Mary, your quote had me interested so I did some calculations to see how much force would be necessary to stop a bottle cap (1 ounce) traveling at 23,000 mph in about 1 sec (when it hit earth). Turns out its about 291 newtons. Now a person on earth who weighs 150 pounds exerts about 650 newtons on the earth. But since the area of the bottlecap is so small it would do significant damage similar to a 75 pound weight on top of a needle.
43) Message boards : Number crunching : Win98 no longer supported? (Message 10270)

Yes, i think its quite stupid. It actually gives me a warning saying the flag for windows 98 compatibility is deprecated.

We've had numerous database problems within the past few days. The one we just fixed minutes ago was innodb log files getting too large due to debugging of the original problems. Problems on top of problems. Hopefully we're ok now.

Working on it...busy bee busy bee. We're trying to solve the mystery of the sql server chomping up 150% of our cpu cycles. Since we have 2 cpu's it goes up to 200%.
47) Message boards : Number crunching : Site goes very slow at times? (Message 9674)

Yes the page is very slow to load at times. It has something to do with what a previous user said about the boinc application querying the server repeatedly and causing excess load i believe.

I use VS2008 (bad decision, should've stayed with 2005). I can give you the sln files if you wish but i doubt you'll be able to use them in 2005.
49) Message boards : Application Code Discussion : What's needed to compile the app? (Message 9282)

Hello all,

I use Visual Studio. You have to get and compile all the boinc libs, which i believe they offer a VS solution on the BOINC website. After that, just follow the instructions from boinc to compile applications for windows. Its a learning process. You'll get linking errors along the way and find out what you have to add.
50) Message boards : Number crunching : New faster application? (Message 8349)

Post:
This is not good. The faster application is throwing out garbage results. These results will not be counted and you will not get credit for them.
51) Message boards : Application Code Discussion : compiler optimization flags (Message 6814)

Post:
Well we're not going out of our way trying to make things portable here so people can compile it on many different machines. The makefile is basically just for us to compile the application for others to use. I think it's safe to assume that someone who knows how to compile cross platform also knows how to change the makefile accordingly. If you'd like to make changes to the makefile, you can post them in a new thread here and we'll implement them into the version if they're valid.

This isn't related to the -ffast-math discussion, but it looks like the x86_64 compile for Linux isn't actually doing x86_64. The i686 target has -m32 in the CXXFLAGS, but x86_64 doesn't have a -m64 flag anywhere. Good to see SSE2 is enabled though.

You don't need a flag if youre compiling on a 64bit machine. We only used the 32 flag because we were compiling on a 64bit machine.

I've tried O3 previously with this project and it has caused run time errors so i had to go back down to O2 . Might give it a shot again though.

Folks O3 is dangerous in gcc 4 and is not recommended. It has proven in the past to cause errors during runtime. O2 is the highest we can use.

It's actually due to the security hole. We are working to patch it and upgrade the server software. It required immediate attention.

This is true. However, the new assimilator just got finished yesterday so we will be releasing the new app within a week and we will have to see how it compares.
