The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is a United Nations-sponsored initiative aimed at harnessing the potential of information and communication technologies to build inclusive and equitable information societies worldwide. BOINC has been nominated for a prize at the 2024 forum, and has passed initial hurdles; the next and last step ("Phase 3") requires public votes. The award would be a very nice boost and validation for BOINC and all our projects; if we can get our communities to vote, we should have a decent shot at this point...

Voting is pretty simple, takes just a few minutes; instructions are here.

(*The deadline for votes is Sunday: 31 March 2024, 23:00 UTC+02:00)

There are awesome additions to the Schedule for The 2021 BOINC Workshop.
Steven Clark from nanoHUB has been added to The World of BOINC presentations on April 14 (only 2 sleeps from now) and Max Ryabinin from Learning@home has been added to Tech Talks on April 21.

Vitalii Koshura - BOINC for Android, Steven Clark - nanoHUB (San Diego Supercomputer Center) and Max Ryabinin - Learning@home have been added to the Speakers List.

The agenda for Community Discussion + Tutorials on April 28 has not been posted yet but World Community Grid Tech Keith Uplinger has an exciting announcement for that day:
"I am planning on doing a tutorial similar to what I did in Chicago about setting up a BOINC server and running from scratch. My plan is to have it run on ubuntu 20.04 for ease of use for those to set it up."

I received my login details to Day 1, "The World of BOINC", on Wednesday, April 14 several hours ago, so they are being sent out now. There's still time to Register for this free event.

BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) is an open-source software — and community — that enables volunteers to donate spare processing power from their PCs, laptops, and phones, to power vital scientific and medical research.

Aggregated, these resources enable cutting edge research across mathematics, biology, physics, quantum chemistry, climate prediction and more.

The BOINC Workshop is comprised of three sessions. The first will showcase projects that using BOINC, highlighting the role of citizen participation in advancing scientific research. The second is a forum for BOINC projects to discuss the technology, their accomplishments in the past year, and technical needs moving forward. The third is an open-ended community discussion.

Who should attend?
The BOINC Workshop is for anyone interested in harnessing science, technology, and online community to advance knowledge and effect change.

(*Part of the workshop, “Tech Talks” and “Tutorials” will be focused on people running, or interested in running, BOINC projects.)

Where is the Event? How do I participate? Where do I sign up?
This year’s workshop will be online, via Zoom. Please register to get the event URL.

I’d like to present, who do I contact?
If you’d like to speak on any BOINC-related topic (science, technology, community), please register or contact us.

Can I watch a recording later?
We’ll be posting highlights to YouTube - but to participate in Q&A, and other interactive elements of the workshop, it’s best to join us live :)

There is a line in the <head> of the index page that makes the text http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway_cgi/cgi appear at the top of the page when viewing in a browser.
<scheduler>http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway_cgi/cgi</scheduler>

Other BOINC projects have that commented out and that text doesn't appear when viewing in a browser.
<!-- <scheduler>http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway_cgi/cgi</scheduler> -->

Would this work here?

Thanks for your time and information Jake, and my apologies for hijacking this thread.
I agree that it's most fair and more interesting to wait again.

As a side note, I just had another founder transfer fail on another project and this time noticed this response after I re-initiated transfer:
SMTP connect() failed. https://github.com/PHPMailer/PHPMailer/wiki/Troubleshooting
The current founder has been notified of your request by email and private message.

Likely not the problem on this site, and maybe just an insignificant mail send fail, but could something like that block some other call to the code and so not actually initiate founder transfer?

Thanks!
I no longer see the database error and I agree that the error did not cause the founder transfer fail because the database error was there for a least one other project (Collatz) where the transfer could be completed.

May I burden you further and ask if you can explain your fix simply enough for me to forward the info to other projects that may be experiencing the same database error?

Also, may I burden you even further to ask you to investigate why the founder transfer may have failed?

I can wait another 60 days to try if you need.

[Edit]Jake Weiss wrote:
I am not sure what method you were using though. Maybe you can give me a little more direction to where exactly you were seeing an issue.

When you are a member of a team you have an option on the projects team page to initiate a Team foundership change.

I think there may be two seperate issues here.
I see the same database error when logged into the team page at Collatz but I was still able to finalize the founder transfer there.
I don't see the database error on the few BOINC projects that didn't show the option to finalize the transfer after the required wait period.

When I'm logged into this site and visit my team page I get a database error that is not there if I'm logged out.

Also, I requested a change of foundership and after the 60 day grace period instead of being presented with the option to finalize the transfer, I could only choose to initiate the transfer again.
I'm not sure that the error is related to the change of foundership fail because I've had the fail occur on 3 or 4 other BOINC project sites that didn't display the error - but I'm sure I've seen that error before on other project's team pages.

Thanks for looking into this Jake. I see what you have removed, but it's still not working for me.
I think as a final step you need to add
<script src="https://www.google.com/recaptcha/api.js" async defer></script>
before the </head> tag.

The head code that you have now is
<head>

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE8" >
<title>Edit your profile</title>
<link rel=stylesheet type="text/css" href="http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/main.css" media="all">
<link rel=stylesheet type="text/css" href="http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/white.css">
<link rel=alternate type="application/rss+xml" title="MilkyWay@Home RSS 2.0" href="http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/rss_main.php">

</head>

But it should be:
<head>

<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE8" >
<title>Edit your profile</title>
<link rel=stylesheet type="text/css" href="http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/main.css" media="all">
