7) Message boards : Number crunching : What is Computation error (-5,) running MilkyWay@Home GPU tasks? (Message 70664)
Posted 11 Mar 2021 by Holdolin
Post:
Having a peek at your tasks you seem to have several computation errors. Did you recently update your drivers (or did windoze decide you needed updated drivers)? Driver issues have been known to cause such problems. Especially if they are installed while you are crunching, as they basically remove the old drivers first which causes the card(s) to error out as they have no current driver installed.

It could also be an aging card going to bed. I've heard tales of the 900 series cards going to bed in the last year or so.

Either way, I'd recommend rebooting the system. If it was a driver update the new drivers will load on boot and you'll be back in business. I mean in actuality it could be many things, but let's start simple.

Whelp, looks like stripe 85 done went to the dogs, or my systems just decided they don't like them. Hard to say what the % is as the validate errors from the last wave are still showing on my stats, but the numbers are climbing quickly.

I'm starting to see validate errors on stripe 85. It's nowhere near 10%, but 3 today when there have been none for several days.

I laugh only becuase I did pretty much the exact same thing a couple weeks ago. A contest in another project so I set my que to 0. This projects comes out of maintenance and i'm like "gee, there's still a problem". Ya there was a problem alright, and ID10T eror. Glad you got it resolved.

not sure why but after i set my app config to 0.20 i only got a total of 9 wus total, i switched to 0.19 and got 10 wus total, hopefully 5 each.

Ya, I noticed something similar. You post got me to get off my duff and set mine from .25 to .20. Until I read your reply I thought it was odd that some of my WUs were still completing in the time they were at .25, yet others were taking a tad longer.

It really depends on *which* high end card you're actually talking about. In my dealings 'round the DC circles it's been said that Nvidia cards see little gain in running multiple concurrent WUs. The AMD cards are a different story. I can only personally speak to the Vega64, RX580, and Pro VII. I run both the RX580s and Vega64s with 2 concurrent WUs each. My Pro VIIs run 4 concurrent tasks. I think i may be able to squeeze more out of the Vegas and VIIs but I just haven't gotten around to it. I believe part of the equation is the High Bandwidth Memory those cards use. The best way to figure it out is either talk to somebody with your specific card(s) or take notes on runtimes for single WU operation, then set it to double and see if your WU/time rate improves.

I've seen like 2 since the maintenance. At that rate it could be something totally unrelated to the WUs themselves such as upload/download corruptions or some such. WIll most def keep an eye on things though. Great to see others are doing the same:)

No, you will only "loose credit" if the unit cannot be validated. Once validated you and the person that was also assigned to the unit will both get credit.

Without going into a computer science lesson, that's just how computers work. A GPU talks to it's CPU. How much depends on the application.

Ya, that happens. What's going on is older stats don't delete immediately so many of those inconclusives are from older WUs. Same thing with all the invalids from stripes 84 and 85. Was kinda shocked at seeing so many till i stopped to look and see it's older data. Out of 380 invalids, only 2 are recent and were server cancellations. All the rest were older.

Ok, time to turn in my "guy card" and give y'all a laugh at my expense. Like many of you, I participate in more than one project. For me it's this one, Prime Grid, and Einstein. My Nvidia GPUs are running PG and my AMD cards are here. I hit up Einstein when this project went through that rough spot the last couple days. Now this all relates to the thread I promise. I noticed that Einstein seemed to be slow to give me work as well, but there is chatter over there about WUs that allowed me to believe it could be me. Now this project is back to normal and as I said I was getting few WUs while others have said they getting work no prob. So i got to thinking "gee Hold, what would cause all your projects to get limited work?" I strolled over to PG to see if I found any primes being Tour de Prime and all and it hit me. You idiot, you set your WU que to 0 days. So ever hopeful, I set up an alternate venue that allowed several days que and ploped my primary MW cruncher in that venue. Told MW to get work and POW...900 WUs. Sorry if I cause you any worry Tom, looks like all is actually well with the servers, I'm just a scrub. Ok, y'all can stop laughing now lol.

So in watching how things are operating I came to a question. Was it intentional to greatly reduce the amount of WUs a user gets per request? Before the outage i was getting 900(at most) WUs per request, now I'm getting 22.

Communication in my most humble of opinions is vitally important. Not only does it keep we donors up to date, but shows that those running the project have not only an interest in whatever the goal is of the project, but those that donate cycles to the cause. Thank you greatly for continuing to keep us as up to date as possible :)
