I know its "outdated" I didn't ask about that. I asked if the project will SUPPORT it.

I went with the 8800GT because my mobo looks like it only supports a single pci-e card.

The 8800GT should be supported once Milkyway adds Cuda support. The 8800GT is on the Boinc/Nvidia list of GPUs that support Cuda. And as previously stated, you can put a larger GPU in, it will just take up more room inside your computer, not require two PCI-E slots to connect to the motherboard - they only take up the same physical space as two single slot GPUs would take.

Yes, that used to work until I got the GTX 295 installed. Now I don't boot into OS X unless I first change graphic cards and really desperately need to use Aperture instead of Lightroom.

After transitioning from OS X to Vista I ran into some cooling problems. Under OS X I can use SMC Fan Control to adjust the rear fan speed, in order to cool the memory banks. Under Vista I could not find such a tool - Input Remapper constantly blue screened my Mac Pro, so that didn't last long at all. So I decided to do some tinkering around inside:

I put a SilverStone FM121 and routed the wires around the case, and installed the fan speed potentiometer in the rear. Temps are much lower now. Now I can safely crunch for MW and I no longer worry about frying my Mac Pro. ;)

A few of my computers weren't getting any WU from MW for weeks as well, but at the same time two of them were getting a steady stream, and without any scripts. I now have those computers that weren't getting MW WU crunching for either ABC or CPDN.

Even if there's a steady stream of WUs, there aren't enough to last even few hours without hitting the Update button, are they...?

I'd just wished the WUs were larger with rather longer datelines so that my offline tower can crunch on them for days without resorting to backup projects. The problem here is that I can only download a maximum of 6 WUs per processor for any given instance.

I left my Mac Pro running 24-7 for a week to try out Vista 64. The MP also has 8 cores, so it had somewhat ample WUs available. I've since throttled down to a more normal few hours a day, so my daily credits have diminished accordingly. I haven't tried 6.6.20 on OS X yet since I've been running Vista almost exclusively of late, so I don't know if things have gotten better. I guess I was lucky with my MP in getting WUs, because some of my other computers weren't getting WUs at all.

Now there's your problem. :)

Very likely! ;)

I've tried 9.1 initially, but that was before 0.19e. I then tried 8.12 but my system just refused to install it (Dell/Vista 64 at the time, now running 7 x64). I tried 9.2 and it seemed a bit better, but still crashing. I will wait until it's official to use the 3870 for crunching again. I need stable graphics to still be able to work in Photoshop.

Your 8800GT won't be that fast as all double precision ops will be emulated by several single precision ops, but your GTX 295 should do just fine.

That I've already seen in crunching for GPUGRID. It's very slow, taking about 24 hours to turn in a single WU. But the GPUs will go a long way in playing COD4 and Grid, when I'm not crunching away in Boinc ;)

I look forwards to putting my GTX 295 and 8800GT to good use once CUDA is implemented. I also look forwards to using my 3870 without crashing my graphics driver every 5 minutes.

There may yet be a LOT more performance to squeeze out of OS X. I just bootcamped Vista 64 and been running it in my Mac Pro for a week. Under OS X (10.5.6) it was crunching about 6-7k daily, maybe 8000+ on a good day. But after I put Vista 64 (and using optimized app under 6.6.18) the MP is pulling 15-19k a day! I'm not knocking on jedirock's efforts, they are truly appreciated, but there may be some more performance that can be gained from OS X - unless OS X itself has some limiting factor that we don't know about.

I wasn't getting any WU until I detached and reattached MW. Hopefully it goes the same way for my Dell, which wasn't getting any WU for this whole past week.

I got that too, so I reinstalled Boinc and everything is working smoothly with the optimized app.

On my Mac Pro I've noticed a slight bump, maybe ~3%. However, on my old Power Mac G5 it seems to have sped up by quite a bit. I can't put a figure yet on the G5's improvement, but will know in the next few days. Thanks jedirock for your hard work!

Thanks Cluster Physik and Ice! I'll give it a try when I get back on my Dell. Does it play nicer with the 9.2 driver or is 9.1 still better? (I couldn't get 8.12 working on my Windows box).

SATAN, I can't seem to run at 3.2GHz for extended periods without crashing. I've throttled down to 3GHz and lower fan speeds, and that seems to be much more stable. I've left my mac running at home so when I go back I will see if all is still well. But would you know if there's a fix to the accelerated clock, or is just a fact of life for an oc'd mac?

Update: those fan settings may be good for the hardware, but it's not for the hearing... it gets a bit loud. And it froze the computer after two hours or so. I have to play around some more with the speed settings.

I've put off overclocking my mac since last year, but tonight I tried it and it seems to be doing okay so far. I have a Mac Pro with dual 2.8GHz Xeons that are now oc'd to 3.2GHz. It's hard crashed once, froze one time, but I believe with smcFanControl properly adjusting fan speeds I can stabilize things. I've set the fan speeds as follows:

CPU_MEM: 1500rpm
IO: 1500rpm
EXHAUST: 1000rpm
PS: 1000rpm

iStatPro indicates my cpu's are hovering between 37-40C, and my memories don't get above 50C. Without oc and with OS X's default fan settings, memory temps can get to 80C while crunching! Not everything is peachy... the overclocking tool makes everything in the system faster, including the clock. So I have to rely on my wrist watch or my cellphone for that. It does seems faster at crunching, but I won't be able to tell until later. I was averaging 8000+ credits a day (on a good day) on the Mac Pro, we'll see how the oc will affect that.

So it was working only the system was more or less unresponsive?

I'm working on that and it will hopefully much better with 0.19e.

Yes, it was creating a few seconds delay in doing pretty much everything other than crunching. Sometimes my cursor to would become jerky. I appreciate your hard work Cluster Physik, and others too, and I can't wait to put the 3870 back to crunching in the near future.
