Those ATI cards should run OK, Double Precision is necessary, so check?!

After cleaning out dust and [i]Trojans
and reïnstall WINDOWS 7 x64; Service Pack 1, I installed
BOINC 7.0.25 (x64) on a separate disk partition, atleast the DATA part, Program
executables are on the BOOT disk. B.t.w. the CPU is an I7-2600, HT=ON .
Using 2 EAH5870 GPU's, (by the 'looks'on an output file, you can notice, it also will run on nVIDIA* cards). About 65 seconds per WU per GPU. CPU isn't used
for other purposes and core 0 has a constant load of ! 50% (Thead 0, as HT is on!)

*(OpenCL, not CUDA).
Runs nice..............

After a lot of 'Trojan and viral', infections, I had to clean out 3 hosts,
2 of them now have work.
The I7-2600 + 2x EAH5870 GPU's now run Milkyway and do very well, I think.
With the I7-2600 free to load and unload the GPU's, they do a WU in 60 to 65 seconds, which I think is good.
I run WINDOWS 7 64bit (OEM) Pro and BOINC 7.0.25, even with only the GPU's used, the system gets very hot! And need additional cooling, using cold outside air.
I started on wednesday, very early, about 01:00, but found the system shutted down, this morning. Thermal shut-down!
And I noticed the 4 cores, with HT turned on, have a ~20% average load.
The DDR 3 1600MHz, also gets hot. Also use a C(ompact)F(lash), as
Ready-Boost-Cache, making the HDD's, 5TByte total, faster on reading and writing.
It uses (a staggering) 550Watt per hour, so that will be 'My Donation", as
I'm (very) low on income.............

Milkyway, Einstein, SETI, bêta too, and GPUgrid are now my main projects.
(Still have to install optimized app.'s for SETI MB and Astropulse.).

Doen't this require information about CPU and GPU(s), since these are detected
by BOINC (6.12.34; 64bit). And probably in the preferences in your account, but
you are right, you can't actually choose an app for CPU, CPU+GPU, and GPU,
only*
* Some CPU use is always needed.

I run the 'standard or stock' application for ATI GPU, ati14. Which is(was) installed,
when I made an account, for this host. BOINC shows the available hardware, like
CPU, Memory, Harddisk and GPU(s).
(System is an I7-2600 + 2 HD5870 GPUs; 1000Watt psu. Real use is 520 Watt).

I still have a 'JUNIPER' or HD5770, which is a Single Precision GPU.
Excellent and fast card, not to be used in Milkyway, but Collatz C. or SETI (Bêta),
etc.
A few days ago, I started gettin new work, which goes amazingly fast, every 1 to 2 minutes 2 WUs, are finished and UPloaded and another 2 are downloaded.
And maybe this Double Precision and High Load, 99% drives those 5870s
to its edge, the whole system, with an I7-2600 CPU (HT=ON), heats up the room with
550W/hour. (Even an AC is needed, 3 QUADs and 480; 470 and GTS250 GPUs).

But 'one has to have something to do' , besides work, living a life, etc., etc.
(Why am I telling this?). ;-)

And about using an app_info.xml file, can be usefull, if you want to run run 2
WUs on each card, but check if it works OK and give more efficiency by doing 2, in
less then double time, when doing 1!
[color=green]
<coproc>
<type>ATI</type>
<count>1</count>(0.5)(0.33)
</coproc>
<cmdline>1(2)(3) instances_per_device</cmdline>
[/color[

(I used to run 3 SETI MB WUs on my GTX480 and X9650CPU, no problems!)(Only heat)

Only, no typos in these app_info.xml file, all stated in this file, has to be
present or, it starts raining errors...........(I once saw about a thousand WUs dissapear
cause of such an error, tried to run 2 Einstein WU for GPU per GPU.
One typo...........error...........

Now only 1 per GPU, sometimes, I do turn GPU; Voltage and frequency down, Memory only lower frequency, or an auxillary or regular "office" Fan, wirh 1 side of the case is open.

Haven't seen MW work in some time now, it looks like projects are basically underfunded and, like SETI and some more, crunchers need not only 'donate' their free computer cycles but also money for new servers?!

Since the start of CUDA/CAL/OpenCL GPU crunching, only a few people are needed to 'crunch', when looking at the huge difference in RAC or Average Work Throughput, between CPU only and GPU crunchers.

Maybe the whole concept of Distributed Computing, has to be reviewed.
Changes in hardware (Moore's Law), and thus software are changing that fast,
some projects are probably better of when doing the crunching on a few Mega-GPU-Computers, in order to keep their server problems under control.

Just my 2 (Euro) cents..............

Found an
ERROR with an GTX480.
No NOT this one, when I 'clicked'the link, I got :Unable to handle request?!

Since I have one myself, now crunching GPUgrid and Einstein and SETI waits to
install and run the new servers, soon I hope. I haven't tried a GTX480 & 470 on Milky Way. Curious if it beats an ATI 5870 and 4850, which I use now, with an Q6600, 650Watt PSU, is just enough to feed both cards and CPU, 550Watt, when used @ 100%, use (cold)air from outside to feed the intake fans.
Only useable if it's colder outside, most of the time, like the Netherlands :), can even make/replace a heater, only the fan noise, can be too 'present'.

It seems like the cards Compute Capabillity is wrong, it has to be 2.0, not 1.3.(OK for GTX260 and up)

Tried the new app on a GTX 460 and it works. The Fermi cards are darn slow at DP though. My OCed GTX 460 averaged 1372 seconds for the 239 credit WUs while my HD 4770 cards do 230 seconds for the same. The GTX 460 is pretty slow at GPUGRID too. It does do a credible job at Collatz though: 600 seconds/WU.

19/10/2010 15:28:08 NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 480 (driver version 25896, CUDA version 3010, compute capability 2.0, 1536MB, 1332 GFLOPS peak)

The GTX470 has 14 MultiProcs, (112 cores), GTX480 has 15 MP's (120 cores).
Had both in 1 host, an ASUS P5E Mobo, which has given me a lot of headaches.
GTX460 has 7 MP and 56 cores.
The same Mobo, with an ATI EAH4850 & EAH 5870, doesn't produce errors or has any
other difficulties, with these cards.

Both the 470 & 480 are very power hungry, an 850 Watt PSU, doesn't seem enough!
+12V DROPS TO +11.48V, runs OK now I've disabled the 470.
480 can do 2 SETI MB WU's at the same time.
The ATI 5870 uses, both with 95% GPU Load, about the same as the 480. But throtles, back further, when not used. The amount of ' raw' FLOPS=2720GFLOPS,
4850 is rated at 1000GFLOPS, both running Windoze XP, the first XP64, the latter
WIN XP x86, both Pro. (PSU=650Watt)

Still run ATI cards at MW and Collatz C. and NVidia runs SETI, GPUgrid and Einstein.

No clue, as to why, the 2 FERMI's won't run, whithout random stops, no heat, since it has no case. P5E uses the X38 chipset.
And the other, with 2 ATI cards, does what it should do, whitout failures or other issues.
5870 GPU.
4850GPU.

Post:
Since all the latest CPU's, AMD, INTEL, (VIA & CYRIX?), are capable
of doing SSE2, this is made the 'stock' or standard application.
CPU is needed to 'load and unload' the GPU('s), I'm not
sure if SS(S)Ex.x applies to the GPU capabillities.
I'm still a 'nobody', concerning GPU capabillities.......

Arrrrggghhh!

That's what I got a few hours back.
But I haven't been able to find out, what exactly is going on, expected
a message on the Front Page, about the new NBODY-simulation
and where you can find this, so I can Down Load this file and use it?

Probably the last GPU-WU, I've got, also noticed a message,
your app_info.xml hasn't an NBody entry, or something like it, typing this on my LT.
Where can I Down Load these executables and probably a corresponding app_info.xml file?

Can anybody point me in the right direction, so I can download these?

It's always worth to crunch for a Project, why else would you do
it? Credits, well they give an amount of work done, that;s what they're for,IMO.

Is it possible to run the nBody app.(?) on CPU+GPU?
Think I posted this question before? Sorry and feel free to remove it :)

Still run the GPU + CPU, Optimized Application, which still works like a charm, is there a Scientific Reason for this change?

Or a result of Moore's Law?

Absolutely no idea what nbody{-search} is, probably should visit these forums more often, I'll try to find and read something about this New Feature, or other way/method of mapping th Milky Way!?

Just changed a HD5770 for a EAH5870, with a EAH4850 which was already present, all on an ASUS P5E Mobo and Q6600 CPU. (All stock hardware settings, do use an app_info.xml file, to run 2 WU's at a time, but it's not necessary and gonna skip it.

Since I get 1 or 2 tasks, when 1 or 2 are Reported and (almost) inmediatly validated.

I still get one at a time, but it's goes fast on a 5870 GPU, especially compaired to a CPU.

It was obviously done on purpose....

Oh.. and btw, make sure you reduce that guy's team credit as well by the same amount...

That sounds only fair, cheating has to be punished severly, otherwise,
it all would become a mess.
I don't want that and I think nobody wants a Data Base of bogus information.

B.t.w. just changed a HD5770 for EAH5870, quite a difference, not only D.P. but
fast, too.
About 100 seconds GPU time.....

Hi Arizona Moon, that's way to do it, get someone else to do it ;^)
Haven't seen your on the SETI Cafee Forum, lately, but neither have I and
last week, SETI was down, as you may heard, probably inpossible to not hear that, from someone ;^)
.

And, I also think it's the first time, I post on these Forums, do like to see some friends from SETI, having moved to this forum.
For whatever reason, that might be ;)

As you have noticed something, that's true, have become addicted, assembling crunching rigs, SETI, MW, GPUgrid and BOINC, the glue
which 'keeps the Projects in line' and Distributed Computing to work, etc.

In Crunching terms YES, except an UNexpected outage/failiar
at SETI@Home and SETI-Bêta, the well known and still excisting SERVER issues, which will be solved after a BIGGER server is swapped with the one
with some unexpected behavior.

But I had a great weekend......

And wish you all a beautifull afternoon, evening and night ;-).
