Originally I thought you had to have a 6.*.* version to run GPU apps, but at some stage found I could use 5.10.45 (contrary to what BarryAZ agrees) and have found it to be the least problematic for ATI gpu apps and it seems my RAC is still rising after using 5.10.45 (contrary to what BarryAZ agrees). Yes John, I am still crunching MW CPU with 5.10.45 as well as GPU apps (contrary to what BarryAZ agrees). I'm even crunching MW CPU in VM with MW GPU blasting away in main processing on the same box (i.e. running MW CPU and GPU on the same computer) - (I'm using 5.10.45 to crunch gpus, contrary to what BarryAZ agrees) ;) |

I've kept a copy of all the BOINC versions that I have used, I've done the same and have gone back to 6.6.28 on the only host that was on 6.6.36 - and the only host that was getting "Won't finish in time" messages. Now it's getting work - and finishing in time! I think I'll wait for a couple of versions before updating again. Rod |

Thanks for the considered reply, Ice. I do have a number of back copies of BOINC. Ones I had used, but 5.10.45 was not one of them. Go away, I was asleep ![]() ![]() |

IMO, you're tilting at windmills again... I interpreted the agreement as with the first part of the statement, that all the BOINC releases have problems. Additionally, 5.10.45 should not work for CUDA crunching, which is, in official BOINC parlance, "GPU crunching". The tasks you and others are processing here at MW that are using ATI cards are being forced into doing so by app_info.xml. In the later versions of BOINC that do have CUDA support, these tasks would be requested as "CPU", not "GPU". |

Interpret what you like. There is no CUDA in MilkyWay and I am crunching ATI GPUS with 5.10.45 and doing it faster than any 6.*.* version I have tried. I don't really care how you interpret official BOINC parlance. The fact is you can crunch MW ATI GPU with 5.10.45 and any suggestion that you cannot crunch MW ATI GPU with 5.10.45 is simply untrue. |

However, all tasks processed by you and others with ATI cards, as well as those tasks processed by those of us by our CPUs, come from one pool of tasks, which would be defined as "CPU" tasks. If they were "GPU" tasks, my CPU wouldn't be running them... Finally, it might be beneficial to try being less strict on requiring exacting precision with regards to semantics. Give a little bit of latitude in regards to how people might slightly misstate something, or at least appear to misstate things from your perspective. If you want to "make a stand" against something, it should be something worthwhile. I hardly think this is it... Good day... |

OK -- if you are running *CUDA* GPU projects (say GPUGrid or SETI) and have the requisite CUDA card, *then* you need the 6.x client. I'm certainly not an advocate for running the 6.x client if you don't need to run it. I think that if the MilkyWay_GPU plan of the Spring ever were to happen, it would identify itself as a GPU application and then (ATI optimized, CUDA optimized or CUDA native) you WOULD need to use a 6.x client. So, for me, the only places I run the 6.4.5 client (the others are even worse) are those where I'm running a CUDA card, and/or I am running Win 7 or Vista. If you don't have a CUDA card and are running Vista/Win7 you *can* run 5.4.5 -- you just need to manually restart BOINC whenever you restart the the workstation. If you are running ONLY Milkyway, then you (apparently) don't need the 6.x client - which is a good thing as from my vantage point, all the 6.x versions inhale.

Thanks Brian -- that is about what I meant (I didn't say it as well).

Mommy, Mommy, Ice is picking on me, making redundant references to my error. <grin>. I guess he REALLY needed to take me to the woodshed -- hope he feels better now.

You two, BarryAZ and Brian Silvers, should get a life. I have no interest in how you spend yours on debating Versions 6.*.* of BOINC. I am only saying that I am crunching MW ATI GPUS with 5.10.45 and any statement or reinforeced agreement that you cannot crunch gpus with 5.10.45, thus misleading anyone into thinking that you cannot crunch MW ATI GPUS with 5.10.45, is misleading. |

THAT WASN'T THE INTENT AND BARRY HAS SAID SO!!!! My suggestion stands: get less offended by people who don't state things with absolute precision. This, like the whole "on the cheap" thing just makes you look utterly silly. I'm sure you'll fire back a retort, as you want, in fact need, the last word. It is yours... I'm adding you to my filter for 2 weeks... |

Don't do that, this is sort of fun in a perverse behavioralist sort of way, don't you think? ;) I mean Ice chose to read into my *unintentional* error, some conspiracy against the 5.4.5 client use and the optimized .019f application which uses the CPU tasks available in MilkyWay and allows ATI-GPU's to process them. It wasn't some evil conspiracy, but rather simply an error on my part, which I have acknowledged multiple times. Yet Ice seems to need a meltdown on this for some reason. And it seems he really wants to get you and I all hot and bothered about his boiling ways. I think maintaining a cool view in the face of his heat might be causing some degree of upset for Ice, but for me I'm relaxed and simply observing the lad's tempest in a teapot.

I have no idea what these Mommy boys are babbling on about, but let's be clear about this. You CAN crunch MilkyWay ATI GPUS with BOINC 5.10.45 Anyone saying otherwise, or agreeing with old quotes that it cannot be done, is misleading. If unintentionally, then I am intentionally stating that you CAN crunch MilkyWay ATI GPUS with BOINC 5.10.45 I'm sure 6.6.36 is very nice, but since switching to crunching gpus with 5.10.45 my RAC has definitely gone up, although I have no idea what it could do for you. |

You CAN crunch MilkyWay ATI GPUS with BOINC 5.10.45. That could be confusing to some (since no GPU wus are availiable). Here's my version of that (in no offense): One can crunch MW wus with an ATI GPU using BOINC 5.10.45. Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |

Chill out Ice -- I noted that my own preference is for 5.10.45 -- if you actually choose to read my posts instead of go iceactive about them, you might be able to glean that. I also noted (if you choose to read my posts) that based on what you posted (you see, I did read your post on this, you should try reading other posts in addition to your own, it's good for the soul), I agree with you regarding 5.10.45. Now if you want to argue about me agreeing with you, that you should take up with yourself, consider it an icebreaker. I have no idea what these Mommy boys are babbling on about, but let's be clear about this. You CAN crunch MilkyWay ATI GPUS with BOINC 5.10.45 ![]() |

Let's play nice, friends...this thread is degenerating quickly. If you have an issue with 6.6.36 go for it--personal insults go to PM's or the thread will be locked. Thx ![]() ![]() |

Hey I just installed 6.6.36 and it seems the GPU app (which had been running 3 WUs at a time via default apps_info.xml) is now running 7 at a time. Anybody else see this? Is there an adjustment I can make to the apps_info.xml to correct this? Maybe I can re extract the readme.txt and just put in the line to set it to the default of 3. EDIT: Never mind after 5 or 10 minutes it settled back down to 3 WUs at a time. EDIT2: I spoke too soon it's back to running > 3. Right now 9 of 'em! And yes the WU times are stretching out. - da shu @ HeliOS, "A child's exposure to technology should never be predicated on an ability to afford it." |

You CAN crunch MilkyWay ATI GPUS with BOINC 5.10.45. That works for me banditwolf. Probably works for 6.6.36 as well - 'One can crunch MW wus with an ATI GPU using BOINC 6.6.36'. So long as it's clear that 5.10.45 will work for [some] gpus [ATI graphics processing units, a selection of]. |
