1) Message boards : Number crunching : Inaccurate run times - de_nbody (Message 74900)

Post:
In the end some 70+ jobs were cancelled due to the end date. Shame the jobs dident arrive with a more realistic run length. I know I could change the amount of work to store, but other projects get it about right...... usually.

Posted 6 Jan 2023 by nairb
Post:
Nearly 100 of these arrived with an estimated run time of 1.5 to 3.5 hrs. These can usually be done within the deadline. So far, some of the tasks take up to 18 hrs on an 8 thread machine. Non have been within the "estimated" time....

Is this normal ??. With the machine also doing other projects some of the mw w/u will miss the deadlines
3) Message boards : Number crunching : Very Long WU's (Message 74388)

To add to the long w/u examples.
Estimated time of 1hr 30 min (approx). Ran for 22hrs 11 mins. Its a 4 core I5 running Fedora 36.

On the other hand a w/u on a fresh install of WIN 10 and an intel I5........ estimated run time of 19hrs. Looks like taking 14 hrs or so. Which is the preferred way.

You may also see many of your N-body tasks recently have only taken a few seconds to run - that happens when the simulation calculates that it needs more than 150k timesteps.

Yup, just had one of those. Lasted all of 1 second.
The other w/u had a claimed runtime of about 1hr 40 mins before starting but took 19hrs 43 mins to complete. I am hoping some of the other w/u will be shorter, otherwise some w/u will not meet the deadline.
5) Message boards : Number crunching : cpu usage (Message 74188)
Posted 15 Sep 2022 by nairb
Post:
On both the win10 & linux machines the nbody tasks only seem to use about 90% of the cpu. Both have the cpu usage set to 100% on the computing prefs. Other projects use the full cpu (100%).

Is this typical of the nbody process??

8) Message boards : Number crunching : Intel Pentium 3 (tualatin ) (Message 64074)

Yes it looks like its down to very old linux version. 2 results have been returned OK 1 more to follow. I did wonder if the pent 3 had become to old. Its possible to upgrade to a later version of linux but in all reality its a waste of electricity to use these old machines for more than a few days but fun to fire them up and give them something to do now & then.

I am not sure my dual pent 75 would complete a w/u in the time scales needed....

I could not find the min requirements to run this project but I dug out my old dual pentium 3 (tualatin ) machine and attached to the project. It seems that some of the w/u de-80-DR8... start to process fine and the others fail straight away.
I know the old pent 3 are a bit ..... old, but are they nolonger able to do this project.
Its also on linux, an old version (fedora 6).

Is there a min requirements page??

Its looking good. Nothing has failed.

Pentium 4's back on the menu. Which is good coz the other machine I could used is an dual Athlon mp2800. And they dont have SSE2 - poor things.

Thanks

Its a pentium 4 and has dont MW work before.
This time all jobs failed.

For a while there was no website at all. Things are getting better. I get the project down message as well now, but for a while there was no upload.

Bit like the Fobos-Grunt probe

Did you mean lack of SSE2. The old, no - ancient cpu's do have SSE. Just downloaded a single w/u and it failed as before with signal 4 on w/u

Got 2 w/us on a machine runing fedora core 14. Both failed with same error

2 w/us of type ps_separation_13_3s.

Looks like linux is out of favour again.

The machine has done a few w/u ok. Then gets a batch of de_separation_13_3s....
and all failed with:-
Stderr output

<core_client_version>6.10.17</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
process got signal 4
</message>
<stderr_txt>

</stderr_txt>

This machine is running fedora core 8 (a bit old I guess) Linux.

Has something changed or are these w/u a bit suspect.
