I am running W10,. If the multi thread tasks are the ones using 6 cpus I am having trouble. The tasks run very slowly, 3% after two days.

I am running 6 cores on Win7 64-bit. On an i7-4771 they are taking about 4 to 6 hours now (one is estimating 8 hours), but completing OK at this point.

I have just stayed away from ATI/AMD because of the challenge of installing the drivers and maintaining them. The Nvidia drivers just install and run with no issues ever. The ATI/AMD drivers are a complete fiasco as all the constant posts of issues posted attest in the forums.

True enough for the latest versions. But the RX 500 series is easy enough as I understand it, though mine is on Windows. And the power efficiency of AMD is much better here; I use about 90 watts (GPU-Z) on my RX 570 for my 100 seconds; I expect it would be more like 140 watts on the Nvidia cards.

I have a bunch of Nvidias, but they are used elsewhere (on Ubuntu).

I disagree. Here is a task both run on a 1080 Ti. Mine on Linux and my wingman on Windows.

My card did the task 10 seconds faster.

Are you running two cards? It looks like you have a RTX 2080.
But I have looked mainly at the N-body (many of them), and that was my conclusion there. Perhaps it does not hold true for the GPUs, and the difference in OS may not be so important.

I am very happy with my RX 570 on Win7 64-bit, averaging around 100 seconds per work unit. That is a bit surprising, since it does not have great dual-precision specs.

PS - You can get faster cards, but it won't do much good, since they usually have problems getting enough work for some reason. I am not sure whether that is fixed or not.

I request that you do one or the other, but not both, for the reasons previously discussed concerning the BOINC scheduler.

No, "Milkyway@home Separation" has CPU apps as well, see applications page.

You are right. I just attached a new BOINC instance, selected CPU only, and got both N-Body and Separation. It appears that something got lost in the transition.

On the other hand, what happens when you select both CPU and GPU? (That is, do you get only the GPU Separations then?)
I will try that later.

Just de-select "Use CPU". It is the only CPU project they have now.

After the last work unit finishes and it gets zero on the next request, BOINC waits 10 minutes and tries again.
Then, it gets a full load (85 on the last request). It is a strange problem, but not a major one for me.

Then after a couple of hours I got another 72, and then a few hours therafter 71 work units.

Then, at 5 PM I ran out and got nothing. But a manual request caused another 71 to download.
If they run out again, it is back to Folding. I can't stay up all night to get them.

Todays database unavailable was just about the last straw for me.

I wonder if it is because the server is overloaded, or just unreliable?

Also, I wonder how much computing support they really need at MW. With all of the high-end cards that people are starting to throw at it (and all the CPU cores available), I wonder if we are really needed, even with the new server. If they could give us a progress report of some sort, that would help.

I thought I would post my RX 570 times again, since I am now overclocking it a bit. I never do that with other hardware, but this card benefits a lot from undervolting (to 0.950 volts) and runs quite cool (63 C at only 20% fan speed). I could probably go a little lower, but it freezes at 0.910 volts. GPU-Z shows the average power as 76 watts.

The card is now running at 1348 MHz (1244 MHz is the default) on single work units. I use the ASRock Phantom utility to set the clock and voltage.

OS: Win7 64-bit
BOINC Version: 7.14.2
GPU Driver: Radeon 18.9.3, which is the latest that works with this card; the 19.x.x series does not install.
CPU: i7-4771 running at 3.7 GHz with HT enabled and 2 cores free. (The other 6 cores are running N-Body mt).

The run times are estimates as given by BoincTasks, which after running for several days are quite accurate.

Credit 227: Run time 104 seconds

Credit 243: Run time 112 seconds

I would try it on Linux, except that undervolting is not so easy, if possible at all.

I have concluded that if they are smart enough to map the galaxy, then they must be smart enough to know that by limiting the work units, they will lose the fastest machines to other projects (especially in view of all the server outages).

My guess is that they are getting enough work done with the slower machines to satisfy their needs. It may take time to analyze the results, for example, which can't be sped up further. So if that does not work for you, probably finding another project is the best solution. They all have their limits somewhere; there is not an infinite supply of work. We just need to move around to accommodate what they can supply at any given time.

I also think an explanation is in order. But I am now putting my RX 570 on Folding. They are willing to give you work, and it is useful science.

Yes, but I would suggest longer work units. They take only 2 minutes on my RX 570, and a Radeon VII would do them in only a few seconds.
The server must be constantly tied up doing uploads and downloads. Probably 20X longer would be about right. Haven't they considered that already?

Do you use all of the CPU cores to support the GPU?
Have you compared Linux to Windows?

It is enough to grab your attention.
How do the GPU work units do on Linux as compared to Windows? I have only compared the CPU ones.
