Connection timeout to milkyway.cs.rpi.edu

Posted 20 Feb 2023 by DarkPhoenix Post: One thing that could be your problem is that "Tor Nodes create tunnels that conceal a users identity", ie you are using a VPN, if your identity is hidden then you can't use the site, I have no clue about the rest of rpi though that does seem strange unless you are trying to get to places that require a log-in. The system running boinc ISNT connecting via Tor, the Node is a seperate System in my network but under the same public IP. Also just for context an entry/bridge node doesnt talk to clear-net websites it only directs encrypted traffic to other Tor nodes. |

Connection timeout to milkyway.cs.rpi.edu
(Message 75069)
Posted 20 Feb 2023 by DarkPhoenix Post: ive a similiar issue in regard of connecting to milkyway@home be it boinc or the website itself. After taking some time to dig whats going on i found a explanation. first of all. My internet is working fine for almost everything 99,9% of sites services (that i use/know) work, milkyway was the only thing reliabely not being accessable/timing out. Not only milkyway or cs but it seemed like the entire rpi.edu domain was timing out. It cant exactly say since when its been the case but i would say atleast 3 months likely more. The pattern i noticed in my tests were that once i force a reconnect to my ISP and get a new IPv4/v6 Adress i can access milkyway for an uncertain amount of hours but at some point the access seem to be dropped. I host a Tor Bridge Node (NOT EXIT) at home since years but it seems to the root of this issue because since i unplugged it ive no issues with milkyway at home at all. Now the only possible explanation ive to that is that somewhere on the way or at cs.rpi.edu is a blacklist in place that blocks every or certain IPs thats associated with a Tor Node. The ips of tor nodes are public data but normaly only EXIT nodes are affected by restrictions. i hope there is a way to get this guess verified or officialy denied. |
