:\ATI\SUPPORT\9-6_xp64_dd_ccc_enu\Driver\Driver\XP6A_INF\B_81503OK Run the setup file in C:\ATI\SUPPORT\9-6_xp64_dd_ccc_enu\Driver dir.Once this setup starts it gives the option of something like 'regular' and 'advanced'. I selected 'advanced' and in the checkboxes there I unchecked everything EXCEPT "ATI Display Driver". Now it give several warnings and let's me overwrite newer (v9.6) files with older (v8.12) files in /system32. Then it get's a "can not copy file" error on a missing file "atimpc32.dll". To resolve this I pointed it to my 'backup' folder and let it copy that v9.6 file from there. The set up will say it cant find files with the ati or amd files that are listed in the ati_0.19f read me.Just find the one it is looking with the other name, copy to your desktop then rename it.Move the file back to C:\ATI\SUPPORT\9-6_xp64_dd_ccc_enu\Driver\Driver\XP6A_INF\B_81503 dir. hit cont. on the setup screen. Finished and didn't get these messages... that tells me I must be at a different starting point or we are doing something differently. Takes me back to my two questions at the top. Must save this message here now... time to reboot. Sure hope it lets me edit it in a few minutes. |

Do you mean the files on the ATI site that are JUST the driver files or the whole package that includes ccc, wdm and the video drivers? The whole package. If not just the drivers did you execute the install .exe for the package of all three and which did you run 1st, v8.12 or v9.6? I install the v9.6 first, then uninstalled the driver from the controll panel. Then installed the v8.12,then uninstalled the driver from the controll panel. That should get you the two dir. on the C drive in the ati dir. Run the setup file in C:\ATI\SUPPORT\9-6_xp64_dd_ccc_enu\Driver dir. I installed everything but the folding at home. It should not give the warnings because we uninstalled the all drivers. If it cant find a file, first look in the 8.12 dir. if not then the 9.6 dir. |

Excellent, I couldn't manage to install my HD 4890 in Win XP 64 using Larry256's instructions. Tried a few times but must have done something wrong. Had to switch to Win 7 64. I have an Amaze HD 4890 OC which also has a default speed of 900 MHz, it has a Twin Turbo Pro cooler and is reasonably quiet and cools OK. Currently running at 74C GPU, 73C memio and 84C shadercore with fan speed set to 77%. Lots of heat from this card, I am running with the case sides off. If I put them on it would be an oven inside. It takes a few seconds longer than your Sapphire to complete a task. Possibly because memory is downclocked to 500 MHz or perhaps it is the different CAL version. 3.8 times faster than my overclocked HD 3850 though so I'll just have to put up with it. :) |

Sapphire Vapor-X 4890 @ GPU 900, mem 525 - fan running @ 54-56% is silent, temps are 80 for shaders, MEMIO 75, DispIO 73, core 72, win7 + Cat9.5 |

Now then, a little fan and case optimizing and the beast is down to 78C GPU and 76C Mem (running 900/1000). mic. |

I really am impressed with my Sapphire Vapor-X, even though it's "only" a 4870. Even when overclocked it's pretty much silent at load with the fan only needing to auto spin at 40%; temps at 71C core and 78C memory. I wonder how well the 5870 will do come late September? ;) In any case, congratulations to those who have their 4890 crunching away here. |

have mine running at 75% load, taking 74 sec per WU. running low to mid 70s for temp. fan audible but not too bad @35% it is. |

What brand w/ what cooler? Temps aren't much good w/o knowing what brand/model or which cooler it has on it. Thanx |

I'm trying Gigabyte GV-R489 now. It works pretty fast with MW, taking about a minute to complete a task, but in fact it's useless, because of very often VPU recoveries. I tried to replace Catalyst 9.7 (WinXP 32) with 8.12 (according Larry256's instructions) but with no luck - driver can be installed but it doesn't start after reboot. There is a 100% working method to encounter a VPU recovery - I just need to try to abort any pending or working task from Boinc GUI. |
