What I got was asses calling people that talk about cross party parity whiners.

If I were a moderator, much of this thread would go as flames.

Yes John lets not discuss the facts ...just call me an ass or a whiner

Only if you stop threatening projects with xml stat manipulation or non-inclusion :)

I am aware (as well as you should be) that this is being done at the highest levels of BOINC to various project administrations.Aren't you a contributor to BOINC programming and hence admin or privy to?

Why is this situation with unfair Seti optimized allowed to continue while BOINC is pushing for cross project parity? This is what needs answering.

Come back and talk cross project parity when that situation with Seti is fair....I and others might listen then ;)

So far you have chose not to reply about this situation and that tells all.

Lets not forget that Seti started the 3rd party optimized app which is inherently unfair to the average user as he has to be aware of,capable of, and d/l said app.....that way they can say a few thousand users run the standard app and we can help the "informed" users inflate their credits thus getting BIG crunchers to stay with Seti and not look elsewhere.....what a way to run a business eh JM Vll?

If BOINC admin is really serious about cleaning up this mess then they will stop Seti from allowing 3rd party apps and take them internal to allow all users to benefit. 1st clean up your mess closer to home before attacking other projects credit awards.Otherwise your points become meaningless....

Here everyone has a chance to be optimized based on their architecture/OS and controlled by the project....much fairer and scientifically sound....but of course the facts and my rant may be ringing your ears by now so I will desist at the moment as I have said what is needed on this subject and hope by now you get my point.

Having approximately the same credits per hour for a particular host across projects is what is SUPPOSED to happen in BOINC. If people are tired of hearing about this, then please ask the project administrators to get the calculation right rather than being proud of running off people that keep making that claim.

Projects that generate grossly too high credit claims should be removed from the cross project stats sites as this is just a way of stupidly inflating your cross project credit scores.

The long tasks really should be granting about 50 CS per task. Granting more is anti-social of the project administrators. The project administrators should look at what other projects are granting per hour for a particular host and attempt to match that here.

Participants who continually badger projects on this subject aka "Credit Police" should be deleted from the cross project stats IMHO.

Any stats sites that attempt to modify xml stats will be boycotted and thus loose their user base and advertising revenue thus nullifying this superior Boinc/Seti attitude that they are in contol...."Its the users stupid" to paraphrase which have control sorry ;) I will 'volunteer to lead the boycott'...now banish me.

Its nice to know that someone thinks they can regulate 50,80,100 projects this way ;)

If I am not mistaken doesn't the Milkyway Project use optimized apps? Thereby conforming to the side rule governing such apps? Thereby conforming to the prescribed Gestapo credit for the original un-optimized app?

Seti opened the credit Pandora's box with their allowed use and abuse of optimized applications....and now they attempt this strong arm approach again to squash it because it detracts from their user base?

Oh gosh darn I just realized Seti just changed their credit awards and philosophy ...guess this means all the good little projeckts must fall in line to das furor....or else!

Yes you do detect bitterness on my behalf based on years of cross project parity shenanigans....,political at best .....controlling at worst.

Yes JMVII they should evaluate against Cosmology as Milkyway is way too low in comparasin, and Milkyway has said optimized apps exonerating it.Please post this over there as I am ready fer ya ;)

They send one minion after another don't they? At least this one didn't try to hijack a thread.

The only thing I've seen to the contrary is if the Computer gets kicked off unexpectedly like when it might lose power for a second during a thunder storm the Wu's will error out most of the time ... :)

I reported this problem to admin some months ago....nobody else said anything so Dave never looked into....I thought because the work was only a few minutes long either it wasn't noticed or didn't care........now that they are longer...

Unexpected shutdowns, normal shutdowns, unusual switching of tasks, aborting another projects work, project suspension/resumtion ,etc can all cause computation errors in milkyway.I think they are all process got signal 11 error.

...So yes, the extra time spent has a definite value. :)

Oh really! What is that "definite value"? If the computation time is increased by a factor of 30 or 60 (for example), is the "definite value" increased by 30 or 60? And if the computation time is increased by a factor of 30 or 60, the available computing resources (in terms of throughput) for Milky Way have been reduced by a factor of 30 or 60. What is the "definite value" of reducing the computing resources by 30 or 60?

Is the increased accuracy 30 or 60 times more valuable? Seems highly unlikely or the project scientists would have increased the accuracy long ago. That they didn't do so before shows that your so-called "definite value" is small indeed.

A modest increase in accuracy could have been credible. But be clear about what's actually happening here. It's not much about the science. Rather, resources are now being largely wasted and accuracy is being "tuned" in order to relieve pressure on the server. There's little "definite value" in that.

Ok Bill & Patsy...you are obviously new here by that post...and your criticism.

We now for about 9 months have been running genetic searches built by Travis to show that the application works and papers have been written about the process of the searches. These have been the short units where fine tuning wasn't needed and a coarse representation was good enough to prove the process.

Nathan has explained in the science section what the new searches are....basically taking real data and using the applications search pattern to come up with populations that fit......he started short also, but with the server overload went to a more fine tuned approach.

Because this is all new cutting edge stuff he can go to whatever fine tuning desired because there currently is no data at any level of resolutions.
I am sure he can go back at any time to check differently, various resolution levels...and this is just the 1st step to match population searches to currently known data.....once that is proved the goal of predicting somewhat known and unknown and unmapped regions is in view...this IS OF DEFINITE VALUE!!!

Your naive attempts to attack the science and decision as somehow 'uncredible' and a 'waste" escapes me.If they want to increase the resolution by a factor of 1000 ...fine with me.Its the learning process that is important here not the 'factors'.

Your statement of computing power being reduced by a factor of 30 or 60 is false...computing power is the same,,,the number of results are reduced to find the "sweet spot".

I for one am very excited about the research done here at Milkyway@home due to the science that we are getting to that helps explain how our galaxy is evolving ....as well as the teams responsiveness to all issues earns them my top resource share at the moment!

In the future please read the science section and understand the subject matter before you post such dribble!

I think when Travis is back he will change the purge time....the only reason it is so fast now was the load on the server when they were short.....Travis is the only person with permissions to change this and other parameters so we are just waiting for him to get back and adjust the server to the new task length ;)

My antique Powermac G4 has taken 14 hours to get 20% through a WU; at this rate, it will never finish the queued WU's that used to take only 20 minutes each.

My speedy dual-core PC, on the other hand, whips through each in only 5 hours.

Looks like I'll have to switch my Mac to another BOINC project.

I wouldn't say it's necessary to drop MW from the Mac. Once BOINC adjusts itself to the new run times, it will likely only download one or two tasks at a time. This process will be complete much quicker if the project admins change the estimated run time on the WU's, but BOINC is capable of adjusting for itself even if they don't. When you get WU's that are nearly past deadline, just abort them and the computer should download 1 or 2 tasks and you'll be good.

Adding to what Thunder said.....Nate has already said that Travis will increase the deadlines soon,so these short deadlines won't last long ;)

Old ones were 2:30, new ones are as well 2:30. Only the for the old ones it was minutes, for the new ones it's hours. So the same her as with niterobin.

What's the nearly same as well is the ridiculous amount of credits that gets tossed after completed ones, on the first one here even 10% more. One third to one quarter should be enough.

Saenger ....Are you the credit Police? What is your problem dude...1st Cosmo now here! Credits here were voted on...every vote counted to the credit we receive(including yours)....I thought credit discussion was done here....always at least one guy that likes to stir it up.Are you employed by DA?Apparently you perfer gestapoism to democracy...Please just go crunch projects with no credit and leave the rest of us in peace.....Grrrrrrrr

Thank you for the information it is greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure that I'll be able to get through all of the WUs that were downloaded resently since the size has changed but no change to the amount of time to complete stayed the same. I received about 15 WUs and I don't know if the given deadline will be enough time to get through all of them. When they were downloaded the estimated time for my computer was 6 mins 47 secs. I'm currently at 1 hour 41 mins and the estimated time to completion is at 1 hour 21 mins and still is counting upward.

Again thank you for your help,

Warren Rogers

Please remember that the new estimated times are still wrong until you complete 1.....like the short tasks it runs slow to 50% then speeds up dramatically.

I am at least very happy my hosts are no longer jammed by MW and the length makes no difference to me as long as the pay rate is the same as someone else said.....

Now to the immediate problem of short deadlines and d/l too much work....remember everyone when you think of dumping some....they have to be resent by the server ....then crunched......which gives you even more time to report before your resend does .....and yours gets credit if reported 1st.......so those teetering on the edge of deadlines should get you credit anyways :) Don't be too quick to abort!

I am sadly going to have to put all my Boinc clients to no new work for this project. I have supported and contributed from the beginning but the server is so slow on the u/l-d/l that my ISP thinks I am being attacked by a virus because of the overload of requests through my routers and makes surfing and the work I do over the net impossible :(

I hope this situation gets rectified soon so I can continue to contribute in the near future.

I don't think it is 'funny' at all!!! hehe

Its a race to see which website/server is slower or who gives a failed to connect to server response the most, Cosmo or Milkyway.....the d/l's here been slow but no phantom or stuck...guess I am just lucky <G>
