Very frustrating, especially for a retired person who needs the computer for more than crunching. Re-installed the newest version of Catalyst. This time, nothing from MW will run, even some (but not all) of the modified fits error, that didn't happen before.

I don't have the time to mess with this any longer. If the project staff gave a damn it would be a different story. I read the whole thread that Assimilator kindly referenced, and not one single input from staff. Obviously they have enough crunchers, so solving a problem that only affects a few isn't important. If it was, they would keep their work units compatible with new releases of Catalyst.

Obviously, I've screwed-up my video driver, and made it useless for MW. I'll try to return when I shift to a linux platform later this month.

Okay, I may be done with Milky Way. I went ahead and blew off Catalyst, and installed 9.1. When I did, MW told me "the GPU was missing!" Moo Wrapper ran fine. I reset the project, and new tasks loaded & immediately aborted. I removed the project & re-installed. Same thing, tasks load and immediately abort. I'm going to put back the newest driver & whatever runs runs.

Open cl ATI tasks still have computation error for me using 6950. The modified fit task seems to work fine, so I guess I'll just run that. Have no other cpu tasks running at all, so cpu load is not a problem.

I went back to an older driver, but opencl still errors out. The other task seems to run okay.

Just rejoined MW after long absence from BOINC. Also got computation error on first wu's I tried. Also 6950, same version of AMD drivers as Rantanplan. Frankly, I've forgotten most of the tweaks I used to use, so I'll wait to see if there's a resolution to this thread before trying a bunch of stuff.

Hi Pete, the cc_config.xml has to be in the base BOINC DATA directory, not the program directory. The DATA directory has the subfolders named 'notices, projects, slots and symbols'. Then restart BOINC. I would also recommend BOINC 6.12.34 (which you're using). Versions later than that so far have some serious problems.

Thank you so much! That seems to have fixed my little "problem." I guess it's just something about my setup that's weird. The other night I had just MW running on gpu, with other projects running on cpu. It finished the 12 MW tasks & sat there all night without reporting. Boy that's frustrating! I could have done with a cheaper gpu, but I went with DP specifically to run MW. Oh well, been in the computer business since '69, I should know better than to let them frustrate me.

Ran just a few WU's last night because for some reason my machine wouldn't update after running 12. Half the WU's I did were "validation inconclusive." First time that's happened to me as well.

Thank you! I think the project is working fine for me. I ran MW alone all night and it kept chugging without any problems. I'm still getting used to having this gpu, and I think it's just a question of letting the BOINC manager balance the whole thing out.

Thanks for the responses!

Goodness, I'm running the same version (x64), and sometimes it works like that, sometimes not. I have MOO set for no new tasks, and it only has two left, so I'll see what happens tonight when I let it run again. This morning, 12 MW tasks were 100%, and so were 10 MOO tasks. Net was running fine 'cause CPU tasks were updating fine. Update button cleared both MOO and MW. If I can get MW to work like yours all the time, I'll stop running MOO, I just don't want the thing to idle all night just running CPU tasks.

Update button works fine, I never tried "reset project," I guess 'cause I don't know what it does.

Thanks for your reply.

I spent the extra money to upgrade to a 6950, even though it was more than I needed for the video editing I do expressly because I wanted to be able to run MW. The project gives me 12 tasks at a time, I understand that is a project limit. Problem is, after those tasks are finished, there is no automatic update to report them and get new ones. I complained about this before and some kind fellow sent me the following as a cc_config.xml file:

<cc_config>
<options>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
<report_results_immediately>1</report_results_immediately>
</options>
</cc_config>

I placed it in the BOINC folder in "Program files," and it seemed to work for a while. My system would finish one task, and immediately go out and get another. Since MW went offline, it no longer seems to work. I finish the 12 tasks and in never updates, even with MOO (the other ati task I run) suspended. I have the priority set to 300, no other ati task running.

How do you get the darn thing to update? I really can't see what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks,

Pete

The task I checked (I didn't know you could do that) is running @ 413.79. The card is running at the default 830 Mhz. It has been running MW for about 4 days. My problem is getting enough WU's to keep it busy. According to my figures, MW yields 150 credits/running minute, while Primegrid is at 87, Collatz at 111, and Moo at 199. I find if I only run one other ATI app, I get the most MW units for some reason, so I'm running Moo and MW. I chose the 6950 over Nvidia 'cause I wanted to run MW, and it didn't matter for the video editing I'm doing. It's disappointing that I can't get enough work to keep it busy. Oh well, I can't get SETI WU's either right now.

Avg total run time on my system is about 83 seconds. Range is 66 to 130 or so. Does that sound right for the ati14 task? I'm still new at this.

Back with another question. Just bought an ATI 6950 so I could do MW, & it's working fine. Problem is, even with priority set @ 400, project will only give me 12 WU's at a time. I crunch them in a few minutes & it takes Boinc considerable time to update & replace them. Had to add Primegrid & Collatz just to keep card busy. Is there some way to get the project to send more MW WU's?

Thanks!

Hi: I know you folks are great at helping-out those of us who are "casual" crunchers and aren't hardware types. I have undertaken a video editing task that is going to require a video and memory upgrade. I'm going to 64-bit and an extra 4 gigs, and am looking at a card that will do what I need, which this one will, and Milky Way, Einstein, and SETI as well. Looking at a PNY GTX 560 from Newegg at $185 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133397) Looks like it would be entry-level for crunching, and an affordable price.

Asking for any comments anyone would care to make. Is there a cheaper bang-for-the-buck card that would do Einstein & MW, or is this one about as cheap as I can go?

Thanks,

Wanted to thank you for that link. I did, indeed, install that client, and will try SETI with it. I've been doing this since '99, but never really got into all of the different special things you can do to speed things up.

Thanks again!

Thanks, but all that's far too confusing for me. Think I'll just stop running this app and continue as I have been with the others.

Thanks, I'm already doing SETI, Einstein, and the climate model, so I'll do the CPU-only form of MW.

Climate Prediction 112,577.04 25,415 19.69 18,740
Einstein@Home 128,755.10 33,104 22.52 751.16 35,626
MilkyWay@home 426.12 88,872 0.07 266.26 21,469
QMC@Home 51,290.30 8,481 8.97
RALPH@Home 2,596.00 1,273 0.45
Rosetta@Home 79,996.87 29,537 13.99 228.96 36,122
SETI@Home 178,890.06 89,384 31.29 157,107

Perhaps I should ask, what's the downside of just doing the CPU tasks? Also, where do you find that little roll-up of all your projects?

Thanks,

Pete
