1) Message boards : Number crunching : Using PCIe GPU Risers (Message 63489)

I have several GPU's from the old Bitcoin mining days, and am thinking about re-purposing to run here. They use to have 6 GPU's per system using the PCIe x1 risers. Will that work for this application as well, or do I really need the x16 slots?

I just built a R9-290x box and it's not receiving any work from MW@H.
Is this still an ongoing issue?

The 7850's were an old mining computer, which had been sitting for over a year. I just fired it up and loaded the boinc gui and it ran fine. I had forgotten how that was setup, but I found the MSI overclocking tool was loaded, which is where I got the speed details.
Down side is the box keeps going into "GPU Missing" mode, over and over again. Could be the overclocking, or could be the age. It's got lots of dust on it. It's in a back corner in my garage, so not easily accessible.

The Radeon HD 7990 is touting 1.9 TFlops (FP64)
That's slightly better than the Titan Black.
Has anyone tried this card?

So are your 7850s at default clocks then? I'd like to post that time for your 7850 as it would be the 1st 1 on the list :)

Probably, since I don't know how to adjust the clocks, it's probably whatever they are set to by default.

Is there a tool/program used to see what the clocks are current set at, and to adjust them? Id be happy to install it.

No need, unless you feel like it. I was more interested in the comparison with other cards. I had thought since this was a higher-end professional card, it might offer better performance, but if it's similar to a 280x, then that's good enough for me to make a choice.

HP offers a 4U, half-width blade which supposedly supports up to 8x GPU's. That would allow for 16 GPU's in a 4U rackspace. I was wondering how this might perform compared to other HW.

While im on the topic of GPU performance, does anyone know anything about these?

Saw this on the anandtech website, Seems to reflect Boinc with double-precision calculations. I know this isn't MilkyWay@Home, but should be close...

I've no idea where you're getting those numbers from.

Trying to understand how to read the numbers...

Seems like it's saying that the 4700 is baseline and the 7850 is only 61% as fast (slower) than the 4700? Doesn't make sense.

(1.000) ATI Radeon HD 4700/4800 (RV740/RV770)
(0.696) AMD Radeon HD 7870/7950/7970/R9 280X series (Tahiti)
(0.615) AMD Radeon HD 7850/7870 series (Pitcairn)

My Dual 7850's run MUCH slower than my cpu's in terms of the "credit" I am receiving. I still don't know where to get the timing numbers you are refering to in the above posts.

Which is the fastest GPU available currently?

Hi all. Where do I get the "speed" numbers from exactly?
Ive got several rigs, one with dual Radeon 7850's.
Im getting what appears to be crappy performance based on the "credit" im receiving. It's much worse than my CPU rigs, by a factor of 4x or more.
And that's not saying much, because my CPU rigs are also very flakey. I can't figure out how to get all of the cores working. Im always running less than the total number of cores...

Still having some issue with the cpu threading. Im only getting about 50 threads running out of 128 cores on the host. Looking for suggestions on how to improve.

Im having the same trouble, all the N-Body simulations just go slowly to 100% and then sit there with the cpu doing nothing for hours on end.
I went to the website and changed the preferences to not run the N-Body simulations (unchecked), but im still getting them in the work queue.

I have a n-body simulation which has been running over 2 days now. It's been at 100% for many hours, and it's using all 8 cores on my Windows desktop, but the cores are pretty much idle from the OS point of view.
Is that normal? Suggestions?
17) Message boards : Number crunching : Where can I find CPU and GPU comparasons (Message 63406)

Thanks. That link took me to passmark, which is a great site. Im specifically looking for details for comparason as it relates to Boinc and/or MilkyWay@Home specifically.
The GPU's I have include R9-2x0X as well as 79xx series. Im wondering how much work you can accomplish on these cards when compared to Intel CPU's.
I haven't yet figured out exactly to tell how my CPU's are going, since I only started a week ago. I just recently got a pair of Dell machines with dual X5680 CPU's (24 cores per machine), and a HP DL980G6 box with 128x 2Ghz cores running and combined they seem to push out about 100k credits per day. Wondering if the GPU's can meet or exceed that value, and by how much.
Ill probably see if I can fire up my box with Dual 7950's and see how that compares.

Is there a spreadsheet or graph showing relative performance of various CPU and GPU configurations?
I have a bunch of AMD GPU's from the olden-days of Bitcoin and am wondering if it's worth the effort to restore some of these GPU's for use with this project.
Right now, I have several CPU servers running on this project, and am collecting some credits, but I don't know how the GPUs would work in comparison to CPUs.
The only GPU rig I have pretty much ready to go is a dual 7950 rig, but I do have dozens of Raedon GPU cards just sitting on a shelf... Just don't know if it's worth it or not to build up rigs again...

PS, im a total NOOB here, just discovered Boinc SW last week...
