Well, if credit is that important to you, just crunch MW ...

It's a redundancy check. Each workunit gets produced twice to make sure the results agree. If there is processor error or someone is using a modified app version that doesn't produce the same results, the workunit gets trashed.

But that's at odds with the "20 workunit limit" sticky: http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=250

To quote (selectively) from Travis:

by the time you finish crunching them, the population has moved so far away from where those points were generated that the work you've done on them is basically useless

So resending a workunit a week later is pointless. What if it doesn't agree with the first validated result? How does the genetically spawned 'tree' get pruned of erroneous parameters; By then it will be tens/hundreds of generations evolved away from the first result.

Not looking to start an argument, just curious :)

It will be work units that didn't make the deadline(for one reason or other) being resent, shouldn't last for long

I thought a quick return was very important to the genetic algorithm.

Seems a bit daft to resend them when they've been stale for a week!

What I can't believe is that the poll was my idea, but opened by ChertseyAI faster than I could see. :-D

Hey, I did gave you 11 minutes and 25 seconds to start the poll ;-)

That's long enough to pick up 6.5, er no, 2.17, no, wrong again ... 4.06 credits from this project :-D

Al.

p.s. It Al with an L. AI would be artificial intelligence. I have little enough real intelligence, let alone artificial :-D

Anytime I abort a result from another project ( especially if that result is in progress) I get a computation error from working mw tasks.Gives the process got signal 11 stderr message. Heres a result (Dang Orbit and Cosmo)

I've seen simliar behaviour, and it's not just MW WUs that get killed. For me, when it happens my firewall pops up to warn about unexpected inter-process messaging. If I allow it, I lose a WU, if I block it BOINC just sulks ;)

Only seen this on ancient BOINC versions (e.g. 5.10.7). Have never seen it on 5.10.28 (the newest version I run).

Looks like a 'kill' is being sent or propogated from the aborted task and clobbering the next thing in the chain.

Serves you right for running flaky projects ;)

At the moment RS and Cosmo are much higher than that....

At the moment RS is granting on average 32% more credit than MW on my 3 hosts. The 5.64 app runs twice as fast as before and still gives 27 credit.

DA must be apoplectic ;)

The overwhelming majority do not care for credits.

Correct. We like to have fun. And do some science.

The overwhelming majority, 300,000+ users

Erm, you've got me with that stat. Boincers are up about 1.2million IIRC. MW is nowhere near that.

The largest, so-termed server-farms, mostly seem to be Einstein project-based

Link to these 'facts' please?

and most certainly do not do calculations for credit as they only do Einstein calculations. As for others... they may do many calculations, they may have a significant percentage of the work calculated, but they are in the extreme minority when viewed as a percentage of users.

So, a significant percentage is now a minority.

I'm struggling here ...

If they leave... so what? There will still be 300,000+
users doing calculations with more than 300,000 computers connected.

Ah, I can see where you've gone wrong. You're talking bollocks.

How many BOINCers are there?

How many crunch this project?

Crikey, that was hard work.

The farmers who do it for the credit far out weighs those who do it strictly for the science.

And, as a result, the farmers actually do More Science!

Ouch! So it is! I'm picking up crazy credit on 2 of my hosts ATM! ;)

Quick! Someone call DA! EMERGENCY!!!!!

RS = they are reducing credit today due to their optimized app that was just released. Check your facts first.

Erm, can you give me a link to this? The only reference I can find at RS says:

"We've been discussing that issue, and haven't come to a final conclusion yet, partially because the linux versions haven't been released".

Which is what I thought Travis was going to do. Get the apps right accross all platforms, get the WU length/content sorted, and make a balanced judgement.

Didn't quite happen like that though ;)

Post how much credit you think is 'fair' per WU for this project.

No discussion, just post a number! :)

I guess the real question is where do you want to be amongst all projects?

Isn't ABC and Cosmology currently the highest? Would hate to be in range of like LHC or Spinhenge( bout lowest). This now might be near dead-center but I think Set-optimized should be the standard...so what would that value be? 3-3.5?

Thanks for your input Dave ...it is much appreciated :)

Not sure where to jump into this thread, but this looks as good a place as any ;)

Current 2.17 credit gives me a 30% lower RAC than before the optimisations. Wonderful :( It's not as if MW was even the highest RAC credit that I run (and I don't do Cosmo, ABC or QMC).

I suspect a credit of 3 would bring us back to where we were, when nobody was complaining. I was one of the first to complain that the 1.18 credit was too high.

To me this arbitrary reduction to a third seems overkill. Not sure who was putting so much pressure on - OK, I can guess ;) - or where this "3-times too much" came from.

So, suggestion. Why not arbitrarily reduce the credit by a half to 3.25 - Still a little high, but try it for a while.

And of course the new apps will be along Real Soon Now, meaning that we need to come up with a new figure.

I like this project. Nice science, great communication, a sense of involement.

But I'm afraid that the arbitrary credit hack makes me worry about the 'politics' behind the scenes.

So, I'm afraid to say, I'm out.

Hey Everyone,

I made it so this forum was useable to express anything you might have to say. The reason you see so many errors is because we're upgrading to PHP 5 which the new php files are but we're currently on PHP 4. However, there still is some base functionality while we're doing this. Sorry for the inconvience.

Yep, but there should be work again after the db purge (see front page news). ;-))

Well, it'll be nice to have a break from MW ;)

PrimeGrid was my main project and MW was always a fun thing to play with every day.

Now MW is my Mistress!

The seduction began with the 'new version of the app every day', drawing me in.

Then the unavailability - Only providing work to the most faithful of slaves.

But the rewards - Credit, and lots of it ... The GECCO Paper ... The roller-coaster ride of work, no work, assimilator problems, Cute Kitten pictures, The Curse Of Renkar ...

Nurse! I need my medication ....

;)
