Today I started getting workunits for GPU:

14.01.2010 22:02:34 ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD 4700/4800 (RV740/RV770) (CAL version 1.4.344, 512MB, 1101 GFLOPS peak)

The result:

14.01.2010 22:06:18 Milkyway@home Starting task de_11_2s_const_3_23501_1263499526_0 using milkyway version 21
14.01.2010 22:06:20 Milkyway@home Computation for task de_11_2s_const_3_23501_1263499526_0 finished
14.01.2010 22:06:20 Milkyway@home Output file de_11_2s_const_3_23501_1263499526_0_0 for task de_11_2s_const_3_23501_1263499526_0 absent

L.E.: seems a project reset solved the problem, there were some old files in milkyway directory which caused the errors... Sorry for trashing so many workunits :(

Jean Paul, I also had his video card until about six months ago. The problem is it cannot crunch, therefore it is useless here. I searched the shops and found a nice HD 4770 at a low cost and bought it. It now crunches happily at Collatz (not MW).
Hope you find a CAL compliant video card too!

Ah, btw, take a look at these strange messages:

13.01.2010 22:51:29 Milkyway@home work fetch resumed by user
13.01.2010 22:51:31 Milkyway@home Sending scheduler request: To fetch work.
13.01.2010 22:51:31 Milkyway@home Requesting new tasks for CPU
13.01.2010 22:51:36 Milkyway@home Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks
13.01.2010 22:51:36 Milkyway@home Message from server: No work sent
13.01.2010 22:51:36 Milkyway@home Message from server: Your computer has no NVIDIA GPU
13.01.2010 22:51:36 Milkyway@home Message from server: Jobs for CPU are available, but your preferences are set to not accept them

What should I do to get GPU workunits?

My memory says that an ATI HD4770 needs a minimum 450W PSU for single-GPU and 550W for Crossfire, am I right?

Very good idea, a much bigger WU cache would definitely lower the network usage and the the current hardware would be kept longer. Suppose I use a dial-up connection, wouldn't it be much cheaper to update MW once in a few hours?

Travis, tell us what you think about this idea.

Question, how to lower the HD 4770 memory speed without using CCC, since CCC causes problems?

That's easy.
Lower it -> close CCC -> crunch

Close Boinc, start Riva Tuner, lower it, hit apply and Save, and you're done!

The solution would be running a minimum number of other applications in Windows. Running WMP, CCC, and other programs that access the video board while crunching result in driver resets. Flash content in IE8 also interferes with the video board, so I usually suspend MW before browsing rich-content web pages or running games.

4770 from Gigabyte with Catalyst 9.8 on Win 7 x64 and CCC uninstalled.

3 WU's are done in between 4-5 minutes (with my CPU, what can I ask for?)

BTW, if you don't believe me, let's take some screenshots:

My no-doubt-simplistic fix:

if(pc's rac>50,000) //most likely gpu
{
send larger WUs
}
else //most likely cpu
{
send smaller WUs
}

Hey, hey, your solution is good but the RAC is too high. I am just managing to get a 10,000 RAC with my GPU.

I have an Ati HD 4770 and it's working fine on Windows 7 with Catalyst 9.7, but beware, opening CCC, Windows Media Player or GPU-Z will crash the driver. Anyway, Riva Tuner is fully compatible with this board(OC at 860/3652 Mhz).

I've recently purchased an ATI card which is able to crunch, but only had VPU recoveries with catalyst 9.6. The day before yesterday I have tried catalyst 9.7 and-impressive- it worked!

Now the only problem I have is that Boinc(6.6.38) doesn't recognize my 4770 card("no CAL device") and therefore only one project can be run at a specific time. I want you guys to help me do a script to force Boinc to run both WCG and Milkyway(GPU) simultaneously and ask for WU's at a 5 minutes' interval. This would really help my box to never being out of work. Thanks in advance!

LE: it seems that setting <ncpus> to "3" solved a part of the problem, but BOINC doesn't ask for enough work to keep up with the vga card. What can I do?

Hmmm... Found out that my machine was also crunching some AQUA WUs 160 qubits long.. Maybe this is why I am not receiving any work. Anyway, my work cache is set to 4 days, I think this is enough. Thanks guys!

Hi all.

Today I received some strange messages from Boinc:
24.06.2009 22:37:17 Milkyway@home Message from server: No work sent
24.06.2009 22:37:17 Milkyway@home Message from server: (won't finish in time) BOINC runs 51.7% of time, computation enabled 100.0% of that

What the heck has happened with my project?

Thanks to arkayn and banditwolf; both solutions worked and now I'm crunching a lot faster:)

Hi! Just a few weeks have passed since I started crunching WUs for Milkyway. Three days ago I installed Windows 7 build 7068 and I'm wondering, where can I put the optimised app? Because in this beta there is no "All users" directory and there are no signs of milkyway in the BOINC directory. Thanks
