Is the thing watercooled and overclocked?

Wow, those things get hot. I'm not really comfortable letting my 5850 get above 70°C, even though they can handle quite a bit more.

25) Message boards : Number crunching : Tesla anyone? (Message 46625)

Tesla cards will work for this project, however they are not a cost effective solution. If you already have a Tesla workstation that you use for professional work, you can certainly run MW@home on it. However if you're thinking of buying Teslas solely for the purpose of crunching, you are going to be wasting an ungodly amount of money on an advanced feature set that BOINC projects don't use.
26) Message boards : Number crunching : admin response very bad (Message 46601)

I don't think you fully understand the situation. You see, after you first posted your issue concerning the stuck WU, the administrators of this project immediately held an emergency conference to formulate a plan of action in dealing with this dire situation. From what I understand, they teleconferenced with top minds from all over the world in order to generate a viable theory as to how this might be solved. After requisitioning the $20M in government funds necessary to hire the 6000 computer scientists required for the plan, they went diligently to work correcting this catastrophic failure. That's why the admins haven't responded to you, they've been working around the clock for weeks nonstop in order to fix your single stuck WU.

Hope this helps.

THAT'S what annoys me no end. If a theory is not testable, or is flawed, it is not a working theory. If the theory can be tested and does not work, it is incorrect i.e. WRONG.

I think you'll find that it's just as damaging to science to totally dispose of an entire theory on account of some flaws or inconsistencies, as it is to arbitrarily invent new concepts in an attempt to fill in the holes in a flawed theory. Even though a theory is incomplete (like string theory), it can later be revealed to be a piece of an even larger puzzle as new knowledge is discovered. If you've just thrown it away as worthless, then it may have to be completely rediscovered in order to put the puzzle together correctly. This has happened quite a few times throughout the history of science and mathematics, and it unnecessarily impedes progress.

2M credits as of last night. I will have to start posting at every 10M now I think, this 5850 is flying through WUs.

Just think of your MilkyWay WUs as sticks of warm butter, and an ATI video card as a turbocharged chainsaw.

Personally I like to run GPU apps solely on the GPU and save the CPU for apps that don't run on GPU. I feel this optimizes my productivity.

Slightly belated, but I recently crossed the 1M point on MilkyWay@home. This marks my first individual BOINC project to reach 1M.

The most interesting thing about 2012 is that we should be hitting solar maximum around that time. This is a period of increased activity from the sun as the magnetic field becomes twisted. It happens once every 11 years or so, and it hasn't wiped out humanity any time in the recent past. :o) I wouldn't be overly concerned at this stage.

To all you people with ATI cards: I really hate you right now. I just built a new el cheapo boinc cruncher with an Nvidia GTX260 because there is CUDA support for the majority of the astrophysics and other boinc projects I like to participate in. But the times you guys are posting for your ATI cards are just ridiculous. I'm assuming the WU's themselves are the same quantity of data as the ones for CUDA? Or are there differences in size that would make them process so much faster?

I believe our current view of how the universe is behaving is woefully inaccurate. To answer your question, in a limited way yes it is possible, just not quite the way you're describing it. That's really all I'm willing to say at this point in time, since I know how easy it is to be labeled a "lunatic" in the scientific community. I hope I can find a better answer for you sometime in the future.
