In the thread https://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=5007&postid=75561#75561 they have written, that some students would like to try to compile the app to macOS.
Mid November 2023, I have offered my help to port the application to macOS: https://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=5007&postid=76626#76626. I have also written a few PMs to the admins, but, there was no response since then. I guess, they have no interest.

They have a Github repository, I'm unsure how up to date it is but at least you can do some tinkering and testing.

Good luck with your project

I am still waiting for feedback from the project admins. No reaction on my PMs and forum posts.
I would not invest time, because not shure if the would like to have an application ported by a other person. I a very long past at an other project, there was some issues with the generated results due some "optimization" which gave some problems for the project.

That would be great, but the message you quote if from June, nothing since then.

I hope the admin sees your post, maybe you should post the same in a topic related to that application of the project ?

Merci! I have written the admins a PM.

I curious as well if Macs well be supported again in Nbody

Sjmielh

We currently have a student who is working on getting Mac Nbody running again. I think he has made good progress, but I'm not sure how far out we are from releasing a Mac Nbody binary.

Can I help you in any way to port the application to macOS? I have a lot of BOINC and BOINC apps porting expiriance. It's no problem to sign and NDA for me, if required.

Yesterday I have released Dotsch/UX 1.2.

Dotsch/UX is a Linux distribution for BOINC which easily installs and boot from a USB stick, hard disk and from diskless clients and also has some interfaces to setup the diskless server and the clients automatically.

For more informations have a look at http://www.dotsch.de/Dotsch_UX

New features in 1.2 :
• Build in NVIDIA CUDA support, a additional tool to enable and check the NVIDIA CUDA support.
• Persistent Live CD mode for testing the distribution as Live CD and store the data on a USB stick/disk
• Automated and semiautomatic backup of the BOINC client data and some other OS data
• Included Ganglia for performance monitoring of the Dotsch/UX Grids
• Pre Installed BOINC client 6.10.17
• Removed a lot of unneeded packages in the x86 and x64 distribution
• A lot of bug fixes and enhancements

Special thanks to all the peoples which supported and helped to make the new distribution possible !

Does this run along with windows or is this a stand alone boot? Not sure by looking over your site.

Sorry, don't understand excatly what you mean ?

Seeing your screenshot, does this need to boot up seperatly like a dual-boot windows/linux or can it be added to run in addition to windows? I have numerous USB ports and a few 1GB+ thumb drives.

It's a dual boot with in a seperate Windows partition or on a seperate hard disk or from a USB stick. The install routines did not modify anything to your running windows installation on the hard disk, except to install the boot loader grub for the dual boot.

I think that it make no sense from the view of the perfomance to let Linux ran within a virtual machine on Windows. The perfomance los due the overhead is to much.

Is this like what Ps3Grid has as an option for the PS3?

It's a lot of more than the PS3Grid Live USB stick...
Dotsch/UX can boot as the PS3Grid USB pen drive linux from USB, but it's also possible to install Dotsch/UX on a hard disk and also setup a diskless server and the diskless clients with the included tools easily.

Today I have released Dotsch/UX 1.1. Mayor changes are the availability of a 32 bit (i386) and 64 bit (x64) distribution, mixed i386 and x64 diskless client on one single diskless server, build in BOINC client 6.4.5 and bug fixes
for the USB, hard disk, diskless server and diskless client Installation tools.

The distribution is available at http://www.dotsch.de/Dotsch_UX

Post:
I have just joined this project and all downloaded WU's have failed with Error 1.
I am using Fedora Core 3 which uses "libc 2.3.6".
Has this issue been seen to or do we just dump this project?

I have just connected another Fedora Core machine but this one runs version FC6, with "libc 2.5", just to see if that one will work.

I have found no note anywhere on this project by the Admin staff that "libc 2.4" or higher is required.

Please be patient. Travis (the project admin) awnsers questions normaly very quickly. But as there are no awnsers these days, it looks he is still in vacation.

It looks like the Linux application requires a GLIBC >= 2.4.
14) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : libm.so.2 on solaris (Message 1253)

Post:
But to make sure that it work on all releases a check of the different libm.so.* on a Solaris 10 system would be needed.

What do you need:
/lib$ uname -srpiv
SunOS 5.10 Generic_118833-36 sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V490
/lib$ ls -l libm.so*
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root           9 Apr 10  2007 libm.so -> libm.so.2
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root bin 23828 Jan 23 2005 libm.so.1
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root bin 792916 Jan 23 2005 libm.so.2
/lib$

Thank you very much !

According to your output I think that the astro application has no problem, if it would be linked explicit against the libm.so.1.

Btw. I recommend you strongly to install the BOINC 5.10.27 package available from www.dotsch.de/boinc.

I only see 5.10.17 was this a typo?

Thanks

Ups, sorry, was a typo. 5.10.17 is the actual version for Solaris on SPARC.

Do you know who the other projects out there have done this?
There are at least some which have a working client on this box, so they have solved the problem somehow.
I'll check the other apps I have running sucessful on the box, for dynamic linking(What they link).

Yes. I guess you are running my BOINC client, my SIMAP and Yoyo apps succesfull on your systems.
I have linked em dynamicly at all libs, including libm.so.1. I have not any reports, that it did not work on Solaris 10. But to make sure that it work on all releases a check of the different libm.so.* on a Solaris 10 system would be needed.

Btw. I recommend you strongly to install the BOINC 5.10.27 package available from www.dotsch.de/boinc. The 5.11.0 had caused some problems at my systems.

Is there a way to check if they have any lib statically linked in?

"strings $FILE | grep lib". But so far I know are only few staticly libs avialable at Solaris.

Post:
I have the impression, that the missling linkage against the lpthread causes this pthread crash problems.
Also, I am not shure now, if a staticly linked and working binary is posible at Solaris. Evtentualy a staticly linked binary could cause crashed at other Solaris releases.
What is about to link the binary dynamicly and include "./" (the projects/milkyway... direcory) in the library search path of the application and send out a file (link) to /usr/lib/libm.so.1 out with the application which is placed in the projects directory . - Also I am not shure if this work, because I am not shure, if the libm.so.1 is existing in the newer Solaris releases.

Edit: other solution could be, to link the application explicit against the /usr/lib/libm.so.1. But it requires, that the libm.so.1 exists on the newer Solaris systems, too.

... and the WU is shown as running in the BOINC Manager ?

This is a known problem with some older BOINC API and lib. If the application would be linked against the recent BOINC libs and API the problem would be fixed.

thanks for this info, i'll get our BOINC api and lib updated and see if it fixes it.

Which version of the api from which BOINC release version do you use ?
